An Overlooked Observation: Filli Vanilli

I know I am in the minority of people who actually think Pinkie was fine in this episode, but this topic is not about that. This topic is about how Fluttershy and Pinkie interact in this episode regardless of whether OoC behavior is present.

I realize many people thought of Pinkie as making Fluttershy cry, and she did, but what if I told you it was actually through more of an indirect manner? See when Pinkie says "...it was probably like your own personal worst nightmare!" we as an audience say: "WTF!? Pinkie shut up!" (I know, I did it too), but then I noticed something. When Pinkie says "You're great sounding, dude." Fluttershy responds "Thank you all, I'm glad you enjoyed it..." Fluttershy wasn't upset with Pinkie and actual understood what she meant. Unfortunately, Pinkie in her excitement freaked Fluttershy out and triggered her fit of crying. The problem is with both parties, Pinkie wasn't as considerate as she should've been, but Flutters let a statement get to her that she personally knew shouldn't have.

I have actually done the same as Pinkie did in this episode, and I still kind of regret it. My friend that I accidentally caused grief for wasn't angry with me at all though, he knew I meant no harm in my statement and told me there was no need to apologize. I think that this is the type of situation MLP was trying to deliver here. Admittedly though, one or two more lines of dialogue from Pinkie or Flutters hammering the point home would make this a non-issue.

Do you all at least understand my point of view? Do you think that both parties are in the wrong or just Pinkie? Do I just have too much free time on my hands, because I have a lackluster social life? Am I above self deprication? Feel free to discuss any or all of these questions below!

That is how i saw it all along it's almost like everyone thinks Pinkie was purposely a bitch

I think many do, but I doubt everyone does.

I'm okay with Pinkie Pie when it came to complimenting Fluttershy on her singing, but that's story is for another time. Maybe if they had more interactions with Pinkie and Fluttershy more often, then I'll see which side was in the wrong or right.

I understand your point of view though, because both parties have some arguments that a lot of people could defend.

Yea, Pinkie and Fluttershy don't interact much for two characters done by the same VA huh?

You know what I mean, I know they are done by the same voice actor but have them interact some more and in a subtle way this time.

I wasn't being snide, I meant it. Look at RD and AJ they have A LOT of interaction under their belt, and I think Pinkie and Fluttershy compliment each other nicely.

Yeah. With two characters that have something which compliments each other, I say make it happen writers!

Well I don't think Pinkie was a bitch too. Listen, somepony should do that, somepony should make Fluttershy cry, otherwise the ending would suck. And since Pinkie doesn't think before speaking, she was the best pony for that role.

The problem is that Pinkie wasn't looking for the silver lining in this negativity.  She was treating something bad like it was great.  That just...makes no sense.  She was talking about all the negative things Fluttershy was thinking, even the stuff that wasn't true.  And this was all done to get some contrived way for Fluttershy to cry and run off, that was completely unnecessary!

Fluttershy can blow things out of proportion when she's nervous or scared.  Hurricane Fluttershy is a prime example.  It was clear to us that Flitter and Cloudchaser were not laughing at her, but she misinterpreted that because of her past.  It was clear to us that everypony wasn't staring at her, but she believed they were because she was facing a fear of hers.  They didn't need Pinkie to put her hoof in her mouth.  And that is the true crime.

I just think went too far.

I don't mind if Pinkie is a little inconsiderate. It's a part of her development.

But we've seen Pinkie pull really commendable feats of consideration. Like not allowing Dashie to prank Fluttershy. Reigning in her enthusiasm about throwing Cranky and Matilda a huge reunion party because she knows they want some peace. Trying not to be too loud when Dashie just wanted to relax and sunbathe at the pond.

But her she was going on and on as Fluttershy was quaking and tearing up right in front of her.

Just too much for me.

Perhaps Pinkie Pie's actions are a reflection of what happened to her in Pinkie Pride. In that episode she had a very tough time because she concealed her feelings from her friends. Pinkie's overly direct observation of Fluttershy's situation could be Pinkie trying to be honest about what she thinks and feels.

"...and I don't think anyone was jealous because there wasn't an angry mob or anything!" In her own way that was Pinkie trying to tell Fluttershy she was great and everyone loved her. She wasn't treating anything bad as great, she just doesn't understand stage frighy. Pinkie is a party pony, who thrives on attention, but has trouble reading some social cues and often miscommunicates her actual point. 'Party of One' and 'Pinkie Pride' show her greatest fear is being alone presumably because she can't spread joy if there's no one to spread it to. Fluttershy by contrast prefers being alone, and Pinkie as stated can't read social cues ('Friendship is Magic', 'Ticket Master', 'Luna Eclipsed', 'A Friend In Deed', 'The Last Roundup','Games Ponies Play', 'Too Many Pinkie Pies', etc. show this) in fact she only truly showed sensitivity to Fluttershy in 'Griffon the Brush Off' otherwise she often exasperated events through her lack of it.

Also I stated in my original post that it probably was unnecessary to the plot, but it doesn't detract from the story either.

I just think went too far.

I don't see it as any different than her not taking Luna's feelings into account in 'Luna Eclipsed', but it's harder to watch with Fluttershy's reaction by comparison.

It could be a mix of that and her past developments. I like that interpretation.  :)

My main problem with Pinkie Pie's behavior was that she didn't apologized for making Fluttershy cry despite her friends calling her out for it, thus it made me concerned that she didn't thought she did anything wrong despite her friends telling her and putting her down for her rude behavior. It wasn't how hurtful she may have unintentionally had been towards Fluttershy, but how oblivious she was to her actions and not realizing what she was doing wrong.

But what about the lines:

Twilight: "You were great Fluttershy!"

Pinkie: "Didn't I say that!?

Rarity: "Hardly!"

Pinkie: "Oops. YOU WERE GREAT!!!"

Apologies aren't always necessary imo. Pinkie realized she made a mistake, and Fluttershy had no malice toward her either. What would an apology do besides indicate the previous statement?

Pinkie didn't stick around to see how her actions were affecting Luna. Every time she saw her, she screamed and bolted as fast as she could. She was playing a joke and though everyone was in on it.

But with Fluttershy, she was standing there, LOOKING at Fluttershy, continuing to yammer despite her friend visibly panicking and tearing up. And while Rarity bopped her one the nose AFTER her first tirade, why didn't anyone stop her earlier? If I was with a group of friends, and one of them was going way out of line like that and my other friend was about to start crying, I'd clamp my hand over their mouth and tell them to shut up.

You're telling me Pinkie seeing Luna screaming at everyone and cancelling Nightmare Night wouldn't qualify as the same thing? I mean maybe you're right, but I'm still not seeing it.

No problem, it probably should have been hammered in better though.

I just watched the scene again, and Pinkie wasn't there. She bolted again.

She probably saw the sky and the thunder, and maybe she heard some of what Luna said, but I'll bet anything she was at the edge of Ponyville by then, laughing and thinking the sudden spooky sky was awesome and scary, as she shoveled more candy in her mouth.

Hmmmm....I don't know then. I'd assumed that they had at least heard her enough to know what was going on though, and they know Nightmare Night was cancelled right after. Was this a possible oversight or did someone else tell them off-screen? I don't know, good catch though.

It's possible that when Pinkie and the kids that ran off with her came back, the kids found out that Nightmare Night was canceled from their parents and the other kids and adults that had been there. Pinkie probably just wandered off, not listening or paying attention to anything, and just spent time looking for more candy. The reason I assume that Pinkie didn't know Nightmare Night was cancelled, was because Pinkie didn't seem upset. Pinkie's like a big kid. If she learned she was never going to have another night full of costumes and free candy again, I think she'd be moping around just like the children were.

I don't really think Fluttershy was wrong to get freaked out.  You can't really help how you feel about certain topics.  It's not like she blamed her friends (not even Pinkie) for her desire to not sing on stage.  She just said that she didn't want to, and she was hoping that they'd understand.  I'm pretty sure she realized that Pinkie wasn't trying to scare her, because she knows that Pinkie Pie cares about her.

I think Pinkie was just getting a little too excited and didn't have time to censor her thoughts before she allowed them to become words.

Ok, maybe Fluttershy wasn't wrong (that was probably a bad choice of words), but she still let Pinkie's antics get to her when she knows she probably shouldn't have. This was meant more of a defense of Pinkie Pie. I apologize, I didn't want to implicate that Fluttershy was being a wimp or anything like that, it was just a natural exchange that had reprecussions. So I would say both sides are innocent for lack of a better word.
