Underrated FanFIcs

Hey there MLP Forums, TwilightDreamer here.

 

 

Now, each time while I was browsing through the web and through sites like this one, I usually come across MLP fanfics that are much better than the authors are given credit for. There are a ton of fanfics out there in the MLP universe that are better than what most people think. This is something that has been biting me at the back of my mind but I never really had the chance or never even got around to talking about this until now.

 

If you want to know what I'm saying, then take my personal favorite fanfic of the show by AlexLoneWolf called My Little Pony: A New Hero on FIMfiction and FanFiction. The story focused around the adventures of Alex, a lonely earth pony who's had a hard bout in life and who, like Twilight, doesn't know the very first thing about friendship until he met the Mane 6 near the end of Friendship is is Magic Part 2

 

It's a more darker and much more interesting twist on the show and the reason I love it so much is that readers who read A New Hero like myself get to see the show from the eyes of another being or pony in the 1st person point of view instead of seeing things from the 3rd person point of view and Alex's back story is weaved throughout the fanfic from (spoilers) Alex's harsh life before he met the girls to Princess Cadence who was once his teacher in Fillydelphia instead being created out of the blue like in the show, to Princess Luna being his actual biological mother and a pony she met in her past being his true biological father at the end of Part 3 (season 3) of the story. There are plot twists in the story that make it in ways a lot better than the original show at times and what I loved about it is how different the show could be if there was another pony with the Mane 6 like (again, spoilers and only on FanFiction) in Bats, we see another side of Fluttershy with Flutterbat, her alter-ego still holding Alex in high-esteem and having her trust Alex because he was so supportive of her throughout the episode until her transformation.

 

What I don't understand is that some people just hated fanfics like those becuase they don't have any purpose while they were written or if they were just ripoffs of the show. Some of these fanfics are better than other initially thought if they continue to read it and look deeper into the story at heart.

 

What do you think about underrated MLP fanfics like A New Hero? Should we give them a chance or should they be put off on the wayside and just ignore them and always see them as ripoffs and nothing more than weak writing pieces? In my mind, let's not go that far to say that the underrated fics are a waste of time and at least give them a read.

My New Life In Equestria by MaxBeezy on FIMFiction; very popular read on there, actually, but doesn't seem to get much mention elsewhere.

 

Biggest pro: Has a near-perfect balance of comedy and drama.

 

Biggest con: Tries too hard to be as risque as possible within the Teen rating (ESPECIALLY the chapter where Matt meets Chrysalis ("THE NEXT THOUSAND OR SO WORDS HAVE BEEN DELETED FOR THE SAKE OF ALL THAT IS DECENT IN THE WORLD OF EQUESTRIA," indeed.)).
