Twilight has become too perfect for me to care about her anymore

Rather than magic, she loves knowledge, which is something she still can use everywhere she wants. She's more than an overpowered unicorn...

Anyway, i can see what you mean, but i don't think that's a bad thing.

Knowledge has its own limits. A know it all in Equestria knowledge, might not mean anything when they know nothing about the other world they occupy. In the show, she can just go research any Equestria problem while the movies has her improvise with any current knowledge in her head.

"Character development....."

Character development that grants her godlike power? Character development that makes her an unparalleled genius?

I'm not really sure, but what I do know is that I certainly don't find her as relatable as she used to be. When I think back to how she was originally portrayed in season 1, I just don't see too many of those traits anymore.

WHEN THE BUCK HAS TWILIGHT SHOWN GODLIKE POWERS? Oh you mean that one scene in Twilights Kingdom where she fought Tirek in that amazingly well done fight? Well ya I would like to assume absorbing the power of two deities would give you incredible power, other than that, we saw her fighting power in Threes a Crowd, and She could probably barely beat a Tatzlwurm on her own, if at all, that is not godlike AT ALL. Oh and how could I forget, she is SOO smart and no one is smarter than her, RR is canon btw, and she is Definitely not an unrivaled genius... Twilight is not much more than she was in s3, she is Wise, she has grown, and I like her MORE now because of that. She is the "Avatar" of the MLPverse, she is an evergrowing machine meant to be the future ruler of Equestria.

Also to the one who said she had Goku like powers...

Goku can destroy planets with his finger

Twilight can destroy mountains exhausting herself in the process

It's hard to like a perfect character. Twilight is close to become a Mary Sue, she can't have problems unlike the other mane 6 now, because she can solve almost everything with her magic...

She's been able of solving a lot of problems with magic since season 1, and it still fails sometimes, remember "Bats!"?... And magic doesn't solve all of her problems.

I don't mean to rant, but I don't like it when bronies denounce characters for being "Mary Sue", or too perfect, besides original characters, Twilight Sparkle is a pony that gets chastised for this, despite the fact we see her commit errors and has vulnerability. Twilight Sparkle is a three dimensional character, she is smart, she is classy and prone to nervousness, yet out of all the character traits she has, the some only see her as too perfect, bypassing her weaknesses, and thus should not be taken seriously nor figuratively. It is too easy to fall into the habit, of seeing what you choose to see, or what someone else wants you to see, Twilight Sparkle has my respect, because she has earned my affection, she does not always use magic to solve problems, she taught Rainbow Dash history of the Wonderbolts in "Testing .. 1,2,3", and she taught the cutie mark crusaders lessons in "Twilight Time", so it would behove to see more of what Twilight Sparkle can amount to, she is a alicorn princess now, you can accept it or continue to refute it by whining, and not support what is being argued, I think the term "Mary Sue" has been used and abuse too much, rather than putting down a character for being perfect as you see it, keep balance by looking at the multiple dynamics of a character, don't let yourself become desensitised by perfection or flaws, because all of us have both.

WHEN THE BUCK HAS TWILIGHT SHOWN GODLIKE POWERS?

Read my opening post. Being able to permanently transform one species into another pretty much qualifies as godlike power to me. You could say that there's no indication that it was permanent, but there's also no indication that it was not. That's the thing. In other instances where Twilight showed off a lot of power, there was always a balance that was established for it. For instance, had it not been established that the time-travel spell could only be used once, I would certainly still think that time-travelling is an ability that Twilight still possesses, and thus I would have questioned why she didn't use it during times when it would have been necessary.

But that was not done with this spell, and thus I don't really have much reason to believe that it wasn't permanent.

She is the "Avatar" of the MLPverse, she is an evergrowing machine meant to be the future ruler of Equestria.

Exactly when did Twilight become the "Avatar of the MLPverse"? I know that her development and growth was a big part of the show when it first started, but I certainly would not have thought that the development of the other five was so much less important, especially to the point where the show could have actually ended with them not having accomplished anything (what with Magical Mystery Cure being the intended series finale).

In any case, I'm really getting tired of the show going out of its way to glorify Twilight above everyone else (i.e. the mane five being reduced to helpless damsels while Twilight is portrayed as the final hope for all ponykind, getting her own solo moment of heroism).

Mmh, that's true. :P Then I hope she'll fail in season 5 too... (Bats! is one of my favorite episodes, I like the idea of the mane 6 trying to fix a problem caused by Twilight's magic)

Equestria Girls was a missed opportunity to really develop Twilight Sparkle. The movie already takes her way outside of her comfort zone, but has her rehash the friendship with the Mane 5 of an alternate world. Instead TS could have made new original friends with new personalities and the whole shebang. Put those friendship skills to real world use and develop new tolerances for differences.

Things with Twilight Sparkle can still be shaken up if they have her work with some new characters and get her out of the comfort zone from time to time. She could be put into more non-violent conflicting situations that doesn't revolve around the Mane 5 and requires diplomacy to resolve.

Most declarations of "Mary Sue" are code for the "writers aren't doing what I want" and I want my favorite pony to be the central character. Twilight is the central character of show and is no different than any central character. Maybe it's just me, but it seems half the fan base is pining away for a show that never existed.

So judging by the bit of season 5 content we saw in Rainbow Dash and Rarity's promos, it appears that both of them will have their cutie marks changed and thus be reduced to helplessness. I can only imagine that this will be yet another predicament that Twilight will need to get them out of?

  • 5 weeks later...

Correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't the over-exaggeration of her lack of flying skills there to say she still has a lot to learn. If someone is a master in their profession does that stop them from being curious and learning new things?

Twilight still suffers through the motions of life, but she's still got a long way to go before we really see any major changes to her. As we see with Tirek, she still hasn't learned everything there is. She still makes mistakes and tries to overcompensate for them.
