movies/tv What's your favorite Studio Ghibli movie?

Whisper of the Heart ( also my favorite movie in general ); I really like how the story combines a coming of age, romance, and finding one's voice as an artist, type plots in one movie. And like all good Ghibli films, it has extremely well crafted characters.

I know there's a place you walked
Where love falls from the trees
My heart is like a broken cup
I only feel right on my knees.
I spit out like a sewer hole
Yet still receive your kiss
How can I measure up to anyone now
After such a love as this?

Pretty much this. My close second is Princess Mononoke, followed by Spirited Away.

Mine is Spirited Away because I love the creativity and how strange it is. It was the first Ghibli film I saw when I was around 5.

And yeah, Spirited Away was my first Ghibli Film as well ( And that song played during the credits get's me every time ). I saw it about age 12, after it won the Academy Award for best animated film, I forced my family to take me to see it in theaters; after I saw that film, Miyazaki movie junkie within a span of a couple years max :proud: . There's probably no way to measure precisely how Hayao Miyazaki's films have influenced me, as they were such a big part of my life when I was a teenager. ( Bit off topic there but had to say it :smug: )

'My Neighbour Totoro' was my first, I watched a few with my ex who loved Studio Ghibli. However, this was the one I enjoyed the most and the one which I remember above the rest.

What isn't my favorite Studio Ghibli film? I enjoy Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Whisper Of The Heart and The Cat Returns the most. Howl's Moving Castle is fairly good. My Neighbor Totoro is unforgettable and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is probably the film that showcased how capable Studio Ghibli is at making great films.

If I had to pick a least favorite, it would probably be Ponyo.

Another vote for Kiki's Delivery Service. :)

Same. The first one I saw was Totoro, second one was Castle in the Sky.

Both were excellent films, but Kiki's Delivery Service is my favorite. :yay:

I've seen all of the ones that got an official English dub, except for Mononoke.

Brother warned me its got some graphic violence, so I passed. :(

I'm quite surprised nobody mentioned Howl's Moving Castle yet.

That was an absolute classic! Great for the family plus who knew that a granny as the main character would be so awesome? It's such a whacky adventure and I love it to pieces!

Definitely a recommend for anyone who enjoys those kinds of movies.

Mine is Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.  I've seen it about a dozen times at this point, and have a large, framed movie poster of it on my wall, not to mention the manga and a book of watercolor art by Miyazaki related to both adaptations.  I get kind of obsessed sometimes.

I just love the main character.  She's strong and intelligent, wants humanity and nature to live in harmony with one another, and extends compassion to her enemies.  Speaking of which, the antagonists are great, too.  Kushana is absolutely ruthless, and Kurotowa is often very amusing.

I've watched quite a few of Ghibli's films at this point, and haven't found any I don't like.  I can't wait for The Wind Rises to finally be released on DVD.

Thrackerzod is best pony.

I've only seen Ponyo and Princess Mononoke. Even though I love both, I'm going to go with Princess Mononoke. Even though I haven't finished watching it, it's still a fantastic movie, as it has an environmental message done right.

A Ghibli thread and all anyone talks about is Miyazaki. No love for the traumatising Grave of the Fireflies?

To be fair though, Miyazaki's work is the best of Ghibli's output, although I don't think he, or the studio themselves, have made a good film since Howl's Moving Castle. For me my favourite is probably Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away, a very close call between the two. I absolutely love it when Miyazaki works with a good plot (and doesn't just rely on whimsy) and some mature themes, he's moved further and further away from this as his career has gone on. I'll echo all the love for My Neighbour Totoro, Nausicaa, Laputa Castle in the Sky and Kiki's Delivery Service, a slew of amazing films from him. I don't much care for Castle of Cagliostro or Porco Rosso though. And I hated Ponyo. The Wind Rises was ok at best.

For more non-Miyazaki Ghibli love people should watch Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday, Whisper of the Heart and The Cat Returns.

now this is a hard question....

my other internet name is from Spirited Away (and Naruto)- Chihirolee....I've had that username (with various numbers afterwards) for over 7 years now.

Ponyo is best animation I've ever seen

Howl's Moving Castle has the cutest story of all the movies

Grave of Fireflies is so sad I can't watch it all the way through but I would say it's the most mature animated movie EVER

Nausicaa is my husband's all time favorite Ghibli movie (but the Ohms creep me out)

The Wind Rises is the best love story of all the realistic Ghibli movies

Princess Mononoke is a movie I would watch over and over because of the history behind it (the folklore, the FOLKLORE!) , and the themes involved

now that I think about it....I would say Pom Poko....It's not a well known Ghibli film, (none of my anime friends knew about it)  but the themes, folklore, maturity, and overall story just puts everything good about the other films in one unique story that is entertaining from beginning to end.

Yes, Pom Poko is my favorite Ghibli film.

So far, my favorite is Spirited Away. Very touching about what happened to the main character's parents.

All my life needed was a sense of someplace to go. I don't believe that one should devote his life to morbid self-attention. I believe that someone should become a person like other people.
