There was a man and a monk sitting by a pond.

 

Both the man and the monk saw a scorpion hanging by the edge of a leaf. Surely the scorpion was about to drown.

 

The man watched in amusement as the monk reached out for the scorpion. Was he going to save it? He was certain that the scorpion would just sting the monk for his efforts.

 

Sure enough, as the monk grabbed the scorpion and placed it on dry land, it stung him multiple times. The monk flinched a few times, but completed his task and let the scorpion be on its way.

 

The man looked over to the monk, confused, and asked, "Why did you do that? Didn't you know it was going to sting you?"

 

The monk answered, "It is in the scorpion's nature to sting."

 

The man asked, "If you knew its nature was to sting, why bother at all?"

 

To which the monk replied, "Because it is my nature to be kind."
