Just a question that crossed my mind recently. For an unknown reasons, I suddenly thought about Google-ing about Silent Hill. So which one do you pony folks think is a lot scarier; Amnesia or Silent Hill and why?

Silent hill was awesome for its time.. but these days.. not so much :(

the low grade GFX, lacking sound quality, and overal atmosphere are lacking by current standards.

Amnesia though.. not sure where I stand on it. These games where your forced to be defenseless only have fear as a challenge, rather than an experience IMO.

Silent Hill seems to take off quicker while Amnesia seems to drag on before getting to actual horror.

So, yeah, Silent Hill probably gets my vote.

Never played a Silent Hill game but I've seen game-play and I'm pretty sure it was a horror / action game whereas amnesia focuses just in horror. I'd say Amnesia anyway.

I love videogames but I'm afraid I cannot state an opinion on this matter because horror games/movies just don't do anything for me.

For example; I tried Amnesia and this is what happend in my first 30 minutes.

Amnesia isn't even remotely scary and I find it's horror elements superfluous and even downright unnecessary. The game would have done so much better as a Myst-style puzzle game. Between the fact that the enemies were completely random and I spent 90% of that game never running into them and even when I did it's easy enough to just die and let them disappear (getting them out of the way) I didn't find the game to live up to it's "scariest game since sliced bread" thing.

Silent Hill isn't usually scary after the first playthrough either but at least it was still scary for that first playthrough which is important. Silent Hill without a doubt. Downpour had some downright scary moments and the combat was very good considering your weapons could break on you. When your trusty fireaxe breaks, your first reaction is always "oh shit". Then there's the ever-stressful chases through the otherworld.

I'm not really scared by either, but that's just me. I'd still have to go with Silent Hill, for two reasons. 1. The, as other people have called it, creepy music, atmosphere, creatures. And 2. My sister screams while playing it, and she's 18 now. She played through Amnesia without much of a problem. I also just love SH, so this is possibly biased, and I am sorry.

I should make note that between these two series Silent Hill definitely wins in both quality and scariness. However, I would never call either of these series among the scariest games out there. Fatal Frame has them both beat a thousand fold but it's not on the poll.

I really haven't played that many horror games but of the ones I have played Amnesia is definitely the least scary. Some horror games I wouldn't say are even trying to be scary, they just have a horror setting. Stuff like Alone in the Dark 4 (only one in the series I've played so far) or Eternal Darkness.

Then there's Condemned. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a horror game but that game is scary as crap when you can turn a corner and get your face smashed in by a thug with a 2x4 you didn't know was there. A totally different kind of horror.

I dunno anything about vidyagames, but I do know both of these games.

My dad was a gamer, and I remember watching him play that Silent Hill game...I was scared shitless, bit it was fun :D

I've also watched Pewdiepie (not the best YT gameplay man, but I still like him) play that Amnesia mod with Fluttershy...

Gotta say, man, Silent Hill seems a LOT scarier than Amnesia, but I could be mistaken, given I've also seen someone play through that one Amnesia mod :P

I haven't really played that much Silent Hill (Only Homecoming and Downpour, and didn't finish either), but I find Amnesia a bit more scary mainly because you are defenseless and all you can do is run or hide from the monsters (But if you're talking about Machine for Pigs then that is a different story)

In Machine for Pigs the monsters are just slow and aren't really there to scare you, I think it's more like reading a horror book (Because of the notes) and from what I've heard if you pay attention to the story notes, the game becomes more scary (Sadly I skipped through half of them)

I live Silent Hill, the Pyramid Head is one of the creepiest guys ever in a video game.

I have always heard of Amnesia, and it always seemed interesting. Is it like Silent Hill?

It's nothing like Silent Hill. You play in first person, can't defend yourself and the enemies are completely randomized to the point you may never run into them more than three or four times the entire game.

I don't know. Amnesia doesn't really do it for me anymore. I guess I like silent hill more because it's different. Shattered memories was the best in my opinion, cause you don't have any weapons. :3

Although Amnesia is a bucking good game the first first 3 and a half Silent hills beat it it by far. This was pretty much because of their great story telling and even though the combat controls were pretty messed up it was still a damn good game to play.  :)

Silent Hill is KING of Horror. Nothing beats it, only Resident Evil came close.

Amnesia is all about building up the atmosphere, to the point where you see things, mainly monsters and allusions.

Silent Hill, on the other hand, SCREWS your mind into billions of pieces. It's just mindblowing, everything from Amnesia, Silent Hill has it, but FAR scarier.

Amnesia is fucked up, but Silent Hill is the stuff from nightmares.
