It seems to be common belief that Derpy's cutiemark are bubbles, but they seem more like rocks or possibly bubble wrap to me.

They appear to be bubbles to me.

As Derpy was only meant to be a background character, the cutie mark doesn't really represent her at all.

Especially as she's a mail carrier.

She's a background character, the animators possibly just slapped any colors and any random cutie mark together :/

 

No episode ever mentioned about her job, other than dropping grand piano overhead and destroying the town hall

Actually, Ponibooru once had an image featured that explained her cutie mark. It was one of the FIRST comics ever to be featured. Here is a summary though:

Just a personal opinion but i think it shows her outlook of life. When you look through bubbles you get a distorted view. Everypony you see through bubbles look different, but they are still the same pony regardless of how they look, so why treat them different? Why not be happy and help everybody?
