Where is that "boldness" Meghan spoke of?

I seem to recall Meghan MacCarthy calling season 4 "bold", but I'm not seeing that.  The episodes try new things, but keep the new stuff in the "safe zone" where the magic reset button can make everything normal again.  While I do feel season 4 is good so far, I wouldn't say it's taking many chances, which is what Meghan was implying with that statement.

What do you guys think?

Simple Ways was taking a huge risk; pitting friend against friend over a douchey stallion in a love triangle sort of thing, having them play the role of each other, and leaving it all up to a new writer to pull it off. That alone is enough risk to make me anticipate Mare Do Well levels of hate.

Also, gave up the elements of harmony, brought Discord back, made FS a bat temporarily after all 5 of her friends were against her, etc.

I think it's pretty bold.

And furthermore, we're still only halfway through the ride   Who knows what else is in store? :D

Whoa settle down there partner. Megan is as good as her word. I'm sure when she said that she was speaking (mostly) about he season premiere / finale and the season 4 story arc as a hole and not so much the individual episode.

How could you make this assumption for the whole season when we're only halfway through it?

Did you see AJ's plot? And how she swung it. I'm willing to bet money all the boldness went into that plot.

I was referring to her arse mate.

All that tree bucking is paying off in more ways than one! ;)

And yes, let's wait until the season's over before passing final judgment.

And as has been said, Mehgan may've been thinking of a different "bold" than some of us were thinking.

How do you think WE feel?!

The problem with Simple Ways is that the reset button was hit so that the conflict could be swept under the rug.  What would have been truly bold would be if Trederhoof became a permanent love interest.

Discord was technically brought back in season 3.  It was kind of necessary to use him in season 4.

Flutterbat is a perfect example of what my issues are.  The whole thing was temporary.  As far as we know, Fluttershy won't have to deal with that ever again.

That is a good point.  The reason I'm worried is that we're at the half-way point and I can only count two truly bold things in the season: getting rid of the EoH and having Pinkie and AJ be related.  Flutterbat might become something bold, but no rules have been given regarding the transformation.  We have no way of knowing how and why she'd be able to transform again.  There was that interesting line in Three's a Company, wherein it was made clear that they gave her apples and only apples to eat on the way there.  But I could be reading to much into that because of wishful thinking.

Eh. Then again, the problem being here is that the show would be too drastically affected to be any good. Flutterbat was fun, but would the majority of viewers want that to be a permanent thing? And I sure as HELL know I want Trenderhoof gone for good.

While it's good to be bold and make changes, making permanent changes that are too drastic will only make the show less interesting, and honestly, kind of dumb.

Trenderhoof is now a permanent love interest who totally just came out of nowhere one episode? Flutterbat suddenly became a bat permanently?

That doesn't sound like a good thing.

Changes are good, changes are great, but too many show-altering changes are death to a story.

I don't know if this is the right topic to bring this up, but this tease in particular has been bugging me for a while

If Rainbow Falls is some sort of indication of this, then that doesn't give me much hope

People need to learn some patience/subtlety.

We haven't finished the season, not by a long shot.

We have an ongoing plot (keys) and in the meantime what the show does best: Slice of Life.

These can tackle somewhat serious issues (Scootaloo can't fly), or just the team having fun (Power Ponies/Discord shenanigans.

There is a difference between bold and forced. A love interest has to be build up over time to be effective, otherwise you just end up with some contrived mess. Apart from that, would you want Trenderhoof in the show?

But they...

But he...

Wow, you actually got me on that one.  I suppose the real issue is how unclear Trenderhoof's character is.

I thought Rainbow Falls was actually a fairly decent episode. However, what they've done with Rainbow Dash so far this season is no indication of any kind of improvement. She's still the same character I've purely hated for three and half seasons for the same annoying reasons.

Yikes.

Anyway, I think she was referring to the more continuity-based storytelling, which is all leading up to what she described as "the most epic thing we've ever done".

But on an episode to episode basis, yeah, nothing quite as bold as transforming your main character into a demigod, or featuring an episode that raised the possibility that one of the characters may have been mistaken for a clone and destroyed.

I'm probably one of the few people who didn't hate RF(though I did find it really disappointing), but it certainly doesn't have a lot going for it.

I do have some hope for the rest of the season, but as a RD fan, I can't help but feel disappointed so far, especially after how great season 3 was for her imo

Well, we aren't exactly in the final stretch of S4, so I only judge the hype a season has been building up until I see everything we got.

I mean look at the freaking Canterlot Wedding.
