I'm Gonna Try Writing My First Fanfic. Which Concept Should I Start With?

I have quite a few ideas for fanfiction, but which would be the best to execute as a starter fic for someone who hasn't written stories over two thousand words before?

 

The ideas I have for stories are as follows:

 

 

-Twilight hits a growth spurt and starts to get a body more like the other princesses, something she, her friends and the rest of ponyville are struggling to used too.

 

-Rather than going back to the princesses at the end of season 4, the alicorn magic stays with Twilight and she must learn how to deal with being the most powerful creature in the world. 

 

-Twilight learns to her shock how princess Celestia is immortal: She isn't, after realizing that her own mane, coat and eye colors are starting to change into those of the Princess. 

 

-A misfired spell gives AppleJack mind reading powers. 

 

-Twilight discovers that AppleJack is vastly more intelligent than she lets on, and that she is actually the descendant of Equstria's brightest minds. 

 

-Rarity supports her boutique by secretly partaking in underground fight clubs.

 

-FlutterShy was actually a stallion the entire time, just no pony seemed to notice.

 

- Earth and Equestria make contact, but after learning the abilities of the ponies, the U.S. attempts to force Equestria to accept bases on it's home soil in order to defend humanity. When they decline, the president sees it as provocation and sends an invasion force to Equestria, putting the entire US military on alert. What no one counted on was Equestria retaliating, not with it's own soldiers, but with the princesses themselves.

 

-Earth/Equestria have made contact but humans cannot travel to Equestria without dying. But years of genetic testing have found someone who is immune to magic and who could serve as earth's ambassador. Problem is that she's a heavy metal frontwoman who partakes in underground fight clubs, draws adult graphic novels, and is under investigation for arson, riot instigation, theft of police property, piracy & prostitution to name a few.

 

-Making of MLP and a look at the lives of the cast ponies who play the mane six.

 

-A re-imagination of Generation 3 and the stories it produced, with depth, complexity and some humorous quirks added to it's characters and plot lines. 

 

-A crossover fic where the cast of MLP battle the Pro wrestlers of ECW

 

-Similar to the one above, where the CMC meet WWE's most elite tag team trio, The Shield. 

 

- Twilight finds an Alicorn in the everfree forest, one who knows everything about her, her friends, and the whole world, but remembers nothing about herself, an alicorn w/ a white coat, a long red mane and an ink brush cutie mark...

 

-Ponies keep saying that Octavia & Vinyl scratch would make a cute couple, but little do they know that the two ponies are actually one in the same. 

 

-A Conversion Bureau story where a multi-billionaire celebrity announces that she's  going to become a pony, much to the shock of her adoring public and the mass media as a whole. 

 

-Another TCB story, where a teen tries to avoid getting drafted during the latest conflict by being a test subject for a new conversion serum and escaping to Equestria.

 

 

Which of these concepts do you guys think would be best for someone who is starting out in fanfiction?

I have written one fan fic it took me a over a year to write and it is a great one probably my best work of art I have ever written including School projects here is my advice follow your own instinct and come up with the entire plot in your mind before writing it out once you have thought of a solid plot or wrote one then that's when you write your fan fic for my fan fic I came up with the idea in May of 2013 I brainstormed on it so long I didn't write it until September of 2013 and I didn't finish it until a few weeks after my 17th birthday on July of 2014

 

well I just noticed the question at the end what concept you should write what ever is your strong suit my strong suit is Sad Fics what ever you think you will do best on is what you should write

I don't believe that are concepts. you can write almost of everything. the only thing you really need is inspiration. I speak from my personal experience.

one day I had a dream of a romantic story, then, i wrote it ( I have not finished the story yet)

think in your favourites books, references... or what is easier for you to write ( my stronger suit are the romantic stories)

 

the idea of Rarity supports her boutique by secretly partaking in underground fight clubs is interesting for me, I would give it a try to your fanfic if you write about that... but anyway... dont try to compare your style of written with others. this is, in last term, almost fatal cause you are gonna start to think " i´m doing the wrong thing" or " my fanfic is not quite good as others".

 

the only recipe for make a successful fanfic is the inspiration and the dedication that you can put on it

Applejack, the element of honesty, being able to read minds and would speak her own if it gets too much. Very interesting, and I’d like to see some comedic elements.

Cutie Mark Crusader Wrestlers... *snorts*. It kinda feels like one your Make-A-Wish foundation moments. I’m a wrestling fan myself, particularly on the comedy element. I don’t suppose you heard of wrestlers like Kikutaro, Delirious, and Colt Cabana? Maybe you can get ideas from their matches?

I can see it. Rarity taking part in those fights... and then no one wants to fight her because of her ferocity... or her whining. We have all seen those. lolz

Truth to be told, I’m a Twilight Sparkle fan because of her smarts and personalities. I like those ideas as serious fanfics. It’s just a question of, which one would work the best. I'd say you can go for either the appearance changing story or the immortality issue story.

 

Finalizing, I like those ideas a lot. If you want to go for something for more MLP-like, I'd say go for the mind-reading Applejack or the brawling Rarity first, maybe as a one-shot. CMCW would be a fun fic to write in your spare time.

I like most of these ideas. I don't think you should be forced to start with a specific concept over another one; just choose the one you feel more comfortable writing about and go with it. The Fausticorn one is very interesting, though.

I've just thought of some more ideas if you guys are interested. 

 

• A Brony gets trapped in his Equestria girls doll and has to figure out how to survive in his own home as a 12 in. humanized horse figurine.
  
• Three friends wake up in the world of Rainbow Rocks, as the Dazzlings, at the restaurant where the movie starts, and must convincingly play the part of power hungry seductresses from start to credits in order to escape.
  
• Applejack is secretly a metal head, and meets other unlikely metal fans in Cadence, Octavia, Colgate, Twist, Silver Spoon and others, where they all form their own secret society of headbangers, and conspire a terrorist ploy to rid Equestria of it's month long broadcast of seasonal holiday music across the nation.
  
• Days after the Battle With Tirek, Twilight is noticing that she isn't feeling hungry or thirsty anymore and that her fiends are saying her body feels awfully cold.  Eventually she wakes up to find her eyes nearly clouded over, that she has a low body temperature, that she isn't bleeding for any of her blood & tissue samples, and worst of all  finds on the Electrocardiogram of her own heart, a flat line and a single unending sound. Princess Twilight Sparkle, is clinically dead.  Can she keep her C.O.D. a secret from her friends, family and fellow princesses long enough for her to play coroner & conduct her own self autopsy to figure it out herself?
  
• Twilight Sparkle is smarter and more powerful than any pony in Equestria. But it's because she's Equestria's first ever artificially intelligent pony robot, and the mane six are just researchers playing the part of friends to study Twi's function and behavior, and to fix her whenever she breaks down, all the while keeping the project a secret from the rest of Equestria, and Twily bot herself.
  
• The remane 5 notice that once a month for 3 nights, Rarity goes off into the edge of the everfree, each during a full moon. When they follow her, they see her transform and morph into a tall, hairless, bipedal creature, one that Twi has seen on the other side of the mirror.
  
• The Rainbooms go on tour as the opening act for Black Label Society, Type O Negative and Pantera. Shenanigans ensue.
  
• A filmmaker looking to show flaws of the standard school system arrives at Canterlot High, only to see some strange things going on, and a girl and her dog go in and out of a solid stone statue.
  
• Rainbow Rocks: Metal Magic. With the success of the Battle of the Bands, the contest is renewed and expanded to include all the nearby schools, and a new 6 piece act from Everfree High is cranking up the noise louder than the other acts, with the side effect of the audience members  getting  a lot more "friendlier" with one another, and as Sunset notices, some familiar ruby red shards as part of their set.
  
• Equestria and Earth have made contact, but for some reason, humans cannot cross into the ponies realm. But a brilliant scientist and her team have found a way to get a peak in: by building a pony robot, sending it into Equestria, controlling it from Earth with an advanced simulation suit & neural software, pretending to interact w/ Equestia's citizens and assimilate into Equestrian society. Little did our researcher know how close friends the denizens of Ponyville would become with her and her steel horse facade, or that she would earn the affections of one royal bookworm.
  
• A mirror verse story of the Power Ponies comic, where a crime syndicate of super criminals called "The Six" have taken over every gang and crime family and are waging war to isolate the city, leaving civilian militia and police in a battle to keep Maretropolis free.  Caught in the crossfire, Serum Sheen, the brilliant owner of a mom & pop mane care factory is knocked into her own chemical vat and electrocuted. She comes out not only surviving, but finding that she, and more specifically her mane,  have been endowed with freakish size, strength, durability and elasticity.  She now struggles with a choice: to hide from the world and work to find a cure so she can rebuild her business and resume a normal relationship with her marefriend in the police force, or muster up the courage to be the hero her city needs. To become, the Phenomenal Maneia!
  
• The Citizens of Ponyville find the burnt out remains of Trixie's cart in a river, and can only assume the worst has happened to their on again, off again dictator.  While visiting Canterlot days after hosting an impromptu funeral, Twilight notices a new mare working at the Canterlot theater, one that seems to be intentionally avoiding her and her friends.
  
• Granny Smith has been keeping a secret. Her senility is just an act, and her weathered appearance is just a disguise. She is actually immortal and is still the same mare as seen in the pictures of Ponyvilles founding.
  
• A spell in Canterlot has backfired and all the colts and stallions of Equestria are now fillies & mares. How will our orchard work horse, Captain of the royal guard/ Prince(ss) of the crystal empire, and even resident Draqoniquis and all those who know and love them handle the situation?
  
• The Case of Blossomforth vs. The Moderators and Owners of Fimfiction.net. Blossomforth has plenty of stories about her, but no actual tag to help readers find her in said stories. Whose fault is that? The staff at FF of course, and she's going to take them to court over it (will be a bit tricky since I can't use any of the staff by name)
  
• The female Pegasus mating ritual: A spinoff on the male Pegasus mating ritual story. Twi wonders how female Pegasus attract mates, and on a visit to Cloudsdale, Rainbow Dash is more than willing to demonstrate for the benefit of the princess with the help of a volunteer (that'll be decided by the readers). Although what the princess sees maybe a bit more erotic, and violent, than she anticipated.
  
• A series of stories where*Insert Pony Here* shops in a grocery store. And I'm the only one who notices.
  
• Princess Molestia & Gamer Luna are fired by Hasbro and replaced by actors, and now have to manage life without FiM while their friends awkwardly try to maintain their relationships off show.
  
• Who is Janey Appleseed? A wealthy member of the Apple family passes on, and it is being determined who of the Apple family will get a share of the estate, all the while many of the Apple kin are wondering who this Janey Appleseed is and where she came from.
  
• While starting the annual Equestrian census, Celestia is reminded about the children she had over a thousand years ago and the children they've had, and the children they went on to have. In a monumental genealogy project, Celestia deploys her resources to find out who her descendants are. The results may surprise her and a lot of other ponies in Equestria.
  
• Equestria turns out to be the final resting place of heavy metal's elite. Join Wayne Static,  Jeff Hanneman, Randy Rhoads, Cliff Burton, Dimebag Darrel, Ronnie James Dio and many others as they interact with the creatures and crazyness of Equestria while coping with passing on and keeping heaven/Equestria heavy.
  
• While her Fancy Pantsis away, Fleur de Lis films herself being fancy, while performing crazy stunts.
  
• The players of Legends of Equestria find themselves sucked into the game as their own OCs. Can the balance fun with trying to escape before the 3 day beta shuts down? (Yeah I know, Sword Art did it first.)
  
• Another LoE fic (possibly a sequel to the aforementioned), players of LoE find their OCs falling out of the skies right into their arms, laps & heads,as living, breathing thinking & feeling ponies, with one player in particular meeting his OC, whom he managed to glitch into being an Alicorn.
  
• It's time to harvest Sweet Apple acres and Big Mac has injured himself again. AppleJack takes it upon herself to do what she couldn't before and complete the harvest all on her own. But when her friends offer to help like last time, AppleJack rejects their help. It doesn't stop her friends continue to offer, insist and borderline demand AJ take their help, nor does it prevent them from trying to stop AJ from hurting herself, not realizing AJ is doing this to get back something she lost the first time she failed the solo harvest: Her pride, and she might just be willing to go though her friends to get it back, or die trying. 
  
• A unicorn disguised in facepaint and provocative gothic attire wows the audiences of ponyville with shows of macabre magic, getting the attention of Twilight and Trixie, who work together to seek the identity of this mare out of professional jealousy and morbid curiosity.  
  
• A documentary on Vinyl Scratch & Octavia, only with a very different take on the two, with Vinyl being the stereotypical rich & famous English music celeb snob, who wanders around her estate in fancy clothes while getting drunk & high and Octavia being a laid back surfer/stoner stereotype who makes complex works of musical art for the sole reason of "because it sounds cool". 
  

 

 

Also I have a bunch of Pony Parody ideas, which involve ponified parodies of movies like Twister, The Day After Tomorrow, Wizard of Oz/Oz the Great and Powerful, Now You See Me  and many others.

 

I'm torn between reading stories here on Fimfiction (I've got about 498 on my read later list alone) or actually writing a story myself.

Doesn't quite sound like her---the whole point of the episode was for AJ to set her pride aside, and she learned her lesson from it.  I like to think that character development usually does a good job sticking in that show.

 

TBH, I think different people have different methods for writing a good story.  I've only written one so far, and the way that one started for me was one scene in my head, then context for that scene, then things built on themselves in my head until I had a narrative with funny moments, pacing of action and dialog, and a conclusion.

 

If I were you and trying to decide which one of these to pick, I'd ask "How do I want this to end?  Where do I want this story to go to arrive at that ending?  What do I want to show during this narrative?"  If I could get promising answers to these questions while looking at one of your premise suggestions, it'd be a good sign.
