Mom Hates Bronies, and I Want Merch. Bad.

So by no means am I new to the fandom. Regardless, I have little pony stuff. I have a Fluttershy poster from a con, Luna sticker, Celestia sticker, a shirt, and SINGLE booster from the ccg. 2 of the 5 are from friends. Only reason I own things I bought is because my mom thought I was joking.  :eww:

So anyway I can't buy pony stuff because my sister told my mom every brony is a clopper/pedophile.

My mom is known to beleive everything she hears and/or sees.

So my mom gets REEEEEEALLY mad when I try to buy pony merch. CCG, tees, vinyls, you name it.

TL;DR: Mom hates bronies. WANT MERCH! HELP! :(

Buy it anyways. Be a rebel. Eventually she'll give up.

Also, punch your sister in the mouth. (Not really. I don't condone any form of abuse and take no responsibility for actions that may be linked to my post).

First things first, tell her what a brony really is. Tell her why you like the show, what bronies are all about, etc. If she refuses to listen or doesn't believe you, that's her problem. Buy merch anyway, or just move out.

Explain that there are thousands of other bronies like you, and she'll just have to deal with the fact that you like MLP. I'm a pegasister and my parents thought I was too old for the show, but I explained it and they bought me a TON of pony stuff for my birthday. Hehe :)

Unfortunately I can't get you merch.. Have you tried telling your mom that she can't believe everything she hears out of your sister?

Unfortunately I have. She won't beleive me. "Your sisters older,wiser..." etc. I think I'll just go out with friends and buy. It really's not fair. But what can you do. >_>

I have the same situation but I may be able to help a tiny bit. If you really really want pony merch, try getting a Tirek or Discord shirt or something that doesnt look girly. I tricked my parents into getting me a Discord shirt because he doesn't look like a pony and I said it was a dragon shirt. Just make sure in the description of the merch doesn't say "My little Pony" and you should be good. I'm sorry if this doesn't help it's the best thing I can do now but good luck! -_-

Given your situation, just buy the stuff and tell her that liking MLP doesn't make you a brony.  Just say you're a casual fan of the show. Hell, if you really want her to shut up about being a pedo/clopper, then just download a ton of porn (you know, normal stuff) and let her find it (Disclaimer: you probably shouldn't do this).

Or if you want to be blunt, just tell her that just because you like something doesn't mean you want to have sex with it.

You may just have to suck it up and wait until you can get out on your own.

I'd love to try but I'm not the bravest of folk. I feel like she'd mock me, but she'll have to accept who I am. I'll try and work up the courage. Thanks for the advice.

She knows about bronies, and that's the problem. I feel if she didn't know it'd be fine. But she found cloppers first. Thanks though, I'll try and explain it better.

Maybe you should start by having a talk with your sister. Like, straight up ask her why she called you a pedophile to your own mother??? Like, that, that's pretty messed up

Even if you don't like something or think it's weird, it baffles me that anyone would think insulting their own sibling like that is ok. I mean, assuming they aren't a pedophile, which I'm willing to bet you aren't :P

But seriously, that was actually very useful information and you raise some valid points.

Something else that may be relevant is my mom knows I'm in other fandoms. Transformers, Pokemon, Walking Dead, and Doctor Who. She thought I was to old for Pokemon and sighed and said "Aren't you a little old for that?" And the clerk actually defended me.

how credible is your sister? not very from the sound of it.

just call it out, ask your mom if she thinks your a pedo, when she says no (hopefully she says no), ask her why you would want to be in a fandom if they were all that way. explain your sister wasn't being honest.

every group has it's bad eggs, that doesn't everyone in the group is bad.

stand your ground and don't give up!

tell her why you like the show, it's not about sex, it's about friendship!

I wish you the best of luck, I know it can be hard to live in a house where your interests are belittled and called evil with accusations thrown all over the place.

@@zombienixon, Quite frankly, advice like the first paragraph (an FIM fan =/= brony) is one key reason why either many bronies remain in the closet or so many anti-bronies retain the vile "bronies are pedophiles" stereotype. It's brony separatism, and the stereotype-fueled suggestion hurts the fandom's growth, not helps.

What I suggest to you, OP is talk to your sister and mother. Explain to them what a brony is: a fan of Friendship Is Magic. Bronies aren't just older men, but also younger boys, girls, women, and everyone in between. Bronies can be extremely passionate and devoted to the community or casual. Show them episodes the transcend the base demographics like Suited for Success (a critique of executive meddling); Green Isn't Your Color; Winter Wrap Up; and Testing Testing 1, 2, 3. Tell your sister that the "bronies are pedophiles" stereotype is sexist, antifeminist, and completely against the vision of not only Friendship Is Magic, but MLP altogether. Over three years ago, Faust wrote an op-ed in Ms. Magazine calling out a very slanderous article about the show. Show them both the article as well as other fantastic things the fandom has done, including giving to charity ("The Brony Thank-You Fund," bronies worldwide immediately donating money to stranded cast members of FIM after Unicon collapsed), the eclectic variety of bronies in conventions around the world (BronyCon, Equestria LA, BUCK, Galacon, Everfree Northwest), and the high-quality fanart and music in the fandom.

Sow them also the world of brony plushies, too. There are two very well-known: WhiteDove-Creations and EquestriaPlush. High-quality, well-built plushies with a very gentle feel of minky fabric.

First, laugh at your mom. To believe the claim of one person and to use it to judge a whole group of people is the equivalent of trusting your fortune cookie on financial advice.

"My commitment will pay off? Well then, best keep on investing in Sega Dreamcast stock".

PS: don't actually laugh. You will make things worse.

You need to explain with logic the absurdity of a closed mind.

For example, a Christian bombed an abortion clinic and killed people.

Does this make all Christians murderers?

No?

Then how does it stand that all bronies are pedophiles or cloppers because some are?

Now I am aware that idiots exist. No offense to your mom, but after seeing a video of a gay son being verbally destroyed and disowned by his mother after coming out, it made me realize that humans can be monsters as well as morons. Moronsters.

The fact that your mom is known to believe anything she sees or hears is not a sign of a rational and intelligent individual. How can someone smart trust the statement of one individual without personally knowing all bronies. That is, by all definitions of the word, stupid.

I know that sounds like a mean thing to say, and it is I guess, but it is important to say for the next step I recommend.

Do it anyway. Buy pony merch. Just do it.

If your mom won't open her mind and realize that her actions are the equivalent of a five year old who won't stop crying because she ate a pumpkin seed and her brother told her a pumpkin will grow inside her, then quite frankly you have to make the tough choice of living by the rules of a paranoid close minded individual or perhaps force her to see that, hey, my son is a normal person and a brony. Not all bronies can be bad then, huh.

And again, it sounds mean, but it bothers me so much that just because your sister said something, suddenly, it's a witch hunt. Remember how stupid the U.S. was when we were scared that everyone was a communist? Yeah. It's the same thing. We looked stupid then and people who think that bronies are a threat look stupid now. There was the red scare and now it's the pink scare. Sweet jeebus...

Thank you, really. Probably the best advice I've gotten so far. I'll think about this, but I may veer away from showing episodes because they both are very judgemental. Also thanks for the links. I'll look into all of them.

Incredible. Couldn't have said it myself. It's not fair for some to be judged for others. I don't judge cloppers but for my mom to think every brony is not fair. It goes the same for every brony who's judged. Thank you so much for this. I could find use in the vinyl Discord I want could have some use...

I may have have figured put roughly to my mother.

I want to tell her that her views on bronies aren't fair to me. I feel she is being selfish in her manner because she is trying to mute my interests for her own, for lack of a better word "wanting", so that she doesn't have to deal with the fact that I'm different. It's not okay for her to do this because just because one guy does it, doesn't mean all bronies do. What does it matter if they were, as long as I'm not? Does she really think MLP will make me a pervert? She can't force her views on me. I'm old enough have my own perspective on the world. She enrolled me in a christian school (Though I am not of the sorts, no offense) To learn good morals and be a better person. My friends are more supportive in it then she is. What she us teaching me is to be a closed-minded person, who lets others shape me. If I like ponies so be it. It's no different from liking Doctor Who, per se. Her telling me I can't like this affects me. It hurts me. I am not ashamed of being a brony. I won't.

When I lived with my father, our cousins came over. Her child (Think he was 2?) played with a barbie. He was a boy. My dad noticed this and went a rant.

"He'll become gay!"

"It's not okay for him to like that!"

It goes without saying he's as narrow minded as I've ever seen.

I took the hint, and became much more secretive of my brony-ness.

When I moved in with my mom, I thought I could finally could be an open brony. I could wear tees, buy merch etc,

I came home from a local con with my friend and she thought I was joking when I walked in with my Fluttershy poster.

She began to put together the pieces, and was fine with it until my sister cane over while I was gone over the summer. She saw my Derpy shirt on the floor if my bed room and told my mom about bronies. Cloppers in particular. My sister was always a closed minded nitwit but I thought she would support me because she is quite a childish character. I let the criticism roll off my back until we were at wal-mart. I approached the till with a booster of MLP CCG cards in my hand. She glared at me at took them off the conveyer belt and threw them on the shelf. I shrugged it off and said "Don't worry, I'm paying,"

"don't ****ing care, You are NOT buying any ****ing little ponies"

I didn't talk to her fir a coupke hours until I came out of my room to get a coke.

"Are you upset about the cards?"

I replied with a sarcastic "No" and she said "Oh, okay."

Sorry I got a little off track.

Anyway...

I want to tell her how I feel. I want her to know I'm a brony and if she doesn't like it that's her loss. I want to tell her why FiM is good why I like it, and the community. However, all she thinks about when she hears "Brony" is "Pedophile". She needs to know I'm sick of it and it's not fair for her treat it like that.

EDIT: Sorry for spelling errors. Typing is not easy on a tablet.

If you're spending your money, your mother should not have any say in your choices in purchases.

But it seems that she has bought into the misconception that people who clop will become sexual predators.

Unfortunatley, some people's views on things (in this case, cloppers) will not change despite evidence proving otherwise.

She may be one of those individuals.

What you can do, however, is discretley buy pony merchandise.

Try to go out and buy some pony stuff when your mother isn't on the residence. And when you come home, hide your pony stuff somewhere.

Listen to me. Never try explain what is MLP to mom or your girl, if you do not want to ruin relationships. It makes worse only.
Bye merch and hide it, like me.

@@zombienixon, A couple of things.

  1. Only the first paragraph is addressed to you. The rest is to the OP.
  2. Three words: I don't care. Being a fan of FIM is all a brony is. There's no other criteria; believing there's such a case is blatantly overthinking the term. If comments like mine are what fuel you to ditch the "brony" title, then I'm not fueling the stereotypes. You are because you're scapegoating others through your actions and claiming how you're not one of "those" fans.

And I called you out because your advice earlier in the thread was very poor. You sent implications about how bronies have an inherent stench of grossness. That it's okay to be a fan of FIM, but NOT be a brony. The "bronies are disgusting/pedophiles" stereotype is perpetuated through your separatist advice, and it'll only solidify his sister's and mother's sexism more.

Sorry for posting so much here but man your sister is being one closminded ignorant motherbucker. My parents are the same way not even listening to me when I want pony stuff. One method I tried to some success is civil disobedience. You don't talk to your mom or sis, refuse to do stuff, basically going on strike. You could post pictures of ponies around your house to show it means a lot. Be careful they may try to punish you but if you are determined you can keep going. If anypony has something to add to this idea feel free. I believe in you and don't want you to suffer like I have. Ignorance is the souce of hate in this world.
