I think her cutiemark is like cheerilee's in that it doesn't just describe a physical depict her talent, but describes her identity/personality.

when you think of bubbles, you probably think of lightness, airy, round, cute and round. derpy is a bubbly, adorable, optimistic little pony. i think bubbles describe her perfectly.

if her cutiemark was bubblewrap, the bubbles would all be equal in size and probably lined up.

when i think or round pebbles or stones, i think of hard, well groundedness, and probably kinda boring. pebbles or rocks don't seem to fit her personality the way bubbles do, but i dunno. derpy is derpy and that's all that matters to me.

I like Derpy. She's well meaning and a bit of a klutz and that is basically what makes her so cute. I mean we all have our moments where we try and do something and accidentally stumble for no particular reason, right?

I mean, it could just be that she loves blowing bubbles? But if we decide to go a little more technical, it could be that (like many have mentioned) since she's a mail mare, it could relate to packages having to be bubble wrapped due to her being a little on the clumsy side.

Every other pony has a Cutie Mark w either 1 main figure or 3 main figures.  Hazamabrony wrote a fanfic Unwell where Twilight has ACMS (Abstract Cutie Mark Syndrome = Pony Asperger's).  IMO, Derpy has a less severe case of this.  (Hey, she apparently manages without drugs or treatment)

I'm going along the lines of what others have said and it would be something more to represent her personality than a talent and/or job. (and we must all remember) that Derpy was only ever picked up due to an animation error so her cutie mark may well just be a stock one, that was on her when she was first made and it's stuck now due to our love for Derpy so...

Why is Derpy's cutie mark bubbles you ask?  The answer might be darker than you thought.

Seeing that actual bubbles fly randomly and freely with glee, it signifies the carefree and simple fun of their appearance. Back to Derpy and how it can relate to her, I believe that she symbolizes the though of fun, freedom and joy that she portrayed by her brief appearances during times when it's random. Including that, she's maybe not the most precise flyer too in that regard to how real bubbles lack general direction and fly however they like.

Well Derpy is also known as Ditzy by some, and someone who is Ditzy can be referred to as a bubble head, so I would say her cutie mark is tied to her ditzy personality.

 

Although she probably loves bubbles to, and may be a world class bubble blower for all i know.
