gaming What games would you consider works of art?

Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Myst, and the original Halo game, both of which were fantastic in terms of storytelling.

Halo had a unique story on a scale that nobody had attempted yet, and it became the pioneer of first person shooters. It's fairly self explanatory.

However, I'd rank Deus Ex even higher on the list - the gameplay is fantastic, but the storyline is good enough to become it's own novel or movie. They spent so much time including the tiniest details that it really makes the game cohesive unlike any others.

Sure, you could blast your way through the story mode in 10 hours or less, but to find EVERYTHING in the game takes somewhere upwards of 80 hours. Emails from hacked computers 6 hours into the game can be read from the senders computer 40 hours into the game later, and suddenly the story will make more sense - and piecing the grand puzzle together and finding the connections between characters provides an immensely satisfying feeling.

If you don't own Deus Ex: Human Revolution, you should buy it. Hands down it's my favorite game of all time. ($20 on Steam, and $5-10 on Steam during sales.)

And on the same level with Deus Ex is Myst. One of the earliest video games, it had a very imaginative and captivating way to tell a story: they didn't. You appear on an island, and you have to figure out what happened, why you're there, and how to get off of it on your own. The puzzles and sheer depth of that game/series is magnificent.

The sequels are just as wonderful: the landscapes are very fantasy-oriented, yet somehow grounded in reality. The puzzles are difficult, so difficult that it a pen and paper are necessary to write relevant information found in various parts of the world to recall later.

Cyan Worlds (the creators of Myst) are working on a new game, Obduction, which looks to be a game of the same magnitude. There is no other video game I'm looking forward to more than that.

WHERE IS THE MORROWIND!??!

Morrowind was REALLY compelling,

Oblivion was fun,

and Skyrim was excellent design with no soul.

(opinions)

I haven't played MW. :(

I saw gameplay videos before though, it looks ok, but I would have to really play it first to know.

The only games I would consider masterpieces are:

Morrowind (already being discussed, I see :))

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (if you like Civilization, you'll either love AC or you'll be wrong)

Half-Life 2 (may be some bias here, but it is by far my favorite FPS)

Totally agree with you on Chrono Trigger and Marrowind.

The Legend of Zelda games for the N64 hold a dear place in my heart. especially Majoras Mask. Super Metroid is also great.

Been playing alot of Dark Souls lately. that game has proven to be truly somethin else

Most of the games I've played I would call art. Okay so maybe Street Fighter isn't the medium's 2001: A Space Odyessy, but I don't play games that I don't perceive have any artistic merit. However, there are times, whether it's an on running and slow building theme or a singular moment that manages to reach out and touch something within me that elevates the game to true artistry. Of the ones I've played and in no particular order:

-Alan Wake

-Deus Ex (All three, yes, even Invisible War)

-Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

-Metal Gear Rising

-The Mass Effect trilogy

-Bioshock Infinite

-Red Dead Redemption

-Assassin's Creed (almost all of them, but Revelations and III in particular tug at my heartstrings.)

-Fallout 3

-Journey

-Heavy Rain

-Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker/Twilight Princess

This is something I've thought about a lot. And I've come to the conclusion that there's only 2 games I know of that I would consider art.

The first, is Okami.

Okami-wii.jpg

This is my favorite game. For many reasons.

First of all, it just looks amazing. All the characters and areas are well designed, and in a very appealing style, no less. It tries to use its own, traditionally-inspired style, which works very well for it. Likewise, all the characters are written well, have their own personalities, and aside from a few one-off characters, are very memorable (Especially Waka  :P ). The gameplay varies between consoles, but the Wii version absolutely nails it for me; while it can be wonky at times, this game does its best at showing just how great motion controls can be. It plays out like a standard RPG with real-time fights, meaning that reacting to enemy actions is often just as important as your own attacks. An area where this stands out the most is the boss battles. OH JEEZ, THE BOSSES. They each have their own quirk to them; just attacking won't get you very far. They make you use your abilities quite a bit, and in creative ways. Speaking of which, every ability you get remains relevant throughout the game; not one becomes obsolete. Have I mentioned the music yet? If not, go check out the soundtrack of this game; there's very few tracks that aren't amazing. There's also TOOOONS of side-things to do that'll keep a completionist busy for days.

I think I've text-walled this one enough. Suffice it to say that this game is amazing in nearly every aspect. It does have repeated bits later on, but it's mostly boss battles, and as I've said, the boss battles in this game are universally good.

Second, we've got Dust: An Elysian Tail.

Y'know what I said about Okami? Pretty much copy and paste it here. But, in some areas it's better, and in some, it's not. The main area where this game is better is in the characters. There are less of them, yeah, but the ones that are there all have their own unique charm. Whether it be the calm and collected Ahrah or the insane antics of Reed, there's enough uniqueness here that everyone is memorable. That said, the game is pretty short if you don't do everything. Which is fine, since it does what it needs to; I'd likely have liked it better if it were longer, but it's still great nonetheless.

But, in my eyes, the make-or-break part of any game is its storyline. Which is something these games don't just do well. These games tell two of the greatest stories I've ever heard. They have their happy moments, they have their sad moments, and they have their angering moments. Most games I've played can achieve these on some level, but these two... They go above and beyond the call here. I have never felt stronger when playing a game than I did when playing these two.

When considering looks, characters, gameplay, music, content, and storyline, these games are both beyond amazing. Art is a term I use strictly, but these two? They've earned it. ;)

WOW that was longer than I thought... Um...
Here, have a Fidget!

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Even after all these years I am and so many others are still charmed to arguably call it one of the greatest games ever made.

Okami is beautiful in almost every aspect. It has that Legend of Zelda open world charm with a more Bayonetta-like combat style. (At least it reminds me of Bayonetta) The storyline & characters are intriguing and the atmosphere and OST are oh so wonderful.

I was freaking out a little of how I almost didn't find Journey... Journey is THE definition of video game art (imo).
Then, I can also think of Okami, Xenoblade Chronicles, Heavy Rain, The Walking Dead, Shadow of the Colossus, Zelda: Wind Waker and all Mother games (including Earthbound).

Metal Gear Solid because the storyline is amazing. The environments are awesome. And it really makes you think.

Daytona USA, Sega Rally, Ridge Racer and Scud Race because the environments are full of scenery porn. And Sega Rally and Ridge Racer have musical differences. Sega Rally's music reflects on the fact that rallying is dirty and gritty. So hard rock was selected. Ridge Racer's music is about how Technology influences a city and how techno is mainstream. Which is why it is techno. Tomb Raider also has lots of beautiful environments.
