Discovery Taking Control over The Hub

Ah company politics. So nessesary but terrifying to fans of their favorite shows. A moment of silence for other great shows that fell from grace... like my beloved teen titans

I seen that and a part of me died. I haven't watched any but the very first episode of GO! so I could be insnae... but I don't think so. I hope that doesn't happen to MLP, I've been a fan for like three months now :(

Cheria (right) is a small town girl who was afflicted with a terrible sickness when she was very young. Meeting Sophie changed that however. She recovered almost instantly from her illness due to Sophie's magic and gained an undeniable talent with her own, and what does she do with this magic? She acts as a healer for her small town and helps the militia keep the hostile border safe. Seven years later, she's started a nation-wide relief organization after her adventure with Sophie and Friends, a great connection to the element of generosity.

I'm not calling Defcon 5 over this just yet. No point in freaking out until more information is released about Hasbro's intentions for the franchise. I for one have faith that they would not want to mess with a good thing while it is generating them as much revenue as it is.

Actually defcon 5 is peace.  Defcon 1 is war.  And yes, this might be a negative for new episodes vs coasting in future years but that is yet to be seen.  Season 5 will be on the hub(whatever) and Season 6 is very likely mostly written at this point.

I doubt it'll affect FiM itself, unless the show's popularity starts to severely decline.

Also, just to clear the air, this would not spell an instant cancellation for FiM if they decided not to air it on the channel anymore.  If nothing else, it would just move to another channel.  This deal is for the station, not the shows that are on it now.  Hasbro isn't going to sell its intellectual properties while they're still making money off them.  They aren't any more likely to sell MLP than they are to sell Transformers or GI Joe (I know they own more than just that, but those are considered to be the 'Big Three').

This kind of thing happens all the time with networks.  Often times, shows don't stay on the network afterward, but they don't typically get outright cancelled or tossed aside unless they're either not doing well to begin with, or new management of the company that owns said franchises just doesn't like them, or only wants the names (I'm looking at ABC and Filmation here...).  But even then, it's rare.

So in other words, don't worry unless there's something to worry about.

Now if Discovery buys Hasbro ITSELF, then we can start worrying.

I don't think it'll affect the show either. The channel's merely being re-named and re-branded. Happens to channels all the time and their content never really changes.

But this is Discovery we're talking about though, a company who lanches networks back to back within 1-2 years of eachother, barley gives them enough time to gain momentum, and then scraps them almost immediately after they start picking up steam. They do this BS all the time, The channel that's currently Destination America went though almost 3 relaunches so far. The Hub probably would've lasted longer if Discovery's management wasn't so scattered and incompetent.

So no more Hub but Discovery Family? Aaaah! My dream of seeing The Hub Latin America is officially ruined! :(

Yeah, I was hoping to eventually see The Hub in our region, but alas, that won't happen. It's weird that The Hub has been around for FOUR YEARS in the US, and here in Latinamerica IS STILL DISCOVERY KIDS. Well, it's not as weird as having Nickelodeon transmitting Littlest Pet Shop, YES, THE SAME CHANNEL YOU DREAD TRANSMITTING PONIES IS TRANSMITTING LPS IN LATINAMERICA

The Hub was a great network. It's only been around for 4 years. It's sad to see it go. And they're changing it back to a network with the name Discovery in it.

But does this mean MLP will move to another network or will it not air as much?

I don't expect MLP moving to another network at the moment, as Hasbro still transmit from morning to 3 pm. The worst it could happen is removing two episodes of MLP from it, since aside from the 3 episodes it showed at said period, it transmitted 2 additional ones at dusk

Humm, Discovery Family. That sounds vaugely like FOXFamily I mean ABCFamily. I guess it would give them an outlet to show more live action stuff. It would be cool if they pic up Power Rangers cuz PR is getting behind it's original Japanese counterpart Super Sentai, all cuz Nick wants them to split one season into 2. Heck they had to skip remaking a season (GoBusters) into PR and go on to last year's one (Kyoryuger) which will be remade into Power Rangers Dino Charge. But alas PR will never land on the Hub, for Ban Dai and Hasbro are ennimies.

Don't forget Disney Junior transmitting Strawberry Shortcake and the Care Bears.

Now, I'm not really surprised about that delay, TLC is almost as old as Discovery Channel and we didn't get the latin version until three years ago.

In all honesty, I hope "Discovery Family" is just a placeholder name for the network. They really need to come up with a stronger brand to stand up against the Nick/Disney/CN juggernaut.

It does call to mind the ABC Family channel, which brings to mind this quote from the WSJ article:

Mr. Warren said there was "white space" in the media landscape for this target audience, adding that Disney's ABC Family is "a wonderful channel, but it's really for young teenage girls."

I don't agree with the "wonderful channel" part, more like it "once had a semblance of wonderful" (back when it was FOX Family, I only watched it for Shining Time Station and the Casper movies, they also had great and memorable branding with their bumpers, purple and green color scheme, and "You Belong" song and slogan).

I only tune into ABC Family at Christmastime, the only time they ever live up to their name and original target demo, but even their Christmas block has been wearing thin on me for all the non-Christmas or loosely Christmas-related programming they've been shoving in.

Despite the cutthroat competition in the market, he is correct, there could possibly be space for a market that's currently dominated by only three operations. If only the cards are played right and not the way the Hub did it by relying on reruns, imports, and big name franchises.

At the end of the day, when you're dealing with a network run by a toy company, advertising is hell and "moichendising" becomes the name of the game!

Somehow, you've gotta peddle those flamethrowers!

But this is Discovery we're talking about though, a company who lanches networks back to back within 1-2 years of eachother, barley gives them enough time to gain momentum, and then scraps them almost immediately after they start picking up steam. The Hub probably would've lasted longer if Discovery's management wasn't so scattered and incompetent.

This is true, the article even points it out as having been such a huge part of their strategy lately:

Hub's rebranding is the latest example of Discovery's efforts to overhaul underperforming channels. In the past, it has turned Discovery Health into OWN: the Oprah Winfrey Network; HD Theater into Velocity, which is aimed at men who enjoy life in the fast lane; Planet Green into Destination America, a channel that, among other things, celebrates fast food and quirky jobs.

Dear Princess Celestia,

You know what I learned from all of this? Cable sucks, the Internet owns. B)

At first, I thought the whole Cartoon Network thing was just a rumor, but now it actually seems that Hasbro is actually shopping to them according to the article...

While some fans may find the prospect of the Mane 6 sharing channel space with Finn and Jake exciting, this would worry me greatly especially after the Young Justice fiasco: http://io9.com/paul-dini-superhero-cartoon-execs-dont-want-largely-f-1483758317

Don't worry, Cartoon Network got a new CEO recently who hopefully isn't as stupid. Oh. and the CEO is a woman so she wouldn't be sexist against herself.

Now if it went on there and replaced Johnny Test or Teen Tians GO however.

Keep in mind, Cartoon Network recently got a new CEO, a female one at that, so this could mean good news.

Cancelling young Justice wasn't sexist they also cancelled Green lantern both shows weren't selling toys. If anything it was unfair to green lantern because they did even give it a toy line

According to the article, they're going to retain control between 9AM and 3PM which includes the current air time for MLP. For this season? Maybe advertising will be different, but it will be on "Discovery Family". AFTER this season who knows. It's a change in business partnership, and that's not always a permanent thing. After all if it was, his change wouldn't happen in the first place. Will they stay or go? Will it affect MLP? Let's hope for the best.

Honestly when you think about it, this change somewhat makes sense. How much programming does Hasbro have beyond their cartoons and movies related to things like Transformers? If it was 50/50, that would mean essentially 12 hours for Hasbro and 12 hours for Discovery. Besides a marathon, how much programming does Habsro have to fill up 12 hours?

I don't see CN canning MLP since it also has a successful toy line. Shows like Young Justice and Thundercats had failed toy lines and their shows got canned.

If it got put on CN, I can see it sharing the weekend morning slot alongside Pokemon.

I don't see anything wrong with it considering the partnership Hasbro and Discovery had when they first joined together to create The Hub back in 2010. As long as they keep MLP the way it is since the start of G4 and stay true to what made the show such a hit, It's not much of a huge deal for me.
