Woo! ^^

Hello all you (hopefully) Sonic fans out there!

If you're here, I assume you're ready to discuss the one, the only, the blue blur himself:

Wanna know why? Because he's awesome.

And you know it, why else would you be here? For the free muffins?!

Anyways, to open this up:

As we all (hopefully) know, Sonic is one of the world's most famous video game characters of all time.

He's the best one too, lol.

He's kicked Mario's plumber butt left and right more times than he can count.

Sonic's had more merch than Jimmy Carter has had peanuts.

He was a peanut farmer, it's a joke.

Sonic has even had his own comic book spin off, that's won world records for "Longest comic based on a Video Game".

And recently, the big Sonic convention "Summer of Sonic" has recently won a world record too.

There's just no stopping him!

With that little introduction out of the way, I'm going to ask a few questions to get things going so some discussion can begin.

If that's okay with you. ^^

I love nearly everything about Sonic, but I am not at all looking forward to Sonic Boom.

But I bet my opinion will change as soon as it comes out.

It looks really good!

To bad it's a Wii U exclusive.

Nice move, Nintendo. Making one of the best looking Sonic games in a while and it being only exclusive.

It's like a huge middle finger to the fandom, lol.

I don't really want to pour gas on the flames that is the hate of most for '06, but I think it's kind of silly people would flip over such a thing.

Honestly, yes it's weird, but it's not the first thing to have humans and animals kissing.

I know, that sounded weird, but there's plenty out there, I just can't think of one right now.

Didn't Roger Rabbit have something like that? I dunno.

Something that always confused me though, I always wondered why Amy didn't crack Elise's head like a walnut?

Explain this shit, SEGA.

Anyone else know what I mean here?

I mean, I wasn't crazy about the whole thing, but it wasn't really necessary.

However, the idea of Sonic being "reborn" as Super Sonic is literally the most badass thing in Sonic.

Sure, '06 was a bomb, but still, the story wasn't half bad as most claim it to be.

I actually enjoyed the story, somewhat.

Back to what I was saying though, I wasn't against the "kissing" scene, but then again I wasn't all for it.

More like a thin 50/50 if you will.

I won't run the list here, but I'll just say I just downloaded a GBA emulator and Sonic Advance a day ago, now I'm hopelessly addicted to it. I at one time had the original 1991 Sonic and Sonic 2 until my Genesis crapped out, Sonic Adventure until a mishap occurred regarding our Dreamcast that I won't talk about, Sonic Advance until I lost the cartridge, and Sonic Heroes until I gave it to a friend. Talk about bad luck (except the "giving it to a friend" part).

Being more of a movies/TV guy than a video gamer, I will say both Sonic SatAM and Sonic X (the Japansese version way more than the American dub) were good shows, "Cracking Knuckles"/"Clash!! Sonic vs Knuckles" was my favorite episode so far from Sonic X.

Man, I really want to play Sonic Heroes again, it's been quite a while.

But MERGH those Special Stages xD

The boost is all wrong!

Sonic Advance, I can't really consider "Modern" or "Classic", but of it's own thing.

Like the "Advance Saga" or something, you know?

Even though Ryan Drummond voiced Sonic in it (I think), I still can't really consider it a Modern or Classic game.

Anyways, as I said before, I think Sonic X is the best, but that's probably because I grew up with Sonic X and Jason Griffith voicing him.

"Cracking Knuckles" was a very good episode! It's always fun to watch the 2 fight.

You have pure strength vs speed and wit, it's just funny thinking about it. ^^"

Before I do any other posting in this topic, I shall answer the questions.

BEWARE: I am a major Sonic fanboy. Entering this topic and reading my posts will create pandemonium EVERY SINGLE TIME. I guarantee this.

ONWARD TO Q&A!

  Quote

Which is your favorite Sonic game?

I...really can't answer this. All of them rock. It'll be much easier to answer the next question than to answer this one. Sorry, they're all too awesome for me to pick favorites!

  Quote

What are your top 5 favorite Sonic games?

In no particular order, and extremely subject to change based on what I've played most recently:

Sonic Adventure

Sonic and the Black Knight

Sonic 2

Sonic Rush Adventure

Sonic Unleashed Wii

(Winners by proxy: Sonic Rush and Adventure 2)

Note: Sonic 06 would have ranked here if it had been finished. I like every idea they threw at me in that game but the extreme bugginess has prevented even myself from playing the game a second time for many years. I'm working up the oomph to do so. The glitches and loading times are aggravating as fuck and it's extremely hard to play past them, even for someone like me who deliberately ignores such things in video games usually.

  Quote

Who's your favorite Sonic character?

Depends kinda on the medium.

In the comics: Sally or Knuckles.

In the games: Knuckles

In the cartoons: Antoine

Sorry, Sonic fans, Sonic just doesn't place very high in most cases! He's best in the comics but is beaten by all the other amazing characters.

  Quote

Who's your top 5 favorite Sonic characters?

Sally

Knuckles

Antoine

Bunny

Tails

  Quote

What's your favorite Sonic song?

The series has been rather amazing for songs in the past. Though I've not particularly cared for their scrapping of any and all rock/metal from the series.

The winner has to go to What I'm Made Of from Sonic Heroes or With Me (Crush40 version) from Sonic and the Black Knight.

  Quote

Which was your favorite Sonic cartoon?

While I've only watched a fraction of Sonic X, and enjoyed what I have seen of it and it could easily rank as my favorite if I saw the whole thing, I gotta say Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. The world, the characters, the humor, the animation...simply the best. Even with the "teach all da kids" mentality in some parts, such as the Sonic Says portions, it managed to keep the most well put-together universe in the Sonic franchise.

As a side note, I find it ironic that Sonic was at his most mature and less of an idiot in Adventures than in SatAM which is by far the universe that needed him to be that way the most out of the cartoons. In the SatAM universe he's extremely immature and prone to stupidity and lacks a lot of common sense. I always thought the two Sonics belonged in each other's universes but at the same time I wouldn't want to change either series (except to actually finish SatAM in cartoon form. I believe it was turned into an audio-drama or something after the cliffhanger ending)

  Quote

Thoughts on Sonic Boom?

It looks amazing. The game looks like it'll be the best one yet and the show should follow suit. We haven't honestly seen much of the show though. The trailer was cool and all but it didn't tell us much beyond what type of humor they'll have.

I imagine it'll do quite well as a subseries though.

  Quote

Who's your favorite Voice Actor for Sonic?

Jaleel White, easily. Griffith and Drummand come as very close runner-ups but Jaleel captured the soul of Sonic best.

  Quote

Who's your favorite Voice Actor for your favorite character?

Can't rightly answer this one since I didn't pick a favorite!

Sally in SatAM had a smexy voice actor, the above-mentioned Jaleel White was amazing and Scott Dreier's Knuckles could kick it with the best of them.

There, that's my answer and I'm sticking to it.

  Quote

Who is your least favorite Sonic Character?

Tails in SatAM. Compared to all the other versions of Tails this one is easily the worst. He does nothing most of the series and it's only in one episode near the end where he starts getting his technical prowess again. Briefly.

I like Tails best when he's a mechanical genius. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog's Tails is now slouch though. At least then he's helpful to Sonic, even if for plot reasons they make him helpless in some situations and others he's the hero of the day.

  Quote

Who is your least favorite Sonic Voice Actor?

People are gonna jump on me for this but gotta go with Mike Pollock on this one. He's great in other roles, and he can be good as Eggman as well, but compared to Jim Cummings...Jim Cummings rocked the hell out of the Robotnik character.

  Quote

When did you become a Sonic fan?

I've been a fan since practically the beginning. I don't remember whether I played a game first or read the comics first, maybe a little of both, but I was dragged in instantly. I also remember seeing an episode of SatAM when I was reeeeeally young which caught my attention. All I remembered was Sally, Antoine and a checkered floor. The episode had to have been the one where Sally and Sonic go back in time but I must have seen at least one other episode to notice Antoine as well.

  Quote

What is your least favorite Sonic game?

Sonic Chronicles. In the end the game doesn't deliver as an RPG (as a huge RPG fan) and is too slow-paced for it's own good. Ironic considering it's a Sonic game.

I don't hate any game in the franchise but Chronicles easily ranks at the very bottom.

  Quote

and last...

What was your first Sonic game?

I've played the original Genesis ones but never actually owned a Genesis or these games. The first one I owned, and played thoroughly, was Adventure 2 on Gamecube. I had always been kind of a fan of Sonic from what little I'd seen but playing this one sent me over the edge into full-blown fanboyiness. Edited by Discordian

Agreed, I somewhat enjoyed '06, even managed to get all S Ranks with Sonic, but the loading times are ridiculous.

I can usually get around the glitches, but they're still not very fun.

I think I can saftley assume that we would still have the original Sonic VAs (Ryan Drummond and his crew) if Jim Cummings didn't pass away.

I think it was because of his death, SEGA re-auditioned the whole cast.

Then it became a trend for them, and now we're stuck with Roger, lol.

I think I can agree with this, I didn't care much for Chronicles, it's actually one of the very few Sonic games I haven't beaten.

I don't like turn-based RPGs, although this game got a good rating, and it was Sonic, I still couldn't go through with it.

However, I do like how in this game Shadow actually admits that Sonic is faster than him. ^^

I have a friend who used to be a die hard Shadow fan, and it killed him to hear me say that xD

Oh I have. I truly and honestly like the Wii version far more.

I still haven't beaten the PS360 one though. The collect-a-thon crap (one of the big reasons I don't like the game) has prevented me from getting any farther than Adabat, or whatever the place was called.

Same. The glitches would have been manageable if it weren't for the loading times to top it all off.

I actually didn't know the Jim Cummings had passed. Well damn. He was pretty amazing. Also did Pete in Disney stuff.

I don't mind that it was turn-based but the battles were too slow. Enemies had too much health and animations were far too long.

It's one of those games where if they had tweaked just a few things it would have been fine but as it is it's a really shoddy package.

I've played all 3 versions, I guess it's just the graphics that get me.

But yes, the medal collecting is a complete pain in the butt.

Also, I didn't care for the Werehog part, like many others.

It just sucked to me, honestly. :/

  Quote

Agreed, I think he played Eggman much better than Mike does, but he's still pretty great, don't get me wrong.

Honestly, if he were still alive, I think Sonic games would be in a different direction than how they are today.

Jim played the Eggman role with a fairly serious attitude, and Mike plays his role with a comedic attitude, he says he likes the voices he can have fun with, and that can make him laugh.

(I believe I've seen on a few interviews)

To this day, if Jim didn't pass away, I think we may have even gained a Sonic Adventure 3, just due to how Jim's Eggman voice was known in the Adventure games with such serious tone in them.

The Adventure games were serious-toned games, and although Mike played Eggman with a more serious attitude in Sonic '06 (ex Adventure 3, whether you like it or not), I still think Jim has a signature role as Eggman in the Adventure games.

Now, I'm not saying that just because Jim passed away, that there will never be an Adventure 3.

I'm one of those fans who would be thrilled to have an Adventure 3.

But I do think we would still have Ryan Drummond and all those other yahoos who voiced with him.

They were legendary VAs, being the first English VAs in the series.

I think if Ryan Drummond had the kind of voice directing that Roger has today, Sonic would sound 20% Cooler.

(See what I did there?)

However, we actually almost had that.

It's not very commonly known, but Ryan Drummond was actually almost Sonic's voice once again, right after Jason's time ended.

So, I think around Sonic Colors is when this went down.

SEGA actually re-auditioned every Sonic VA (from the games!) during this time, and apparently Ryan wiped the floor with Roger and (sadly) Jason.

But as time went on, shit went down and although Ryan already won the role of Sonic once again, he didn't get it for certain reasons.

It's bull, really.

I thought the Werehog was much better in the Wii version but the levels were better in the PS360 version. A lot of that is the bullshit-timed QTEs though.

Also, it's about time someone else agreed with me that Sonic 06 was, for all intents and purposes, Adventure 3 even if not in name. It had every element of an Adventure game.

I like how the Mach Speed sections in 06 (easily one of my favorite parts of the game) eventually turned into the boost gameplay we've had for the last few years. I love the boost gameplay.

It's really something Sonic fans in general don't like to discuss.

Yes, it did have every element of an Adventure game, like the 3rd mane hedgehog, the Chao in Space III sign, etc.

Since it was such disaster, people just like to forget it existed in general, which I can understand.

It was a bummer, may have been Sonic's worst designed game in his series, and all that.

But whether fans like to admit it or not, this game was originally intended to be Sonic Adventure 3.

I mean, have you seen the Alpha footage? This game looked sexy as hell.

But since the game was rushed, the game was reduced to it's beta version with plenty of bugs, and (what I believe) they saved the Adventure series/title/name by replacing it with "Sonic the Hedgehog".

What does everyone follow for Sonic news? Before a couple weeks ago I didn't really follow any Sonic-specific news sites or anything. Not totally sure why, I just never did it.

Recently I started following Tails' Channel. He's covered a bunch of news stuff about Sonic Boom since it's announcement and he seems to just share any Sonic news period.

Dunno if there's better places or not but it's kept me up-to-date on Sonic Boom at least.

*Checks google*

Oh, that. Meh, it's kinda kay. I guess time will tell as to what it's like. Still, the "And it's funny!" proclamation on the official website doesn't exactly fill me with confidence, but I guess that could just be their attempt to say to the parents of kids everywhere that "Yes, this show has action, but it's against robots, and it's totally a comedy show, so that makes it all okay!"

Who's your favorite Voice Actor for Sonic?

I liked the first and second ones. I know everyone hated the second one, but I thought he was okay.

Who's your favorite Voice Actor for your favorite character?

The first voice of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Who is your least favorite Sonic Character?

I'm not sure if there already was a Sonic thread, but shoot, why not? Sonic is king.

"Which is your favorite Sonic game?"

Sonic 3 And Knuckles for the Genesis, which is my favorite video game.

"What are your top 5 favorite Sonic games?"

(see above), Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, Nights: Into Dreams (this counts as Sonic IMO) and Sonic 4, Episode I.

"Who's your top 5 favorite Sonic characters?"

The blue guy himself, Sally Acorn, Espio, Knuckles, Tails in his more likeable moments.

"Who is your least favorite Sonic Character?"

Robotnik's mom. That bitch scares me.

"What's your favorite Sonic song?"

The Ice Cap Zone music from Sonic 3.

"Which was your favorite Sonic cartoon?"

The amazing SatAM, which ran from 1993-1995 and features the same universe found in the comics published by Archie.

"When did you become a Sonic fan?"

In 1994, when I was in kindergarten. A daycare I was attending had a Genesis with Sonic The Hedgehog 2, so I played it. It was the start of something beautiful.

"What is your least favorite Sonic game?"

Sonic 3D Blast. It's just a lousy disappointment. Stay away from it.

if Jim Cummings didn't pass away.

Jim Cummings is still alive dude. His Wikipedia page lists him as alive and his most recent voice performance was this year, 2014. Were you thinking of Baldry perhaps?

If Cummings was dead, we'd have lost Pooh. Scary thought.

Out of curiosity, how do you figure Nights and Sonic are one in the same? I know they are pretty intrinsically linked and often make references to each other but I've never come across a person that would consider Nights and Sonic the same franchise. O-o

They aren't really the same but they're similar enough that I thought I could get away with listing Nights without being scrutinized by anyone.

I thought wrong.

Tricky tricky.

Never mess with a Sonic fanboy.

The only real similarities I see is the concept of speed though. If you think otherwise, do elaborate.

Note: Even if it sounds like it, I'm not attacking you. I know I come across that way, especially when talking about Sonic.
