Trixie Lulamoon 8 August 17, 2012 Share August 17, 2012 I tend to avoid fanfics - I'm not entirely sure of all the reasons why I'm reluctant to read any pony fics, but I do know this is one of them. I mean, it doesn't affect any image I have of anything canon, because well - canon is canon, can't change that! But if the fanfic deals with something like say, backstory that's never been covered, it'll *kind of* change my views about events in episodes I see in the next week or so - and I personally don't like that. I like watching episodes with my mind as pretty much a blank slate - ideally, all I know about the ponies is what the creators choose to tell us...my mind will speculate plenty on its own! Coolius rpi 117 August 17, 2012 Share August 17, 2012 Fanfics arent canon, so they dont really change anyhting for me. I dont go around thinking that fluttershy is a hooker and Big Macintosh is a serial killer, do I? LOL!
Dusk Lunar-Blaze 17 August 17, 2012 Share August 17, 2012 I've read so many violent fanfics, and I tend to fear the characters for a short time after reading them. For example, after reading Cheerilee's Garden, I couldn't even stand staring at her in any of the episodes for a few months. Rainbow Factory didn't change my view at all. I just enjoyed how well written it was. Also, after reading Sweet Apple Massacre, I had a fear of Big Mac for the few following months. Eeyup. Except for Cupcakes. Cupcakes didn't scare me at all, and I'm not being sarcastic here. Yea, none of them messed with me. Sweet apple massacre I hated. Raping the CMC and violently killing them? I dont like big mac as much anymore ): Everytime I see him I imagine him raping Sweetie Belle and pissing in her Anyone up for a romance RP? I used to be a stranger 7,994 August 17, 2012 Share August 17, 2012 I take the fanon and canon as entirely different things, even when they're very similar. This is because even casual innuendo by a single character in a fan-fiction would make the entire land of Equestria operate on a different level than the TV show (since the show will never explore anything like Libido.) TrueBolt 12 August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 Comming from a fanfic fanatic, I have to say that, yes, some fanfics have slightly changed the way I see Equestria, the characters therin, and the MLP world. 'Flight of the Alicorn' for example turned my least favorite pony Rarity into a kind of idol. I now see her as an inteligent, suportive mare who loves to help her friends (and the ocasional stranger) wheneve she can. Not unlike myself actualy. XD Even after 'Dog and Pony Show' I saw her as a stuck up fashionista without a backbone, but the formentioned fic drasticly changed my outlook. (For the better if I do say so myself. LOL) It also caused me to look at Blueblood from a different angle. Another fic that changed the way I thought of the show and characters was 'Griffin the Griffin'. It led me to wonder what lies beyond Equestria, and why certain species are treated differently dispite there aperant intelegence. Angel Bunny. He is sometimes more agravating rememberfull (hah! made that one up on the spot! ) than Fluttershy, but is still her "pet". Sheep and other animals have also been 'domesticated' even though they apear to be smart enough to make their own livings and have a home of their own despite the language barier. I duno about impacting my views on the nature of the show or possibities of ponies being 'racist', but it lead me to wonder about Equestria as a whole, and what may lay beyond. I like green. Modphase 1,271 August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 (edited) Yeah, I look at both of them as two different worlds, and I'm glad I do. But I haven't read that many, and I really hope I find the time to read some. Edited August 18, 2012 by Lil' Tokyo

Awwww! =( Fanfics are amasing in and of themselves. I know not everyone thinks that, but it shows the fandom's inate ability to expound apon small things that are uniquely interesting to the author. The only difference between the authors of fanfics and of best-selling novels, (Besides that best-sellers rake in a LOT more dough...) is that novelists generally think up a story that has nothing to do with anything concerning other stories, while fanfic writers steal get their bass ideas from other novels, shows, movies and whatnot. C. S. Louis created a whole new demention for his stories, but if someone else thought of something cool that they wanted to write as a story, and were not woried about making a profit out of it, is it bad if they locate the said story in his Narnia if it fits? .... That didn't quite mean what I wanted it to... Actually it didn't even pertain to what you said. Wow. Anyway, anyone who enjoys pleasure reading should give fanfics a chance. If you read a few and just don't like them in general, then I can't blame you. I couldn't anyway. XD Reading a fanfic for someone, might be like reading historical fiction is for me. lol Just not my taste you know? Edited August 18, 2012 by TrueBolt I like green. TheFabulousPony 102 August 29, 2012 Share August 29, 2012 They don't change my view on Equestria at all. They are fan fics, so I don't link them to the actual show at all lol although on occasion I lol to myself when watching the show when I remember certain things from fanfics lol. Bendy 1,821 August 29, 2012 Share August 29, 2012 Fan fiction has no effect what's so ever on my views on the show, since they are not canon and take place in parallel universes than the show itself. PonyEcho 1,610 August 29, 2012 Share August 29, 2012 my opinion doesn't change in any way i've always been a Canon over Fanon person the only time i'll turn to fanon is if there is something outside of the canon that has no way of being changed... it also has to be good. for example Derpy has lazy eyes= canon, Derpy is a attack on the mentally challenged= fanon followed by a f k you Celestia had a sense of humor = canon, Celestia is a troll/ molester = fanon im starting to think that fanon is a bad thing. my DA http://heavyecho.deviantart.com/ check my stuff out the Anime Club http://mlpforums.com/topic/48196-the-anime-club/ plz join us
Pinkie D Pie 1,036 November 14, 2012 Share November 14, 2012 It depends on the fanfic really. They don't really effect to much. Things like the gorefics I read I never let effect me, because I know none of that would ever happen. However the really good fics that come up with clever ideas sometimes get there ideas moved up into my heads view of Equestira and stay there until they are gone. 1 My OC's Shadow Stalker/Aarod Brachuin/Dark Chocolate/Cocoa
DoctorWhovian1902 596 November 15, 2012 Share November 15, 2012 (edited) I definitely look at the show differently. After reading "Cupcakes", I couldn't look at Pinkie Pie the same way, but I always try to remind myself that the canon Pinkie wouldn't do something like that. Same thing with "The Experiments of Twilight Sparkle", that was even worse than "Cupcakes" in my opinion. "Rainbow Factory" wasn't really as memorable as the former two, mostly because it wasn't as gruesome or disturbing to me, so it really didn't affect me much. But that's just grimdark fics, the HiE fics make me wish I could go to Equestria, even just for a day. I'm pretty sure every brony would. Also, "My Little Dashie"...the story nearly moved me to tears. I can't look at Rainbow Dash the same. I read a few sadfics in my time, and only one of them actually got me to cry (I didn't hold back like I did with MLD), and that was "The Things We Leave Behind". That just dragged out the sadness, to the point that the length alone of what was said in memory of Twilight, as well as the content itself, would make anyone cry. I didn't cry a lot, just shed a few tears...manly tears. Edited November 15, 2012 by whoovesfan7698
Sorte95 46 November 15, 2012 Share November 15, 2012 Fanfics doesn't affect my view of Equestria very much. I'm perfectly able to keep fanon and canon separated. Also, I haven't read that many fanfics yet.
Alleviate 342 November 15, 2012 Share November 15, 2012 Ahh, one of my favourite things about the MLPFandom - the Fics. My views of Equestria and the characters are quite vastly changed by Fanfiction really. After several (most brilliant, my dude) Silent Ponyville fics, I can see there there may in fact be a darker side to the whole place. For example, now, when I see Pinkie gone Pinakamena, I think: 'Maybe she's got a serious problem,' Instead of, 'She's overacting massively, ain't she?' But they don't just make me think of things a little darker, they also give various characters much deeper backgrounds, explaining their actions and things much better. The best examples of this: Luna. From enough Fics (Adjusts glasses of superior knowledge From the show we see her having gone mad at the injustice and futility of her work if no-one is to witness it, from Fics, I can see several other motives, such as a cult obsessed with the ever-lasting night and rise of a Nightmare, the Nightmare himself (where ever that was from..) or something else. In other words, yes, they have affected my views, but mainly just made my character perceptions deeper... One thing, don't even get me started on the Shipping pairings I can now see in the show itself...Never while actually watching, just after...Too many ShipFics...Awesome, awesome ShipFics... Dusty Soul 2,612 November 16, 2012 Share November 16, 2012 I have two words... They don't. I've read multiple fan-fics, but I have no problem going from fanon to canon. The only one I started having problems with was the one "Not my Destiny." It was so realistic it could've been canon. Guest November 16, 2012 Share November 16, 2012 Fanfictions doesn't really affect the way I look at canon Equestria, but it might change how I speculate about things. Like if I speculated about Celestia,s and Luna's origin I would think back at a fanfic that explained that and use the fanfic as my headcanon. But no, it won't change canon Equestria. Clarity 3,094 November 16, 2012 Share November 16, 2012 (edited) Quite a lot, perhaps. Especially with sad fanfiction. My favorite ones are AJ's relationships with her deceased parents, which is a huge part of why I love her so much--it just seems really interesting to see her emotional struggling. Other than that, though, not really. Cupcakes is so unrealistic that I pretty much laughed. Rainbow Factory is better, but still made me roll my eyes a bit. Clopfics do not make me see ponies in the show as NSFW. Celestia isn't "Trollestia". Rainbow Dash and Scootaloo will never be surrogate sisters in my eyes no matter how much "Scootalove" I see. poniesforfun 716 November 16, 2012 Share November 16, 2012 Only if it's got a really epic plot I may wish it happened in the featurette Other than that most of the time I don't take fanfics seriously or canon especially when it comes to internet memes.
