Book Appreciation Thread

Searched for this; didn't see it.

I'd like to talk about books for a moment.  And I'm talking about books--paper pages bound together.  Not eReaders.  Although I'm certainly not opposed to eReaders in and of themselves, I am opposed to the idea that they could make actual books extinct.

I love books.  I love the feel.  I love the smell.  Each of my favorite books has a distict smell.  Dune, Black Jewels Trilogy, the Halo series, The Diablo Archive, even my video game player's guides.  I can identify all of my player's guides by smell alone.  In particular, Final Fantasy XII, XIII, and Skyrim.  As you know, smell is linked to memory more than any other sense.  One whiff of any of those guides, and it takes me back to the first time I ever played those games.  So many memories.  The smell and the touch are such personal and important aspects to books that affect the whole experience.  As Captain Jean-Luc Picard said, "For humans, touch can connect you to an object in a very personal way.  Make it seem more real."  That's what books do for me.  One of life's great pleasures is to curl up on the couch late at night with a big blanket and a great novel.  Digital books just can't compare for that experience.

This isn't intended to be a paper vs. digital debate thread.  I just wanted to talk about books and why they're great.  Share what you love about books.

I love books because I can buy a bunch of classics and stack them up next to my CD and DVD collection. On the off chance anyone ever comes into my room, they'll leave thinking I'm about 20% cooler B)

But yeah, I like the feel and just the presence books have. Hard to explain, but having a good book on me makes me feel a little more....complete :D

I have a fairly large library of medieval combat manuals (with modern guidelines and translations) that accompany my collection of leather bound classics like The Divine Comedey.

I can honestly say that I'm not too keen on books and I hate reading.

BUT.. The Ender's Game series by Orson Scott Card. I don't know what it is but I loved it.

For me, a book has to be relatively short or grab my interest in some way for me to read it.

Sometimes I'll read a funny little collection of short stories too.

I love the feel of something physical in my hands (don't take this out of context), so yeah. I like books. Sometimes when i want to read a book i was recommended to i go through the trouble of actually purchasing it instead of reading a .pdf or something.

I am pretty "traditional" here, because I don't use any eReaders or something like that at all. Paper book is something irreplaceable for me. I even noticed, that it's much easier for me to remember informations or contents I've read in a book comparing to the internet or .pdf.

I love the smell.

Yes, I love the smell of books too, especially the older ones.
