Y'know, in hindsight, I'm a little surprised Rarity and APplejack didn't switch pets.
Rarity would be the type to own a tea cup chihuahua or a Pomeranian while I could see AJ owning a cat or two in her barn.

Guessing, owls are supposed to represent wisdom so he's with Twilight but Owlowiscious being an old barn owl and Applejack's pet would've been neat.
