Do dragons raise their young?

The quote from Dragon Quest about asking sarcastically if Spike rode on Mommy's back on the migration indicates that mother dragons do have SOME form of maternal instincts.

I think the dragon society is heavily influenced by their greed for treasure. A mother dragon keeps her young close until they are old enough to be a threat to her treasure then casts them out. The young dragons joins other young dragons in bachelor (bachelorette?) groups until one is old enough to successfully hoard treasures on their own.

The way I think of dragons is the same way I think of dinosaurs.  What i mean is lay there eggs, raise their young for a few weeks, then leave them to take care of their own.

In that dragon episode (I wasn't particularly fond of) wasn't there parent dragons in the migration?

Or do they just simply just let them run rampart?

Though that might not be a problem seeing as spike has grown from hoarding before!

On another note, I think that Spike was somehow separated from his parents too.

It would make sense!

I think dragons do raise their young, but I'm not sure. The most inference I can draw about this would be from the Dragon Quest episode in season 2. The adult dragons did not seem to interact with the teenage dragons at all, but that doesn't necessarily mean they never do. It's likely they were just allowing them to do what they want for the most part.

However, I did get the impression that the adult dragons take a tough and partially apathetic approach to the raising of their offspring, but that's mostly speculation.

In regard to Spike's encounter with an adult dragon, it is likely that the dragon didn't care about Spike since he wasn't in his family.

It would be interesting to see future episodes about dragons so we can gain more information about their true nature and role (if they have one) in Equestria.

remember the episode when spike grew to a big dragon
its because of the greediness of a dragon the when spike encountered an adult one, its attacked him because the dragon is thinking the spike will eat his treasure>>>>>  :derp:

The only dragon I remember trying to kill him was a the green one. That was a big male and he snuck into his lair so that makes sense.

Since they're intelligent beings they must normally teach their offspring things.

Someone brings up a decent point... We haven't seen any female dragons in the show... I wonder how they would be represented

They are too busy taking care of the hatchlings.

I'm sure they raise them to an extent. For example, the teenage dragons seemed to have an awful lot of freedom since their weren't any adults around. But I'm sure there's at least one fully grown dragon in charge. Or maybe there isn't, and they have to fend for themselves. Spike's egg was probably all alone when Celestia found it. I mean, surely she didn't steal it.

Wait... Celestia didn't give the egg to twilight... The school did... Now I know that Celestia owns the school and all but she arrives after the egg is hatched... Maybe dragon eggs aren't as uncommon as you'd think... That or maybe Celestia knew spikes mom?
