gaming Any Doom gamers around?

So, recently, I've finished the whole Doom 3 BFG Edition, and I felt like making a thread about the franchise.

My first experience with Doom was when I was around 5 years old, but it didn't quite hooked me because I played Duke Nukem 3D beforehand, but it stuck in my memories, specially the Mr Cacos. But I later played the 64 version and I felt like playing it, but I had my problems:

1- I didn't had a Memory Pack

2- I was stuck, FOR YEARS, at the 6th level

3- I've finally got the memory pack and unstuck myself of the 6th level....... only to BE STUCK FOR GOD KNOWS MANY MOAR YEARS AT THE 8TH LEVEL, FUCK, I WANTED TO REACH HELL SOON

I still play the originals to this day, mostly Ultimate Doom. Have pretty much every version of it ever made, basically only missing Atari and Sega versions since I never had those consoles. Have Doom 3 (both physical and steam versions) as well, though I don't play it that much. Didn't think it was all that great. I also have the GBA versions around here somewhere, even if I can't play them anymore since my DS broke, I really should find them. I have a shirt with the poster/boxart image on it, as well as the original QuakeCon shirt with just the DOOM logo on it. You could say I'm "slightly" obsessed when it comes to classic Doom. I can't get the game to run in Windows 8 anymore, so I use the Doomsday engine. It's pretty sweet, adds some effects like transparency and stuff. I play using the classic sprites/controls instead of the newer options, I prefer the original. Plain and simple.

Have a pic of my "shrine". Chex's Quest is based off Doom, uses it's engine and stuff, only with cereal pieces. It's actually pretty fun. Added Duke Nukem 3D since you mentioned it, another of my childhood favorites.

One of my favorite games of all time. Favorite is probably Ultimate Doom, can't remember how many times I played through the first episode. ^_^

You mean you actually get through the whole episode? I find myself playing the first level over and over, as well as the Secret Base (the music on that level  :squee: ). And the Wolfenstein level in Doom II.

Forgot to mention, I have the soundtrack as well. The songs sound pretty sweet in-game and go with the mood great, but hearing them as they were meant to be heard instead of MIDI just takes them to a whole new level. *insert mind blown emote here*

The shareware version was all I could afford being 10 at the time  Although Ultimate Doom is my favorite, Doom II is right up there with it. Super Shotgun (not that the BFG isn't super-awesome) but sometimes you just needed a down to (hell on) earth gun with enough ammo to go around. Plus it makes a nice BOOM. And the arch-vile... heh.

Agree with you on the soundtrack, though there's a certain charm to hearing it on FM synth... I  it.

I'm a sucker for the original sniper rifle shotgun, although the Super does come in handy for taking down Pinkies.  :okiedokielokie:

And pretty much everything else up to and including a Baron.  B)  My fondest (...maybe not the right word) memory of it was running back to a friend with the blue key and he shoots me at point blank with it.

"I had the key, man. What was that for?"

"I didn't think it would kill you!"

Later, he was having some trouble with a cacodemon, so I told him had his back. I had a BFG.

This game. I need to go back and play it.

Oh god, the first time I saw one of the Barons...  :(  AND THEN THEY BECOME REGULAR ENEMIES!!  :umad:

Can't say I've ever touched multiplayer in a Doom game, though if they would just remake the original Imp for Imp for modern PCs I'd imagine multi could be a blast.

Just thought of something else I forgot to mention (I'm doing far too many things at once tonight), I own the novels as well. The first one... it's like everything I imagined Doom would be like in real life, right there on the pages on a book. It takes the game, pretty much level by level, and adds to it on so many levels. To do a Doom movie right, all they would have to do is use the books as the script honestly. Come on Hollywood! I'm sure you want to remake it since remakes are all you do now! Do it right this time!  :fiery:

I loved DOOM 1 - 3, and I consider the DOOM series to be > any war-based FPS, past or recent.  I don't even care for FPS games in general, but again - love me some DOOM. xD  Even back in the days of 2D, fireball-slinging imps, there was atmosphere.  A sense of tension before you hit a switch.  Or before you opened a door and it friggin' screamed at you lol (that door sound is still unnerving and instantly recognizable).

I know the average Doom player is more fast paced, killing demonic assholes like badasses Rambo style, while listening to catchy and upbeat music. I'm not one of them, I preffer to take my time, turn the music off to make the games more atmospheric. Maybe it's because my first full experiences with the franchise were darker and more atmospheric, namely Doom 64 and Doom 3, which are kinda the black sheep because of that. It might also helped that Doom 64 had an accidental build up with it's final boss. Most of us had an awful bad experience the first time we faced the Cyberdemon (unless it's the Doom 3 one, he's a giant sized wimp XD). I had mine at the 17th level of Doom 64, he kicked my butt, BIG TIME. Once I FINALLY killed him, and finding out he wasn't the final boss, I've spent the rest of the game with dread, dread of finding ANOTHER cyber, or the actual final boss

I like me some doom. Doom 1 and 2 are my favourites.

Doom 3 was some lame corridor crawler, nothing like actual doom.

I'm hoping Doom 4 is actually decent, but I doubt it we'll be lucky if it doesn't have health regen.

Doom. Awesome game. I played it on every single platform I can remember. And all of the versions are AWEFUL.

The only good version is the original on PC and the PS1 version and that's it.

The main problem comes from missing or simplified levels and missing monsters. If you only played it on console, then you would not think it's bad but if you compare the console versions to the PC one, you immediately see the difference.

I do like the music. Again, the PC version has the best music in my opinion.

I played the original DOS version but I do have the WIn95 version as well.

Getting it to work on Windows 8 was a miracle and it did take me quite a few hours.

I had the SNES version. I was blown away by the supreme power of the SuperFX2 chip and its inability to render ceiling and floor textures. The music wasn't that terrible though, 32X probably takes that crown.

A source port makes it so much easier to run on modern OSes but if you're looking for the classic experience, Chocolate Doom will let you do that without all the headache of trying to get it to run on 8 natively (amazed that you did)

It's ironic that the 100% organic Cyberdemon is WAY harder than...... any Cyberdemon that we know   :o

Harbinger.png

Why is he that hard? he's tough, his flaming claw applies burn, and if he's in a distance, he bodyslams you, he can recover, can only be damaged by the Spear of Destiny, and worse, his insanely high evasion. He's actually impossible to beat without applying serums. He's the final boss of Wolfenstein RPG, and belongs to the Doom RPGs timeline, in fact, BJ is ancestor of the Doomguy in Doom RPG 2, HE EVEN SHARES THE NAME

I remember playing Doom back on PC, but personally, I preferred Wolfenstein over Doom.   Still a great classic though, :)

Wolfenstein New Order was a competent game, that gives me faith that Doom 4 would be great too under this new direction. Hopefully, Doom 4 follows the example of New Order of not including health regen

I honestly hope that this "reimagination" of Doom more closely resembles the original two, though. That short trailer gives me some hope.

From what I heard, Bethesda basically lost hope in Doom. The whole franchise is going to have to really blow expectations out of the water and reboot the series in a way that more clearly gives people what they want from Doom, instead of a hallway crawler like 3 was. If 4 doesn't meet that expectation, the greatest game series ever might be looking at very tough times ahead. If it doesn't make it, I have a feeling Duke Nukem would have an easier time coming back then Doom (especially since we've yet to see a true Duke game from the new owners).

That being said, the new Cyberdemon does give me great hope. I'm really hoping we see some awesome enemy redesigned all around though that move towards classic looks instead of Doom 3's versions. And I want to fight some wicked Barons that actually resemble the originals instead of those things from 3. I love that they used the door opening sound from the originals.  :squee:

I wonder if our old friend will keep his rockets or he'll swap them with plasma projectiles  , that doesn't look like it fires rockets. Hell, it would make sense if bosses possess multiple weapons in this game, instead of only one

Doom can't possibly end up worse than Duke Nukem Forever. I refuse to believe it. :(  That being said, I don't know if Gearbox ever intends to bring back Duke. DNF was such a bust (and everyone saw it coming) and they seem to be far more interested in bolstering their homegrown IPs (i.e. Borderlands) never mind about that whole Colonial Marines fiasco.

I don't expect it to be the best thing ever, but I do hope it to be a worthy addition to the series.

Oh I'm sure they'll do something with Duke, or else they wasted their money. Everyone is hopefully smart enough to know DNF was not Gearbox's brainchild, they pretty much just purchased Duke and said "Get that damn game out the door, we're not pouring resources into it and we're not going to let it go to waste". If anyone can bring back Duke, it's Gearbox.

And along those same lines, if anyone can save Doom, it's Bethesda. So long as they treat it with the same enthusiasm and respect they seem to put into the Fallout series when they acquired it.

I started playing the original DOOM games after I bought them during this years Steam Summer Sale.

Unfortunately, I never played them when I was young, so this is my first time playing them.

What I can say though is that these games were way ahead of their time during the MS-DOS age! :)

I like them, in case you were wondering anyways.
