Is it me, or are chunks of generation 1 starting to appear in generation 4?

I mean Lord Tirek was the villain of the season 4 finale, and I heard that he appeared in generation 1.

Not to mention Firefly was mentioned in "testing 1 2 3", was that the same firefly?

It's hardly new, there are other things taken from other generations in FiM.

Cant say what off the top of my head though.

I'm really glad this is happening. Faust originally wanted to bring back gen. 1 characters, but due to copywright laws, she was asked to do a completely new reboot. It only makes sense that they'd bring some aspects of gen. 1 back. It was the generation that inspired FiM, after all.

Well, the whole point is that they're rebooting the show. Applejack was in G1, as well, you know, as well as Spike. Even Twilight was a character in gen 1, which heavily inspired Twilight Sparkle as we know her. In addition, Twilight's gen 1 appearance was an influence for the design of Twilight's mother.

Long story short, things from G1 aren't "starting to appear," they've already been there and actually influenced Lauren Faust heavily in her creation of G4.

Considering a lot of FiM takes a lot of inspiration from G1 right down to the main characters, it's not really surprising

Actually, this cartoon has always had a lot of G1 one in it. A many elements from the G1 pilot, Rescue From Midnight Castle, made their way into the G4 opener.

-Several of the featured ponies, namely Twilight, Firefly, and Applejack, are direct predecessors of the Mane 6.

-Spike!  :P

-The home of the troll the ponies get the rainbow from serves as the model for Twilight's library.

-A villain who wishes to bring about eternal night.

-A rainbow used to defeat said villain.

There are a few more connections too but I can't recall them off the top of my head.

Not exactly but you're on the right path. This was a nod to the original Firefly.

There's also the dragon gang from G1, an episode which was pretty much taken bit for bit and redone into Dragon Quest. Spike goes out to learn how to act like a dragon and such, meets a bunch of douchebag dragons, they start being douchebags, and Spike ultimately leaves and goes back to the ponies. Redone for G4 into the Dragon Quest episode.

She kind of still did in a way, their personalities for the most part are the same as Faust originally intended but because they lost the trademark for many of them years ago the only G1 name they could re use was Applejack. There have been many G1 references in G4 ever since the beginning of the series. Tirek originally used his rainbow of darkness to try to bring in the "night that never ends" and was defeated by the rainbow of light (Nightmare Moon, elements of harmony).

I believe you meant the Moochick and not a troll?  lol he's a wizard who lives in the mushroom forest.  Trolls live under bridges!

I myself have noticed the fandom as a whole appears to be tentatively embracing elements from G1 more and more.  It's gone from something modern day bronies abhor to the butt of some jokes to now providing the bad assest villain the show has seen.  I think if the trend continues we could see some interesting elements from G1 continue to appear (Smooze anypony?)

As others have said, they've always been there, which is why I think it's kind of funny that a few Bronies have said they don't like old elements being brought back when several characters are old elements brought back.

Regardless, I really want to see something done with Scorpan in Season Five because Spike and him were bros in G1.

Considering Fausts love for G1 growing up she kinda created the ultimate fan fiction in a sense. She drew from elements of the original show and focusing on adding more substance and characterization ... and nuance.

Didn't scorpan die? This would explain why he didnt appear in the season 4 finale

They didn't say whether or not he died, but I'm guessing he might have returned to the land that he and his brother Tirek originally came from.

The concepts from G1 that Lauren had rebooted in G4 and FIM are the basis for what the show has become as she created it.

Technically, I wouldn't want to call it like that as you put it since they've always been there but made and rebooted for a new generation.

Faust wanted to use a lot more original G1 ponies in FiM, but the trademarks on their names had expired for all of them except Applejack. Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie were originally going to be portrayed as Twilight, Sparkler, Posey, Firefly and Surprise, respectively, but Twilight ended up having "Sparkle" appended to her name and the others were switched to names of ponies from G3 whose trademarks were still in place. In some cases, the change in names were the only thing that really changed. Rarity, for example, is basically identical to Sparkler, right down to the cutie mark.

Spike is the only character to have consistently appeared in every animated version of My Little Pony, right from the start.

The mention of General Firefly in Testing Testing 1, 2, 3 was actually a nod by the writer to Lauren Faust, who uses fyre_flye as a twitter handle. Faust took that name from Firefly the pony, however.

I never watched any of G1 MLP, but I know that Tirek, the rainbow, and breezies were all from earlier versions of MLP.

I wonder why they're doing that, maybe just for reference? ^^
