Spyro the dragon series

So, I recently have gotten back into the Spyro the dragon series. Im talking about the older ones. back on the Playstation 1. Tis a very fun and amazing game, with a great story, some humor, some challenges. It is basically the perfect game.

 

My question is, is what was the most FRUSTRATING and challenging challenge you had to do in the first 3 Spyro games???

 

For me, I would have to say...those "Flight" levels in the first Spyro game. Yes, the first and ever Spyro game was, however, not challenging at all, BESIDES THOSE DARN FLIGHT CHALLENGES!!!!

I despised them when I was younger, but I played through the 1st game 100% recently and I adored the flying levels :3

I'd have to say getting all the gems throughout the game was the most frustrating thing. Tree Tops was one of the worst, as was that...town square, or something similar.

OMGSH, I hated tree tops!! I hated chasing them thieves on it and you kept having to do that supercharge and not fall off every 5 seconds.

 

However, as for the flying ones, the first 3 arent so bad, but the last 2 I have always had trouble with xD

Oh man Spyro, this series takes me back since it was the first game series I ever played (Got spyro 1 and a PS1 at the age of 3).

 

Anyways, enough blaber about how nostalgic this series is to me, i guess the biggest challenge for me for the first one has to be Misty Bog as a whole (Gosh darn Attack Frogs!!!!). For the second game i'd say for the second game it was the stealth mission in  Cloud Temples (I've never really been good at stealth unless its influenced by some sort of skill modifier). Finally for the third game i'd have to say the Agent Nine FPS missions (Again, didn't have any FPS's i played back then)

The first three Spyro The Dragon games are stellar. The rest? Not so much. Sony and Insomniac should have kept the rights to the Spyro series and just not made anymore. Problem solved.

 

Anyways, some of the big challenges in the trilogy? The one that took me the longest to figure out was: how to rescue the dragons Jed and Copano in Spyro 1. Both of them require you to be a master supercharger and have memorized the path of the level's ramps. The whole Tree Tops level was difficult to figure out.

 

In Spyro 2, the orb in Breeze Harbor where you have to collect 50 gears on the track. I failed quite a few times before achieving that one. ALSO: the "defeat Ripto without getting wounded" Skill Point.

 

In Spyro 3, the "You're Doomed" and "You're Still Doomed" first person shooter with Agent 9. I remember them taking a really long time and dying several times too.

 

Ripto's Rage is my favorite game in the series.

Oh man, them frogs were soooo annoying. Not to brag, but im REALLY good at the game after playing it for years and I now know good ways to avoid things and rarely die, unless I have a stupid attack and fall off a ledge, but those frogs KILLED me several times because sometimes they'd be right behind you and you don't know. Hahaha xD man, that's such a good game.

Those flight levels from the first Spyro game. You have to fly around do a certain number of things. Those were the most frustrating levels out of the trilogy in my opinion. With Ripto's Rage and Year of the Dragon, I had some difficulty, but was able to complete all the levels with a difficulty ranging from easy to medium. With the first Spyro game, those flight levels were always hard as rocks. Maybe it was because I was young then. That has to be it.

You are talking to one of the biggest fans of spyro the dragon here! Next to crash bandicoot of course.

 

This game is a classic and it's always a fun time to play with whenever I can.

 

It does have some tricky stages and gem collecting, but to me, it's pretty easy, although tree tops gave me some problems at first.

 

Also, the soundtrack is very fitting and well done, with my favorite being the boss battle song of Jacques.

I liked Ripto's Rage better than Spyro 1 because for some reason I like the talisman collecting and the world looked so much more cooler and imaginative. They had more personality to them than the worlds in Spyro 1. 

 

Fracture Hills is the best. Best part is when the satyrs play the flute and if there's any sheep nearby they dance :3

Used to play that series a lot as a kid. In terms of the hardest challenges, probably that saucer minigame in the tomb level (can't remember the name). 

 

I actually began replaying all the games (yes, all of them) ages ago, but that quickly stopped when Bioshock Infinite came out. Overall, I agree that the original games were better, but I think there are some non-Insomniac titles worth mentioning. Season of Flame is decent if you want a decent Spyro game on a handheld (stay FAR away from Season of Ice though). Adventure/Attack of the Rynochs is also okay provided that you don't mind back tracking.

 

As for A Hero's Tail, I absolutely despised that game as a kid - in fact, it was what made me stop playing these games until very recently. I didn't like the overly-cutesy colour palette (*cough* pink trees *cough*), I didn't like the control changes and I didn't like the redesigns for most of the characters. However, playing it as an adult, I've actually grown to really like it for a number of reasons:

-I honestly prefer the semi-open world structure to the hub/portal structure of the Insomniac games

-Levels are somewhat harder to actually traverse, putting slightly less emphasis on minigames

-There's some decent self-referential humour in there which I really didn't get as a kid (like The Professor not being able to come up with a new set of random trinkets for Spyro to collect). Also, there's a dragon elder who may or may not be a pole dancer.

On the flipside, they made Spyro himself a complete knob.

 

As for the Legend series, I've been trying to play them. I don't actually have anything hugely against them on principle, it's just that I keep getting distracted by more recent releases.

 

As for Skylanders, I'm kind of torn but mostly against it. On one hand, I like the fact that it was something genuinely new when it came out, but I also dislike the fact that it's a giant kiddie money sink. Also, by using Spyro as a launching pad for this, they've pretty much put the brand on ice since SLs isn't really doing much with it, but because it's part of SLs, it can't really be used for a new game yet.

I grew up with the original Spyro games. I pretty much consider them the main series of my childhood. Can you believe I've never actually finished the first one? I really need to start playing again.

There are so many hilarious enemies in these games.

In my opinion nothing will ever beat these games of old. I loved that game as a kid and whenever I replay a game like this now it is like going back in time almost. I'd have to agree those flying stages were a huge pain.

I freakin love the first game. I had it on ps1 when I was a kid and I've finished the game thrice I think. The most recent time was last summer:

 

Twilight harbor was a very annoying level when I was a kid. I just couldn't get past those gnorcs with the assault rifles without taking a hit. Nowadays I'm a bit better at it though.

As for the other two games, I've never played the second game and I only played a demo version of the third game.

Yasss!!! Spyro! Honestly I was only familiar with the first game and Enter the Dragonfly (I was only really a fan of the first game).

 

Since I only played the 1st and 4th game (close enough to 3), my difficulties:

 

-The most irritating part about the game was the supercharge level in Tree Tops; I couldn't figure out how to keep going without losing the red and green thiefs. I eventually became a "master of the supercharge"

-I didn't always find a means of traveling to high up places (like in Wizard's Peak, there are those towers that you can only access with supercharge), so this also hindered my status.

-Another irritating thing was when you have 199/200 treasure, but you just can't find that last red jewel ANYWHERE!!! RAWRR !!! So you have to search the entire map.

 

Eventually I managed to beat the game 120% several times.

 

As for Enter the Dragonfly...

-There were more puzzling situations (like in that Dinosaur level, I couldn't figure out how to release the dragonfly from that glass stone, though I eventually managed to get all dragonflies freed).

-Not sure what else. The maps were much larger so I had difficulties finding all of the treasure sometimes.

I only ever played "A heroes tail" to be honest, and even that i hardly got that far. As i was young, and when i was young i was absolutely terrible at video games(I still am, but better relatively speaking atleast.)

 

So yeah, i don't really have much experience with the games otherwise, they were fun as far as what i played, but i only played the one game, which as far as i'm concerned isn't the old ones y'all are referring to.

Such a tragic fate that this character is being completely bastardized by Activision, I really hate that company.

 

I loved the first two, never really played the 3rd playstation 1 game or any after that, except for Season of Flame for GBA, which was really good too. I liked Ripto's Rage more but both bring back such great memories. I still play them on PS3.

Year Of The Dragon is superb. Definitely play it when you next get the chance. It has more in common with Ripto's Rage than with Spyro 1. I like Ripto's Rage more but it's just personal taste. The main differences between Ripto's Rage and YOTD:

 

-YOTD lets you play as non-Spyro characters including Hunter in the Speedway levels and Sparx in top-down 2D mazes

-YOTD has four overworlds instead of three
-YOTD has alot of dialogue and character interactions that you can only experience once (if you want to experience it again, you have to start a new game). I think this is the main reason I like it less than Ripto's Rage.

-YOTD has less use of powerups, even though they still play a role.

-YOTD's story is noticably darker and more dramatic

 

Anyways, regarding that speedrun: Damn! I must take some time out to watch this.
