Why does everyone have to swear all the time?

Well, it's fun.  That seems reason enough to do it.  And as long as it's not hostile, or insensitive, it's also harmless.  That seems reason enough to dismiss concerns not to do it.

I think that people ca be a bit more creative when it comes to cursing.

A lot of it I think is that it was labelled as "cool" or "rebel" in primary school & High school then it might have stuck with them.

Alternatively, I think it has more to do with the kind of people you're around. I think if your parens swear a lot, there's a good chance that the children might too. Though it's not to say it's entirely the individual's choice.

I try not to swear and I honestly don't enjoy hearing others use swear words just for the sake of it. They have their place for emphasis I guess, and of course when you're wrenching on something and it slips off causing you to skin your knuckles on a rusty piece of metal that's covered in 30 years of grime on the underside of a vehicle. But I really don't want to hear it in normal day to day chitchat. They should be used sparingly, otherwise they come across out of place, overused, and without as much emphasis as they would if used correctly. I could give a very good example of this, showing how one sentence with many swear words in it would just come across laughable if you said it to me compared to one where its just used for emphasis... But what's the point since I'd just be writing bleeps.

The stupid little punk that lives next door to me always has his idiot friends over, and what comes from their mouths as they walk down the street makes a Navy vessel clean by comparison. My sis and I just sit inside and laugh at them, shouting out the windows that they should grow up because cursing doesn't make ya look cool.

Honestly swearing is a better way to express honesty. It shows you have some form of emotion. It maybe bad to say it excessively but It's not entirely bad. Besides most of society says it, so the big deal here is nothing more than a triviality. An argument which is really pointless, but will still be brought up still. It's whatever though, just putting my two cents in.

I don't swear all the time. I noticed i tend to filter finer parts of my vocabulary depending on which company i find myself among. I'm not offended by swearing, i don't think anyone else should be either - but i try to consider others, so there.

Getting Mad at someone is one example of the release of the energy of anger. Swearing works almost the same way as your mind considers it a method to get rid of extra energy whether its positive or negative. People don't just swear when they get charged with bad emotions but they also swear to express happiness and excitement.

I myself swear and i guess its just something im used to now.

That is a good way to look at it. Like I said before, you're the most honest when you swear. It's a rather true statement.

People love their cuss words, man. I personally don't type out cuss words most of the time, but I do swear a lot in person.

As for when people are swearing at me... that's just funny to me and makes it easier to argue back. That's just how I see it, though.

I for one never swear unless like...my house exploded...and then exploded again.

Why others swear? I dunno. Most of them are just mad a lot or they're perverts.

Because it feels fuckin' good man!

More seriously, swears have a very important position in our language. In fact, studies suggest they are processed in different parts of the brain. This is because their tabooness gives them a unique position. If I wanted to convey how bad of a situation I was in, I could say I was in a terrible situation, however if I really wanted to convey it, I could say that I was in deep shit. The latter, while more vulgar, more accurately describes extreme situations. They also serve a few other purposes - they can be used to suggest a casual atmosphere, and most important of all they can signal or even relieve pain. Because of how taboo they are, they're excellent at showing the severity of the situation, as they otherwise would not be used.

So yeah, anyone who says curses are pointless are just being snooty.

I feel the exactly the same way that you do @Alicorn Fluttershy. Like it says in that verse in your signature, all it is is corrupting speech, and we should instead be building others up with our speech.

Although I must confess that I may have let out a mild swear on occasion, but I never direct them toward others.

I personally don't mind swearing at all. In fact, I swear a lot when I'm angry and what not. Even when I'm not angry, I swear a good deal. I don't know if it's because of a natural gag reflex or something, but I always swear when I don't mean to.

I've never really thought about it. In Ireland, everyone swears. It's the norm. I can't even say it's for emphasis, because we use them in almost every sentence xD

It's considered weird and less important if you don't swear.

Plenty of people I know even use the "f-word" when trying to think of something, sintead of "Err" or "umm".

Swear words can be, as Kirk and Spock put it, "colorful metaphors."  In the proper context and with the proper audience, and at the proper time and in suitable conversations, they can add zest, feeling, humor (even "clean" humor), and cheerfulness so one's statements. I don't need them, however. I think I've proved in my writing around here both casually and in formal forum announcements that I have a firm enough grasp on the English language to convey depth of feeling without profanity, but sometimes I feel like taking it easy and letting my thoughts flow freely and unfiltered, within reason.

When overused or spoken out of place, they can do just as much harm. Know your audience. Just as you don't go to a funeral or a wedding (hopefully) wearing your pajamas, you shouldn't sling profanity in the presence of people who find it distasteful for any reason. You may not find it offensive and that's cool, I don't either, but friendship involves drawing boundaries. I am friends with very disparate people who reflect different parts of my character and personality, and manage to get along with each of them because I know what each finds acceptable and unacceptable, and respect their wishes. It's no inconvenience to you if another person wishes you to refrain from such language, so have the courtesy to honor that.

I think people swear just to get their point across. I do swear in real life but I don't do it as much on the forums since I try to appear more formal yet humorous. I'm OK with people swearing if they need to get their point across. It let's them show their true feeling for something. However, what I don't like is when people use it every other word like it's a regular part of their vocabulary. To me, it sounds like their talking filth just for the heck of it. I might be more casual about it outside the forums but here, I really feel I have no need to swear.

I just have a really nasty habit of using swear words all the time, just real casually.

It's a work in progress, I'm trying to stop. I find it rather...uncouth as Rarity would put it.

Today so far has been a bust. I was playing Call of Duty and yeah...2 seconds into a game I already started cussing up a storm :maud:
