Ponyville is a kingdom now. (technically speaking) So what happens to Mayor Mare?

This isn't Twilight's job.

Ok, to inject a bit of sense into this thread, it's quite safe to say that Mayor Mare retains her job of looking after Ponyville. If anything, Twilight has no such jurisdiction over the town. She is purely the Princess of Friendship, and so her main concern is that there is harmony throughout the land. Mayor Mare's position is perfectly safe, although I imagine she'll be wanting to know what will replace the public library, seeing as Twilight's eponymous castle is sitting atop it.

I think she'll be more worried about paying for the restoration of the land destroyed during Twilight's battle, unless Celestia is willing to pay for it or something.

I would love episode focused on the less used speaking characters in the show. Maybe community leaders have become complacent with presence of Princess Twilight and in an episode where she is gone Mayor Mare, Cherilee, The Cakes, etc have to stave off a disaster.

Is her castle really on top of the old library? I didn't get that impression. It looked like it formed behind the town where all that land was cleared during Twilight's and Tirek's battle. And in the last scene there is a lake that seems to abut the walls of the castle, and there was no such lake next to the library.

 

In any case, it's funny the role of the mayor is coming up again, as it did similarly after Twi became a princess last season. This time however it's worth a little more examination since Twilight now officially has a "kingdom", and I'm not sure how a town next to her castle cannot be part of her kingdom. Unless her kingdom is metaphorical, that is, "The Kingdom of Friendship"?

 

Anyhoo I agree the mayor will probably still run the minutia and administrative tasks for Ponyville/Twilight's kingdom and Twilight will attend to broader issues.

 

If not, maybe she should move to Canterlot? Canterlot has never had a mayor and frankly with Celestia and Luna being "national" leaders it might be good for that city to finally have one officially. The way it is now it's like the President of the US or the Prime Minister of England also running Washington DC and London, respectively!

I don't see Mayor Mare's position changing and it's likely that Canterlot has it's own mayor too. The other issue is exactly what Twilight's Kingdom will encompass. Is it Ponyville or as the Princess of Friendship is her kingdom the whole planet? A lot of unknowns.

Mayor Mare will get arrested and convicted of embezzling campaign funds for her own private uses. After this, everyone decides that the mayoral position isn't something that should be democratically decided and the Princesses start appointing mayors themselves, like Supreme Court Justices in the United States currently are done. Hooray for autocracy!

Exactly the point. However, I think I'm actually wrong about the castle's location, considering where the castle sprouted, the area was isolated. The library stood between two houses, as far as I can remember.

There's a Queen, House of Commons, House of Lords. I don't mind seeing a political system like that in "Twi's Kingdom."
