This thread needs more Ihsahn. I think I prefer his solo work over his work with Emperor. Come to think about it, he's like the Swedish Devin Townsend in a way-both are musical geniuses and genuinely great guys.

Here's a track from his newest solo album, Eremita. Also, dat sax.

There's a tapping section around 2:21 of this song. It's one of the most evilest/creepiest sounding parts of a song I ever listened to. And its a pretty sweet solo nonetheless.

Showed a friend of mine this song, he hated it. I must show him something off of The New Black, I feel that Almost Again is a good intro to Devin Townsend/Strapping Young Lad.

Oh, Veil... I miss your small local shows. I still have their three song plastic sleeve EP.

Speaking of local, plugging my friends again. They just got a music video out. Let me know what you think?

Unless your friend likes speed and really frantic/insane death metal esque metal, Shitstorm is a bad introductory song. Being the SYL fanatic myself, I've summed up SYL's work.

  • Melodies and actual singing: The New Black (preferably Wrong Side or Almost Again, as you said)
  • Raw production and overall destructively powerful songs: Most (if not all) of Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing, select songs from Alien (Shine, Imperial, Thalamus, maybe even Possessions)
  • Variety of metal styles: Alien, The New Black, maybe City to an extent
  • Aggressive/Thrashy metal: Everything up to and including their Self-titled, select songs from Alien (Zen, We Ride, Shitstorm) and one song from The New Black - You Suck
  • Good representations of SYL: All Hail The New Flesh, Detox, In The Rainy Season, Wrong Side, Love?
  • If you're a pussy: The first four songs from Devy's Physicist (because its basically watered down SYL)
I can do one on Devy's work if you please.

He's a fan of melodic death metal(similar to me), however he does enjoy some death and thrash metal. He just found Shitstorm to be pointlessly angry, though I think he might like Almost Again.

Of course its gonna be pointlessly angry, the dude was unmedicated during the damn recording! XD

Shine, All Hail the New Flesh, Force Fed, Aftermath, and Almost Again. If I were you I'd personally just tell him to listen to City, but to each his own.

Technically, this is a ballad, but it does have elements of metal in the second half of the song. Shadows Fall is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

The Contortionisist still does deathcore best out of any deathcore I've heard.

I remember having very vivid ideas years ago about how the light that man wanted to shine across the universe has all but burned out. But truthfully, I suspect it's always been like this. Man just doesn't, and never will, have much light to shine to begin with. Yet still he builds his cities and empires, and ceaselessly seeks to gather more knowledge, perhaps in the delusion that he can make man's light burn a little brighter, desperate to find something of permanence, or perhaps something which might prove to him that mankind is a benefit to the Universe and to himself and that it is worth existing. But he will not.

Katatonia recommendations? They'll be playing with The Devin Townsend Project and I don't want to be there not knowing any songs.

Admittedly, I've heard only a few songs and saw one music video from them. They sound too depressive for my tastes...

SHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Are you TRYING to attract mods?!

Speaking of Devin Townsend: 'But I don't eat the cheeseburgers guys, I'm a vegi-ma-tarian!'

Stop ripping off Meshuggah, you self righteous wanker!

I've never been a particularly big fan of Cradle. But for some reason I like this track.

Submitted for your consideration:

I'm pretty cool. I think.

Also, new OC (it has a cutie mark this time!).

That's what got me into SYL <3~ I think it was the drummer that got me to like SYL in majority though, and devy's creativity kept me there. I remember hearing it for the first time thinking "Damn, he's got fucking fast feet..." but that was before I got deeper into more hard core stuff. ._."

What can I say, I like the sound of a heavy drum beat down.I have yet to find any super hardcore speed drummers though, I've been slacking as of late and haven't been searching ><. Any suggestions Metal thread?

For fast drummers, can't really go wrong with Slayer (pre-Divine Intervention) :P .

There's also Aspid, who has some pretty fast drums. Dirky Dirk's work on Plains of Oblivion is pretty heavy/fast too (this too). Maybe even

to an extent, but its mostly heavy, not super fast. The drummer for
is pretty fucking nuts, especially in their latest album
. Lastly, I'd recommend Kreator's latest album Phantom Antichrist. Ventor's drumming got upped like a MOTHERFUCKER. Christ its amazing! Sadly, Kreator's generic lyrics still fucking bore me.

Edit: How could I also forget?! Charlie Benante of Anthrax. That motherfucker is like a god send on the drums. Especially

and
. Hell, his live performances surpass Lombardo, as far as I'm concerned!

I got into SYL through City. First Devy I ever heard was Deconstruction, though, so when I heard Strapping for the first time, it MELTED MY SKULL.

Oh man, thanks NNL <3 Half I have listened to and do enjoy, but the other half I have yet to experience X3. I'll have to give them a listen through as I play some LFD/2 or some other killing spree game XP

Speaking of hardcore drummers, reminded me of Dance Club Massacre, but they're more Grindcore than Metalcore :x

And now, a genre I'd never heard of before Black Breath dropped their album "Sentenced to Life" this year: death 'n' roll.

Keep in mind, the genres are mainly Thrash, so they're gonna sound more fast and aggressive if anything. Hope that doesn't ruin the experience. =X

Today, I went around a few places and walked a shit ton while listening to Synchestra.

Edit: If it adds to the listening experience, racing games like SSX or something work well with the songs. Especially with Aspid. I fucking love Aspid so much.
