gaming Game Boy? What's that?

I never had the pleasure of owning a Classic Game Boy, my first was the Game Boy Advance, and my nostalgic first games were Sonic Advance and Super Mario World 2.

Though I'll never forget my first Pokémon game: Crystal Version. R.I.P for I have lost it within the void.

I honestly hated how narrow the SP was. I thought the Advance was perfect shape-wise, it just needed a backlight. There was the aftermarket Afterburner front-lit kit, but Nintendo shut them down hard.

If that's your GB Light, you can color me jealous. That just about the only GB I've never owned, stupid Nintendo and only releasing it in Japan. :okiedokielokie:

Yeah, it's mine. It pretty much was the first back-light handheld from Nintendo in 1997. The only beef I have with the SP (I have the front lit model that came out first) is that it didn't had a headphone input. You had to buy a little adapter that plugged in the charger port for headphones. Edited by Jamaican Jam

I don't really celebrate old machines. We always look for new ways to improve and make our gaming experience richer, so why settle for lesser hardware? That being said, the games themselves were fun and should get remade so that new generations can enjoy them on a more vibrant platform.

If anything, i can respect the GB because it made history with portable gaming.

That was funny I remember wanting to own a Game boy when I was a kid but didn't get one until the PSP came out I still wanted to own a gameboy so I bought a blue gameboy advance sp. But a bit later I got a PSP but still back then I honestly wanted a gameboy more. So kids these days, they don't know what they're missing.

My own Game Boy recently stopped working about a year ago, which was very disappointing. I've held onto it anyway, despite it no longer working. However, I also have a Nintendo 64, Pokémon Stadium and a Transfer Pak, so at least I still have a way to play Pokemon Yellow.

"I know this. It's an iphone case."

Yeah kid. That's an Iphone case. You're really gonna get that around your phone.

To be honest, most of these kids reactions are pretty standard. I mean when I was their age, I didn't know nothing about a gameboy, or whatever. I think the DS was coming out at that point and I didn't know what that was either. Considering most of these kids live in a world of ipads and xbones, this seems pretty obsolete. Why should a kid play a gameboy with limited gaming time, a small unenviable screen and pathetic hardware, when they can have games 10x a pretty, powerful and accessible on a phone?

Most of the reactions are from people who owned a gameboy, who had some of their fondest memories on one. These kids seem like idiots because it wasn't their nostalgia, and they would never even need to look up "what is a gameboy" because they probably don't care.

I don't think these kids are stupid, or irritating. I mean a lack of some common sense? maybe. But they don't know any better.

However, those teens reacting to doctor who, made me blow a fuse!

Well I was only one years old when the original game boy came out: but I remember seeing them around and I had a Game Boy colour.

Also yay for the kid who shares my name since not a lot of people do :)

I thought the video would make me feel old, but it just ended up making me feel...  Angry lol.  Some of those kids need a good hard slap across the face.  I will personally hunt down that one kid that said it wouldn't have any good games and NAME a good GameBoy game in between slaps.

*Slap.*  Metroid II: The Return of Samus.  *Slap* Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.  *Slap.* Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge...

And so on.

I remember my good old purple gameboy colour as well as that magnifying glass they showed off. It really is funny looking back at it, such a clunky attachment! I never really used it because it wasn't portable at all and you still needed to sit on the surface of the sun to see the screen.

The love for touch controls startles me a bit, I'd much rather have buttons because they're tactile and responsive. If I were playing a mario game, I predict I'd be yelling "I PUSHED JUMP!" controlling Mario via touch screen rather than physical buttons. I still have all my old gameboy games and a refurbished GBA-SP (backlit model) to play them on.

Oh my God this video makes me want to weep for this generation.... Why do none of the kids in this video understand retro appeal?

I would jump for joy if anyone in my family gave me this for my birthday, or any old console for that matter. The guys/gals in the video seem to run off of the logic "It's old, therefore it's bad," when in fact I guarantee that if you locked me in a room with a PSP, a DS and a Game Boy, I would have the most fun with the Game Boy despite its graphics.

Admittedly, all of this is subjective, but the lack of respect on the part of some of these people for the progenitors of their current generation of gaming is staggering. It seems to me to hint at a level of superficiality; they seem more interested in flashy explosions than the game itself.

You know the main thing that bugs me about this video?

It's not so much the fact that the kids talked smack about the game boy but the fact that they had a shoddy introduction to it.

This was wonderful opportunity to show a younger generation what handheld gaming was like back in the day, to show them that this was a great system that can still be fun to this day. The Game Boy had a huge library full of great games like Super Mario Land 2: The 6 Golden Coins, Wario Land I and II, Kirby's Dreamland, Castlevania II Belmont's Revenge, The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening, Donkey Kong Land, Metroid II, Pokemon Red and Blue and Final Fantasy Adventure and out of all the games they could have picked THEY PICK FRIGGEN TETRIS!?!?!?!?

Too all the posters who are saying stuff like "kids these days", what do you think adults in the late '80s and early '90s were thinking? The same thing! They were ranting about the same thing but saying things like we had Pong. If you were back when in the ages from the video, you'll probably react the same way because you most likely don't have any nostalgia about Pong.

One of the kids dismissed it for having buttons instead of touchscreen crap?

In my response, in short is: "No."

But if you want my long answer, it's: "Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo."

EDIT: Rant time!

The reason why I think anything with a touchscreen is horrible is because THERE IS NO TACTILE FEEDBACK OR RESPONSIVENESS. Instead it feels like you're holding a piece of glass and pushing your fingers against it. The reason why they made the buttons jump out out the controller/handheld is because you can feel them. And when you press them, it feels like it pushes back at you (I could even prove it with science: 3rd law of motion.) If I can't feel the response at the same time see it, then it's pretty much pointless.

What's even worse is the fact I hear these things are taking over consoles and desktops. So that means the future is Candy (cancer, crap, other bad things that start with a "c") Crush and a bunch of clones following it in adventures of microtransactions in order to play the game.

That's enough rage for today.

Answer me this: why does a kid need to know what a Game Boy is? We have better technology and games now; of course a kid wouldn't know or care about the Game Boy. It's outdated and borderline useless, since you can play the best games on it through other means (e.g. the 3DS vitrual console).

They want to play shitty pay-2-win iPad games over games where you get the whole experience from the get-go?!

That's the thing about those "X Reacts to X" videos, they always give the worst possible representations! Just look at "Teens React to My Little Pony". You can't judge a show from it's intro damnit!

I have every generation of Game Boy that has come out...I grew up with the advent of Pokemon and the Game Boy Color personally (I have every Pokemon game for the handheld systems released in the USA as well).

And personally, if you really look at what today's kids are exposed to, I have little hope for them in carrying on yesterday's lessons from history's mistakes and innovations. Why do I say this? Because the Kid's React video is just showing the icing on the cake. I am blacksmith and lover of old world technologies. I swear, there are so many people my age and younger that would have an existential crisis if the electrical grid was shut down. They just cannot fathom life without technology. It's the sad truth, and I find it even sadder that I, at age 23, can see it all around me. Maybe I'm just looking from the outside in, but honestly, although technology is amazing, I see it very much dumbing down the populous, taking away "privacy" and "freedom," taking away true self-sustenance, and overall making everyone dependant on technology.

OMG...nostalgia. I remember playing my friend's Gameboy all the time. And then that day finally came, when my parents surprised me with a Gameboy Advance SP.

"Kid's these days. Back in my day..."

Oh, how this makes me feel old. I still have my old Gameboy color kicking around somewhere and the fact that some of them have never played or even heard of Tetris astounds me. I'm not even kidding, the one kid who seemed incredulous that it "doesn't have pre-loaded apps or a touch screen" makes me legitimately angry.

100% agree! Touchscreen is terrible for buttons. I couldn't even play games properly on my phone.

Undoubtedly they could have shown any game to them and it would have had different reactions but Tetris on GB was one of the best selling games of it's time. People loved it.

Well of course. People are always going to be that way to new generations. We see that the stuff they have is different from the stuff we had and we think about how the foundations we were built on is going to make our experience far different from theirs. Sometimes in a bad way as with the kid who was thinking that pressing buttons instead of the screen, as opposed to being just an alternative, was some kind of bad thing.

Answer me this: why does a kid need to know what a Game Boy is? We have better technology and games now; of course a kid wouldn't know or care about the Game Boy. It's outdated and borderline useless, since you can play the best games on it through other means (e.g. the 3DS vitrual console).

It's not so much that they need to know it that it's funny and strange to see them react to them in such a way thanks to the advancements in technology. Plus as someone else said, even if they don't have to have it a lot of them don't get how this one console influenced all the games they have now.

I don't think they need to know or love it or anything but most of them are comparing it to today's technology as opposed to understanding that it's older. That's funny as well as infuriating.

But I'm sure that's the entire point of these videos.

I'm feeling pretty enraged by that now. Don't even know what a gameboy is for god sake. Not even the one that came out the year the ds came out. What is the world coming to?
