It is stated that Sunset's element is Empathy by the people writing the Legend of Everfree movie. As to why she got mindreading ability to more so emphatise her element.

 

again, talking about her cutie mark, not element. RD's element is loyalty, but howdoes her cuie mark reflect that? It doesn't. Neither does Shimmy's cutie mark- which has a different meaning- symbolize empathy in any way.

Well, true. (Even though I think her element is empathy as McCarthy said.)

I think her cutie mark is supposed to represent her two sides, or more her transition from evil to good/antagonist to protagonist.

The red part showing her evil side and the yellow part showing her good side.

so you're saying that it was her destiny to become evil, and then good. How fucked is that, when presumably (since we never see her get her CM, even in her comic) she was still a foal when she got it? And aren't you supposed to realize what you're meant to do before it appears? Sunset would've had to known being an evil demon and being brought to light was her special talent, which makes no sense. Also, why is it shaped like the sun, in that case?

Well, then maybe it means change (in life) in general.

My headcanon is that she lived with a family which treated her badly and she wanted to escape from it, which why she became so obsessed with being better than everyone else. (At least the comics back this theroy up.)

Maybe she got her CM when she realized that she wanted to change her situation and become a magician (as an example).

 

The reason why her cutie mark is a sun is either because it has something to do with magic or (and this is more likely the case) simply because her name is Sunset.

...Or it is a hint to her "aggression problem". xD

 

Or maybe it means nothing of all this, and the writers and designers did not thought of what it could mean and choose it only because it looked cool and it is the opposite to Twilight's star. °^°
