Manson has a long history of making some pretty kick-ass covers of decidedly un-metal songs (Eurythmics, Nightmare Before Christmas, etc.). His latest one is pretty sweet:

Can't figure out who the cheesiest metal band is. I think it's a toss up between Manowar and Hammerfall. Thoughts?

Honest opinion? I'd put my money on Hammerfall MANOWAR! How the hell do I make a mistake like that?!. Anyway, from what it seems, Hammerfall seems like a band that's more "Kill the Dragon!" or "Kill the Enemy" rather than "Die for Metal!", which is basically what Manowar is known for metal.

I was just thinking about those guys - 3IOB is fucking awesome, but even though they've got the lyrics and the music to be a sweet cheese band, they need to get a little more known first. When they reach Manowar level, my opinion will change.

I don't know. When I listen to Hammerfall, and given the fact which country they come from, nothing really strikes me as "Cheesy for Metal". From the few songs I've heard/you've linked, they're more "Cheesy for the epic story", or at least that's the vibe I get.

Because I honestly just saw someone arguing about My Chemical Romance and how some people feel they just now became mainstream and some people feel they still aren't...

I agree with you, they are cheesy, and their cheesiness through lyrics is great. But Manowar does the same thing, and given their track record, has managed to live and breathe heavy metal. I don't know, maybe it's because Manowar is the popular choice? I don't know, I just find them to be more... cheesy than others. The cheesiest of them all.

Tough question. Now I feel stupid because there was a class based on Mainstream Media that I can't remember. Anyway, if a media product is able to be picked up by the general society, integrated into the norm, and considered to be a favor it by the general public, I call it mainstream.

 

If a band goes from being an underground band to being recognized by the general public (as opposed to the niche market it was originally targeting), I'm not calling it mainstream. BUT, if its accepted by the general public and considered acceptable, then I call it mainstream.

 

Example: Metallica. Released Kill 'Em All, was for a niche target - metal heads. Continued on until AJFA/Black Album/Load/Reload (not quite sure when, just in between those four albums), where the songs started to become acceptable by the general public, therefore going from an underground band who played Thrash, to a band that played metal and became accepted and loved by the general public.

 

If there's any contradictions or mistakes, excuse me for them.

Less than 2 month's away from the new Wintersun album. I mean we've only been waiting 8 years for the album to get released. This video pretty much sums it up... and it was made almost 3 years ago.
