How do you determine your OC's colors?

I mostly pick mine based on their names. For example, one of my OCs is named "Sesame Seed." Thus, she's green with brown hair and a strand of pink just to make her stand out a bit. Another OC of mine, "Honey Dew," is yellow with a plain brown mane/tail. I love simple designs like those.

For me, I don't really know how I came up with Rainbow Pastel's colors. Blue is my faveorite color, blue is also my eye color in real life, and blonde is my hair color in real life. My creativity, imagaination, emotions, and language is colorful. I originally made her blue and yellow but I characterized her with my own colorful traits as she is my ponysona. I didn't want to her to look dull and I wanted her to standout. I added red, blue, and teal. The teal only lasted in one drawing and it turned into light green. After a long time I altered her rainbow colors to more of a pastel kind of tone to fit her name. Not long ago I gave her a light brown spot in one of her eyes since I have that in real life as well. Most of the color swatches fit into the same pallete.

Originally, I wanted my OC to be grey with a black mane (I recolored a Soarin pic and used it as my YouTube avatar for a while). I wanted his name to be "Afterburner". Eventually, I stumbled upon the pony creator and chose to make my OC a mild blue with a black and yellow mane. Further into the future,... Something that I can't recall happened and I made my OC's color a periwinkle, and made his black mane a very dark blue mane so that it blended more with the rest of the color (at least, just the coat color).

I wanted his mane to resemble a flame.

For my main OC, the one in my icon, I base it off of myself. My hair is pink and white, so I simply matched the hair colour and eye colour to my own. For my other OC's, I had a general idea of their talent, and I used a couple colour pallette sites online that are my go to for art.

I somehow ended up using a different method for each of my OCs!

Sweet Style- I knew that she would be a model, and I felt that golden hair would emphasise that. I chose a pale cream for her body, because I wanted her to have a soft, gentle appearance. The pink (used for her eyes, ribbons, cutiemark and magic aura) accented the yellow colours nicely and enhanced the femininity of her design. :D

Ivy Swirl- She was the last of three characters that I originally designed for a school project, and I felt that orange worked well with the blue and pink colour schemes of the over two. I chose green for her eyes and cutiemark to create contrast within the design.

Unnamed pegasus (in spoiler)- I came across a a photo of a really pretty sunrise, and it inspired me.  :P

I only have one OC (in avatar) and I chose the colors to be white (coat) which contrasts well with a black mane and tail, and the black also contrasts well with a green stripe in the mane and tail. I also like the color green, so... I just like the way it looks. It appeals to me and it doesn't look ridiculous like those neon OCs, which I'm pretty sure mine isn't. (But correct me if I'm wrong)

Snowflake is my only OC because he is the pony world version of me. I just can't put him down to pretend to be someone else

the colors of Snowflake Frostflame are based off of Snowdrop well the specific shading was, Light Blue and White has always been my thing

Snowdrop is actually the ancestor of Snowflake

I started with grey fur, with red and blue hair. Changed it to Blue and dark blue hair. Finally here I am at white fur with blue hair.

I think we all can agree on something... "Ya gotta have blue hair!"

Yes I realize my avatar looks like Vinyl.

I use colour theory. It's essential for picking colours for about anything, whether it's a character, a scene's lighting, a logo, a vehicle, etc.

I also pick colours based on what kind of feel they should give off when you see them.

My OC, Star Australis, his colours are based on the colours of my coat of arms, Gold and a blue border, with a blue star in the middle, so I gave my OC the name Star Australis, an Australis is a collection of blue stars, that glow like our sun only in a hue of bright blue, due to hydrogen, also I like looking at the night sky, trying to see the constellations and distant stars, for those are traits I also gave to my character, plus gold and blue represent characteristics, for gold it symbolises wealth and generosity; for blue it symbolises loyalty and perseverance, so my colours closely represent the elements of loyalty and generosity, my two favourite ponies Rainbow Dash and Rarity.
