Red Rivers in China

So, I was going to check my emails a few minutes ago & discovered that apparently China's having an... Interesting problem;

Here is a quote from the article;

"Residents in Zhejiang province said the river looked normal at 5 a.m. Beijing time on Thursday morning. Within an hour, the entire river turned crimson. Residents also said a strange smell wafted through the air."

I figured I'd just see what other people have to say about this, anyone has any theories or what not. There is one thing I am going to get out of the way; I am not trying to spark any religious fights about the apocalypse. I know a lot of people are going to instantly think about this, but if you want to turn this into a religious debate please take it to a debate thread. This is just to hear what others think about this, see if anyone has an ideas on what is going on that don't include the end of days. No, I am not saying that just because I am an atheist, I just don't want to start a huge fight over something that most likely has a reasonable explanation & starting a fight would only cause panic, for which there is no need. Things like this have happened before, doesn't mean we should all start begging forgiveness from God.

 

If any mods/admins see this & want to put this in the debate section, I don't mind. I just felt this could be discussed without too much excitement so I wanted to keep it in General Discussions. Sorry for the inconvenience if you do decide to move it.

Its not blood just toxic goop from one of those factories im sure we are fine.

Something that is not really uncommon. Toxic algae that turn the water red. Some even assume that a natural phenomenon like this is the root for the legend of the sea turning to blood in the old testament.

Was going to reply to this but I got distracted for a moment lol... The article mentions several different factories, one of which rings in my head as a quite big warning light. That one being a clothe dying facility. If that doesn't have a hand in this, I don't know what does

This is happening in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, which is where I come from (I live in London, UK now). I believe this phenomenon is caused by factory pollution, as there are many factories in the Wenzhou.

 

Edit: it turns out that this is in a more rural area of Wenzhou (grandfather was born in the area) where factories are scarce. It may be dyes or red pollutants as this has happened to other rivers in the past few years, including the Yangtze river.
