Why hate for Snips and Snails?

I honestly don't get why people hate Snips and Snails..

 

I understand if it's because all they have done is help bad ponies but that's about it. Snips is ok, but Snails, to me, is really adorable and has a cool character design!

 

I feel that if there explored more into backstory and shown in an episode explaining them instead of them helping a bad pony, they could be loved more.

 

What do you guys think?

Alright I am going to say it, I hate Snips and Snails because Derpy gets censored for supposedly being an offensive stereotype when Snips and Snails are a million times more stereotypical and these same hypocrites who rose hell over Derpy aren't saying anything about Snips and Snails or other characters just like them in countless other shows. I hate how these people claim to speak for the disabled when they don't even bother to listen to the countless ones that actually like Derpy.

If you go look at all the hate topics towards any of the ponies, all it does is prove my point that pony-bashing causes is to move backwards as a whole. Nothing is accomplished, except for people getting hurt.

 

Pony-hate in general is wrong, whether it be for one of the mane 6 or characters like Snips & Snails.

 

I challenge anyone reading this to go find a topic attacking a pony from the show and tell me what good came out of that topic.

I don't mind Snips and Snails, but I think people hate them for the same reason they hate Diamond Tierra. They're so generic and they are only there as plot devices. They have no real characteristics of their own, they're just lackeys. There are also some people who think they are a negative representation of young boys. "Snips and snails" is an expression that harkens back to an old nursery rhyme about what children are made of. It's a rhyme that reinforces sexist stereotypes about both boys and girls, so some people think that naming them after that rhyme supports sexist stereotypes. I guess the names kind of bother me as well, but I wouldn't mind the names if the characters would grow a little bit.

People dislike them for the same reason people disliked Flash Sentry.

 

There are two sides of the most basic male character spectrum. The stupid, purely for comedic effect, sheep that are usually rather annoying, and the absolutely perfect in every way jock.

 

Sadly for S&S, they are landed a bit too close to the former side. Flash Sentry was on the other.

 

I'm sure that if, for once, they had an episode where they weren't blindly following someone, people would like them a little more. But that will probably not happen, because that is why S&S characters' were made! To be those guys who always get on the wrong side.

 

Don't get me wrong, though. I wish we would get some actual character development from them.

 

Oh, and if I could state one more reason why people probably don't like them, have you heard their voices lately? I'm sorry, but *cringe*. Their voices irk me more than Trixie's... And Trixie has character.

 

(Please don't take this the wrong way. If you love Snips and Snails, go right ahead! Those guys need some more fans! I'm just sorry I can't be one, not until they get better in my eyes.)

Well, i'm not really for hating or bashing anypony.

 

However they just as far as most of the characters for me personally kinda come off as being a bit more boring, to boring for me to be really a big fan of them.

 

I suppose some just don't like their mindlessness, or other reasons.

 

Nothing wrong with liking them, but they don't really fall into many top lists of favorites for most due to being a bit bland overall.

 

Then again, in reality background ponies never really get any cannon personality or depth alot of times, and some have huge fanbases ;p. So idk ;p.

They are highly unlikeable characters. Elements of their being/personality that cause this are as you said their multiple alliances with antagonists, their voices that generally are considered annoying, their not-even-comedic lack of intelligence, and all of their poor choices in frankly all circumstances. I cannot think of a culture that reveres let alone likes any of their qualities. It may be argued that there should be more character development for them. To this I say that we have had plenty or at least enough of character development for them that many bronies have made the judgement that they don't like them. By the way, just because someone does not like something, does not mean they automatically hate it. One may dislike tuna, and hate genocide. There is an element of magnitude or scale there.

My biggest problem with Snips and Snails is the purpose the were created for.

They appear in "Boast Busters" for one reason - to show that only idiots can be Trixie's fans.

And tha was CHEAP.

 

I'm not a Trixie's fan myself, I just think such tricks are distasteful in general.

If they were just a couple of background ponies I would probably wonder about them and want some backstory, since they don't fit the usual cookie cutter colt body shape. I think Snips in particular looks very cute. But since we have already seen them as secondary characters and they haven't been very interesting in that role, I feel there my be no hope for them. Even if they developed a bit now I would still remember them as just Trixie's generic underlings.

First and foremost: Snips' voice. Most. Annoying. Sound. Snails' too, but not nearly as much; I can at least tolerate his.

Second, their incredibly ugly color schemes. Their actual designs (the shape of their faces, bodies, ears, etc) are fine, but their COLORS - UGH.

Third, their insufferable stupidity. I can forgive some things - I mean, they are just foals, after all, and boys on top of that - but it's just taken way too far in their case. There's nothing at all to counterbalance it. They're not cute, endearing, or funny. They're nothing but annoying, and when I saw them in the new opening, I literally groaned out loud (though Snails' smile was kinda cute ...).

But unlike your typical brony haters which we can safely laugh at and move on, they actually had an effect on the show which I why I can't just ignore them. And this issue goes far far beyond just this show, it is about how the disabled are viewed and treated in society. Some of the complainers may have been trolls trying to get our goat but quite a few of these people are actually stupid enough to believe their BS. There really are people who actually believe that the disabled should be seen and not heard and claim to know what is best for them while completely disregarding their actual opinions and wishes. Trust me, I have interacted with these scum countless times in my life. As someone who has grown up with Autism I know exactly what it is like to be singled out, I have been called names like stupid and retarded a million times before even though I am not simply because I didn't act "normal".

 

And I don't appreciate it when people hypocritically proclaim to know what is best for me without even bothering to listen to have I have to say. Derpy represented an opportunity, an opportunity to show that even though she was not confirmed one way or another to be disabled that you can't judge a book by its cover and that is is okay to be different, that there really is no such thing as "normal". I have gone from a kid who couldn't talk until I was 5 and threw temper tantrums every single day to a successful adult who while he still has challenges has advanced so far that most people can't even tell he ever had Autism. There were times when the universal answer to any child who wasn't normal was to put them in an institution to rot, and that is exactly what the doctor who diagnosed me recommended. We have gone way too far to go back to that again, I will not let us go back to that again.
