Because their dad was named Tom, and they didn't want to insult his existence by naming a cat after him. He was a good soldier. Moe was the name of their uncle, who was just total shit, so they went with that. Moe (the cat)'s existence is somewhere in the middle of their extreme opposites in heroism.
