Lightning Bliss 1,674 May 16, 2014 Share May 16, 2014 It defiently looks like its catering to all ages and is no longer afraid of taking 'risks' as I call it. No more messing about with innocent no fighting yadda yadda. Sorry people I know friendship and harmony is important, but sometimes once in awhile YOU HAVE TO FIGHT FOR THAT FRIENDSHIP AND HARMONY!! My point is, I'm glad the show is not afraid to show a bit of a upper lip, and display some violence in a good vs evil sort of way. 2 I'm just a silly little alicorn, trying to get by in the fandom ^^ The Lightning Bliss Show Lightning Bliss DevianArt

Radiance64 7,053 May 16, 2014 Share May 16, 2014 Waking up to what? MLPFiM has always had moments like that where they've tried to reach out to a wider audience, big like that fight scene and small like little references they sprinkle around here and there all the time. It's part of why I love the show so much in the first place personally.
The Crimson Cross 7,532 May 16, 2014 Share May 16, 2014 I don't know if Hasbro are "waking up"or not, but I do think that they are appealing to an older audience here. Maybe they realise they can make more money that way, I don't know for sure and I haven't looked at much statistics for the show. I personally don't know what to think about the Rainbow Powers and all, the way I see it there was something for everyone in the last episode. MLP could use some more action, and I think that it will widen their audiences by airing more of that kind of thing. I don't know about anyone else, but those action scenes got me really excited for what they are going to put in season 05. 1 Now with more added tea leaves! Creamy Arty 6,252 May 16, 2014 Share May 16, 2014 I'd say Hasbro has been aware all along as well as attentive to us. This fight scene had a clear purpose and fit well within the episode. Lack of such scenes before now doesn't seem like them being clueless about us so much as they just didn't have such an opportunity with previous villains and situations. Hasbro/DHX has made it clear on several occasions that they're aware of us, through merchandise, advertisements, and tiny shout outs in the episodes themselves. And really, only now becoming aware of how large our presence is should encourage them to stay their course rather than changing things. Obviously we loved the show as it was, so it would make more sense to leave it that way. More likely they'd be trying to captivate the portion of the target demographic that's beginning to age out of it than make a nod to us. Sometimes I think they do things as much for their own amusement as that of the audience too. This adult brony actually prefers the calmer, slice of life episodes more than the action-packed ones, and I'm glad they're typically kept to premiers and finales. Hopefully this won't become something we see regularly throughout the series. 3 Kyoshi made this ^^ Come join us on Equestria.tv on Fridays at 6 PM Eastern for our weekly movie nights! Adorkable 2,737 May 16, 2014 Share May 16, 2014 While My Little Pony has been somewhat aimed for younger female audiences, it's pretty clear that with FiM, Hasbro has clearly extended that reach beyond it's original target audience. So, yes! I think they have. ^^
Looking Glass 197 May 16, 2014 Share May 16, 2014 I think that sort of thought is sort of an implication that action or coolness or violence isn't for "little girls". Granted, you're correct in saying that it's definitely not being stereotypical in what is commonly thought of as a "girl's show", but do try not to fall into the same stereotypes the fandom is trying to shake off. Not three years ago were the lot of us complaining about being stereotyped about watching something deemed unmasculine or playing in a park that doesn't belong to us. If we want the pretty pony princess park to be open to us, we have to in turn open up the battlefield for them. i agree with this, who says girls cant enjoy awesome explosions as much as guys! plus, this show was meant to be more gender neutral than the previous gens. something mainly for the girls, but the boys and parents could also enjoy (or at least tolerate) My AMA: https://mlpforums.com/topic/163911-talk-to-the-looking-glass-and-it-will-talk-back/
Krosp I 114 May 16, 2014 Share May 16, 2014 When Hasbro and DHX says that they're aware of us, or know that we're here, I think it's less of a pat on the back and "Welcome to the team" and more of "Welcome to the party". I'd rather think us more like guests than anything. We're welcomed into a warm home, sharing experiences and and trading banter back and forth with friendly hosts. Mama DHX and Papa Hasbro are throwing a party for their daughter, the primary demographic of the series. We're welcome to the table, but the delicious food wasn't made specifically for us and it would be utterly rude to make demands or requests or complain about the decor. But who doesn't love a party? We're all having a lot of fun, aren't we? It'd be a crime, as an honored guest, to steal the party from that little girl and not helping her to have the best time she can have so early in her life.
StormBolt24 117 May 16, 2014 Share May 16, 2014 (edited) I have not been watching show anymore, so I cannot tell my opinion to this. But I think that's the least I can do and enver watch it. NavelColt 22,882 May 16, 2014 Share May 16, 2014 The extent of Hasbro's input has to do with inclusions of themes they need to have in toylines, and I imagine some amount of overall direction planning goes on with them and the studio. That's about it. DHX runs the show, as employed by Hasbro. I also agree with some past notes. I'm all good on keeping a good balance of what we've always had, and keeping these epic-esque episodes to an amount that's not too little, but not too much as to keep their savory factor at maximum.
Forlong 1,726 May 16, 2014 Share May 16, 2014 Yeah, they were totally blind to our existence until now. Were have you been? Hasbro has known about us since this all started. They never had any problem with adults watching the show. Makes us more likely to buy the toys for the kids in our lives. As for the show getting more serious, that's all standard procedure. MLP is the Hub's bread and butter, so they're giving the writers more freedom to work their magic. simba86 1,541 May 16, 2014 Share May 16, 2014 This particular version of Tirek was the most dark and disturbing villain in the franchises history, the credit goes the DHX for making it so but even so Hasbro still had to approve this so there probably was quite a bit of back and forth between DHX and Hasbro on this but you can't argue with results. These kind of episodes aren't going to come up very often but with this precedent it is quite possible that we will see more like this and whether it is with original villains or they bring back more G1 villains like Grogar or the Smooze. Hasbro still wants to keep little girls and families on board while still keeping its new found brony audience and of course most bronies are pleased with the depiction of Tirek and I haven't heard any major outcry from parents which is very encouraging. actually you could even say that it has taken 4 seasons just to get to the villains and action that was in the original g1 series, in the 1980s hasbro decided that because dungeons and dragons style things was so popular that they would incorporate that kind of thing into the my little pony franchise to win over viewers from shows like he-man, and that is why you saw a very dark first show with tirek using the rainbow of darkness to turn pretty much everything into deamons and dragons, and then later on into the 1990s 2000s the kinds of demonic darkness was not as popular and hasbro shifted gears and turned the series into a very girly show, now they are pushing the envelope and going back to the shows roots by realizing that they can keep it a girl oriented show but include elements that everyone else like dudes can like also, 2 It's better to die on your feet than to live on your knees! The major G4 villains were good but not at all like the G1 villains until now, King Sombra could have been but he just wasn't fleshed out enough which is a shame with how much potential he had. SBaby 660 May 18, 2014 Share May 18, 2014 (edited) Or you know, maybe girls can enjoy this kind of stuff as well. I enjoyed Dragon Ball Z when I was little, and yes, I actually enjoyed it for the action. Not to mention, Sailor Moon was geared toward young girls, and there were points where it was really dark and violent. A dude gets IMPALED in one episode, and the Senshi die numerous times. So yeah, the point is, girls can handle alot more than writers often give them credit for. So while this episode didn't deal with as much mature subject matter (aka, the other members of the mane 6 didn't ask Twilight to go home this time, because they needed to protect the Princess), it was still memorable with its dark villain and epic showdown. Now do I think Hasbro is starting to 'get it'? Well, I think Hasbro is a business that is trying to make money. I don't know if they're 'getting it' with this new direction, or if it's just a clever way to cash in on a change to the status quo. Probably the latter, but I'm not them. Krosp I 114 May 18, 2014 Share May 18, 2014 A dude gets IMPALED in one episode, and the Senshi die numerous times. If I recall correctly, one of the most frightening scenes I remember as a child was either a youma or Jadeite had psychic control over a passenger airplane and was using it to run down the Senshi. They turned it back on him and for about 30 seconds it was the antagonist's terror of being killed by airplane.
