Have the writers been foreshadowing Sunset Shimmer's return?

Specifically, her return to Equestria. There were lines at the at the beginning and ending of EQG 1, where Celestia says that she wanted SS to return to Equestria, and later at the end of the movie, instead of inquiring whether Twilight's ok as she comes back through the mirror, instead asks about Sunset Shimmer's well-being, soon as she notices she's not with Twilight.

 

Then there's the fact that Celestia held onto Sunny's book up to the point in EQG 2, hoping to keep in contact with her, up until she gave the book Sunset wrote to her in to Twilight, once Twi got her new castle. I can't imagine that Celestia- the pony who can have visions of the future and plan out events to move ponies into place how she wants, would do this without reason.

 

Then there's Sunset's cutie mark, representing yin and yang- balance and harmony between two opposite forces. Much like how Celestia and Luna represent yin and yang; moon and sun. Sunset and Twilight are opposites, and likely meant to rule together, as the royals sisters do.

 

Then there's Sunset Shimmer's foreshadowed phoenix transformation, which very blatantly hint toward her eventually becoming an Alicorn princess, after she returns to Equestria and some time passes, for her to master her special talent.

 

Then there's the line in "My Past is Not today", where Sunset says "and then your friendship found me. And it felt like I was HOME" This would have to mean her home, as in Equestria. Because love and friendship are prominent there- thanks to the Crystal heart transmitting it across all of Equestria, along with the elements of harmony present. Friendship was never something she received in the human world, before she made the Mane 5 her friends, so she wouldn't be talking about that world, but rather Equestria.

 

I can sense she's starting to get homesick, and will return to Equestria, due to all the obvious foreshadowing from many sources.

then how, exactly, would YOU interpret what she sang/ said? Where else would her home be, with the warm fuzzies her "friends" gave her, only after the first movie? She couldn't possibly be talking about the human world, with all the students who treated her like garbage through the first and second movie. i agree with hypno, why would she just want to leave her new friends just like that, plus she is new to the friendship thing and well i love her in the human world, she is just amazing in the human world = but that is just me being biased-ish

Because having 2 Sunny's in 1 world could threaten (or already has threatened) not one, but 2 world's, whether they end up coming into contact with each other or not? (did you not read the IDW MLP's "Reflection" arc?)

Because life isn't fair, and you have to do what's good for the sake of not having the universe do crazy sh***t, like trying to merge the two worlds, or set up instances where 1 Sunny could be killed (or nuked with some magical elements and blown to pieces like Sombra), for the other to remain living in the same world, ect ect.

First of all, the comics are the expanded universe. So everything that happens there, is not canon, or atleast everything that happens there, is not impacted by the show.

Twilight and Celestia prevented the other pony mane 5 from going with Twilight, out of fear that they didn't know what would happen if they had more duplicates crossing over into the same world, possibly coming into contact with each other? Is that not enough reason for the pony Sunny to return?

 

Also, you don't think it'd be FAR easier for Sunny to make friends in a world that's- I dunno- set up to beam friendship and harmony into ponies- with the Crystal Heart being able to radiate it all over Equestria, and the ponies who represent the EoH spreading their own influence and teachings? Really?

Like you said. It is incredibly vague. It really dosen't help, that the script for the first movie, was bad. If you liked it, fine by me. But instead of giving me something vague, or some kind of headcanon, give me something that is actually there.

I'd say that's hinting the opposite — that she'll stay in the human world because she feels at home there.

 

As much as I'd love Sunset Shimmer to return to Equestria, I can't see it happening soon. That said, season 6 is apparently as good as confirmed (presumably in 2016), and season 7 (2017) and 8 (2018) are tentatively planned, and there's a film planned in 2017 too.

 

So perhaps the film could be used as a way to get Sunset back into Equestria? Imagine: season 7 finale, they destroy the big bad guy, and then just as they're all celebrating, last few seconds of the season, there's a flash of light and Sunny's standing there. Says something like, "listen up, girls, Equestria's in big trouble", then cue theme song.

 

Then the film has Sunny helping out the mane 6 with whatever problem she came to warn them about. Along the way she resolves her problems with Celestia, and she decides to return to Equestria. Then in season 8 she's a regular character, perhaps Twilight's faithful student. (And if it were up to me, she'd also be Twilight's waifu.)
