movies/tv Most Depressing Episode(s) In Any Series

Castle Bleck

Oddly, Star Wars The Clone Wars. Episode 2 of Seaosn 3 (I think?) when the clones have to defend Kamino. 99 was a character that you just loved because despite his disabilities and deformities he's ready to do what's necessary as a clone in the Republic army. His death was so sad  :( Mainly because you could see it coming. What made it particularly heart wrenching is the scene from the episode before hand when Heavy (a clone) gives 99 his medal and says "You're one of us". He was such an amazing character to lose

Some South Park episodes felt pretty depressing, like the one with all the kids editing their photographs and trying to fit these crazy bullshit standards of what it means to be "beautiful."

The episode was obviously taking a stance against that kind of mindset and behavior in our culture, but it still broke my heart to see kids going through this, even the fictional animated kids in South Park. Especially since I know that there are millions of real-life kids who go through this shit every day.

Honestly, the sadest episode of a show I've seen is the Courage the Cowardly Dog episode which explains what happened to Courage's parents and shows what the Doctor is trying to do to Courage. The doctor ultimately fails and it ends with retribution but it's just sad that Courage was ripped away from his parents as a pup.

That one episode of House where a mom has a seizure and nearly drowns her baby in a tub, but then in the hospital the mom continues to try and kill her newborn son due to a psychological breakdown. The team learns that it was actually due to a combination of allergies and cancer that caused the mom to go crazy. But unfortunately, her efforts paid off.  Her baby dies. The mother refuses treatment because of what she did and the father is left to mourn it all. The part where Chase has to do the autopsy on the baby was straight up depressing. That episode pretty much turned me off of House.

There was an episode of Transformers Beast Wars, where a white tiger, a friend to Tigertron, one of the Maximals, is killed in a landslide started by the Predacons. That episode had me bawling as a kid.

Then there was an episode of Batman TAS, where Tim Drake tries to help a young girl being chased by her abusive father. Although it turns out that the abusive father is Clayface and that she was a part of him. She tackles Clayface, sacrificing herself to save Robin and effectively dies. It takes Batman to stop Robin from avenging her and killing Clayface. The show drove the point home when Batman says "Sometimes it's not always a happy ending." Detective Bullock asks what other Charges should be filed and Tim says " Yeah... murder."

Several particular episodes of my favorite Sci-fi series, Babylon 5, first where the Markab race is infected with an ancient plague, believing to have been punished for their sins. The entire station works to try and find a cure, and they do, but when they reach the quarantine zone to administer it, they find everyone there, men, women & children, all dead. An entire species, wiped out.

Then there's the episode where B5 is used as a staging ground for a massive earth invasion, and the cast all have to bunker up with various soldiers, growing new friendships and attachments. But when the soldiers leave and the results of the invasion are displayed, all the soldiers the main cast bonded with perished in the fight.

Another episode, where Dr. Franklin is trying to cure a young alien boy, but his parents religious practices prevent him from doing so. Franklin operates on the boy anyways, but later on his parents take him away, and when Franklin finds out why, he rushes to the families quarters, but arrives to see that the parents already put their son to death, saying that his soul already left his body during  the surgery.

And finally, when when Prime Minister Mollari of the Centauri republic finds his world under attack, other races being played against him, he receives a threat from a race called the Drakh, allies of the ancient race known as the shadows. They threaten to detonate nukes on the tattered remains of his homeworld, if he doesn't willingly surrender to a parasite called a Keeper that will control his every move, and turn Centauri prime into a staging ground for future galactic wars.

A very great series Babylon 5 was, and it's feels episodes like those that made it all the more great.

South parks you're getting old and Kenny dies were two depressing episodes.

This may be weird, but the first tv show episode that made me cry was magical mystery cure in mlp. When twilight sang Ive got to find a way, I literally cried a puddle on my bed.

Don't forget Kamina's death in Gurren Lagann, or the death of Nicolas Wolfwood in Trigun.

In western cartoons there's Brian's death on Family Guy.  Fans hated his death so much that the writers actually pulled a deus ex machina filled story arc out of their backsides to bring Brian back.

Outside animation, there's the 10th Doctor from Doctor Who.  "I don't want to go!"

And, stepping away from TV and into interactive media real fast...

Aerith's murder at the hands of Sephiroth.  Made even worse when you realize it was Cloud who drowned her trying to give her a peaceful burial (just a theory).

Alternatively there's Lady Odessa SIlverberg's death in Suikoden II.  In a series where you have the ability to keep every party member alive if you do enough side stories/gearing up/staying focused, she is the one you can't save.  To top it off, her last wish is for you, the main character, to throw her body into the sewer so there is no corpse.

Gets me every time, but the thing is, I cry harder at a scene earlier in the episode. It's the one where the Doctor is sitting with Wilf and they see Donna.

"Don't you see, Doctor? You need her! Won't she make you laugh again? Good ol' Donna?"

Every friggin' time with that scene.

Revived Doctor Who season 1 episode 8 "Father's Day"

Where Rose travels back in time to meet her father who died when she was a baby and ends up creating a paradox

Revived Doctor Who season 1 finale "The Parting of the Ways"

Especially that one scene where Rose says "But what do I do everyday? What do I do? Get up catch the bus go to work and come back home. Eat chips and go to bed. Is that it?" and then talks about what she learned from the Doctor that involves making a stand and making things happen instead of sitting down and watching things happen. That one scene hit me in the soul because it's how I view the world and what I would like to do to help the world become a better place.

Arthur season 7 episode 10 "April 9th"

Where there was a fire at Arthur's school, causing some of the staff to get injured and almost costing Arthur's dad's life. This caused Arthur to worry about his dad even more.

All my life needed was a sense of someplace to go. I don't believe that one should devote his life to morbid self-attention. I believe that someone should become a person like other people.
