gaming A new SimCity! (2013)

http://www.reddit.co...n_simcity_amaa/ Check this out, they are doing a reddit Q and A

Known about it for some time.

Someone created a log of what was asked and answered.

My largest city hit 2,000,000 without cheats, but traffic was crappy.

And yeah. Thanks to NAM addon, I was able to decrease traffic woes. I mean, what type of city has severe congestion at 1000 cars on the road?

And with that, do you think a dedicated SC4 gaming thread should be made? This is just for the so-called SC5.

I was still on page 1 when I typed that, so my apologies. I meant to say that in the new Simcity, they should better improve traffic mechanics because they were unrealistic when I played Simcity 4.

Well, I feel like Tarkus when I'm doing these quote-y things, but,...

Copied verbatim from the Reddit AMA log:

So one example of how that’s different would be that the vehicles you saw in SC4 were just visual representations of ‘traffic density’ at that location, they weren’t real, if you watched them long enough they’d fade out as they turned corners. By contrast, with our new simulator, each and every vehicle and person is a real simulation entity heading to some real destination.

where is this log?

Simtropolis. http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/topic/48289-organized-log-of-maxiss-reddit-amaa/

Let's just say I get all of my city simulation news directly from there. ;)

Dude, I never thought anypony else other than probably myself would drag over a chunk of the Simcity gawkfest from Simtropolis and literally just plop it over here.

Despite my own personal scepticism (and following Tarkus's own), I too am feeling quite excited about this, and so far I'm feeling quite impressed.

Of course I've already known about the gawk for some time, and it's of an even greater significance to me considering one big thing: I am a member of the Network Addon Mod Team, the same exact team that brought to you the NAM, RHW, NWM, and so much stuff. Why else would I go around leaving scars and collecting my jar of hearts? with a hard hat with a weird cloverleaf-y symbol on it?

My biggest concern was how would the NAM Team, and for that matter, all of the existing SC4 modding teams, react to this? Is it the beginning of the end, or the beginning of a new beginning?

I, for one, will forever hold onto SC4 for the sake of nostalgia, and I'm sure there will be plenty of nostalgia players. And personally, I even wanted to try out the past three Simcitys. Closest I ever got was SC1 and a demo version of SC3K.

But truly I would go ahead with SC5. That and Minecraft and the fact that I already overload my laptop should be plenty of an incentive for me to get a new computer, and the timing for everything is just about right.

You were a part of the NAM team?! Then you have my thanks, because I adored that mod for the extra sense it brought to my cities. I may never have been a very good player, but that mod was a lifesaver at times...I may have to try my hand at raising a city again soon now.

Incidentally, though, this video didn't quite excite me as much as it has for others...primarily because of that little message at the end that said "images not representative of actual gameplay." That has me thinking it might not be all that great.

Still, considering this video is the only knowledge I have of this project thus far, I probably shouldn't judge. If a member of the NAM team is hesitantly optimistic, that's good enough for me.

I'm not sure what I'm happier to see - a new Maxis-developed SimCity, or the mere fact that Maxis are back in action! So many hours of my life have gone into The Sims; and while I never was a serious SimCity player, I thoroughly enjoyed what I did play of SimCity 4 and have always loved city-building games in general (Pharaoh is still my all-time favourite one).

Especially shocked to see Maxis back. Now they need to reclaim The Sims series as well.

To be honest, I think EA did a surprisingly faithful job with The Sims 3. Haven't followed any of its expansion packs, so I don't know where they've taken it since (though I get, like, weekly emails asking me to buy new furniture for the game online). But the actual game is very solid and feels like something Maxis would have made, IMO.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Origin-exclusive?

EA, what the hell? The way to sell more copies of your game is not to force every purchase of the game to be through your own website.

They want to push their shitty program as far as possible.

Just release it to retail, like every huge AAA game should be. SC5 is exactly the kind of game I want to have a physical copy of to display on my shelf - not to mention that downloading a 10 GB game is agonizing at my connection's speed.

This is without even taking into account how crappy a platform Origin supposedly is. I've never used it, so I can't form an opinion of it, but I've generally heard that it sucks for all kinds of reasons.

Unfortunately, I fear the age of physical copies has already passed...not entirely, no, but it's definitely heading out the door, at least for PC games.

I remember when you used to get jewel cases, hundred page manuals with lovingly crafted art shining on nearly every page, even the occasional extra neat useful thing like a map or a poster or something else you could physically hold. Nowadays to get that sort of stuff you have to spend forty, fifty, sixty dollars extra, and you get maybe a tenth of the content you used to get just for buying the game.

I miss getting those things.

Well, it might be extremely surprising to know one peculiar fact: Maxis has been observing two major SC4 fansites for a long time. They're watching us... :P

It's well established that they've been reading these forums (and SC4D's forums) for a long time.

I always thought they were dead; In fact, throughout my SC4 involvement, I never thought much about Maxis.

As far as I know so far, the main thing that's been holding back a true successor of SC4 was computer hardware. Can't do much 3D on a dinky old 2003 Windows XP computer, can ya? The closest you can get is 2.5D orthographic projection, and that's how it's always been done.

Imagine all the processing power it must take to make the would-be automata actually meaningful, and then some.
