movies/tv Pridelanders getting Cutie Marks?

I just watched the preview for disney's new lion king related show, the lion guard (Preview link posted below), and I can't believe my eyes. Kion, son of Simba, roars and then gets this light based image on his shoulder, similar to the way a pony gets their cutie mark. A PRIDELANDER getting a CUTIE MARK. This is huge to fans of both tlk and mlp. Seriously I hope there won't be any problems just because of the similarities. See for yourselves below.

Your telling me. It's a lion too so I'm gonna assume it's definition is courage or bravery or any of the other synonyms for them.

I just had a random crackpot theory on why cm's are now active in the pridelands..... disney/hasbro mashup that is similar to eqg but with the lion king instead lol.

Like that honey badger would put up with being carried by a hyena.

At least it's not a tribal arm band....? I'm not really sure why it would be a paw print, but I guess #disneylogic.

Not to quote friend (rafiki, as his name translates to friend) or nothing but "Look HARDER" ..... Tis a lion. Stop it at .56 seconds, it'll be clear as day.

I know I'd be tearing those creeps a new one, especially threatening a friend. Looks like Kion needs a bit of hero training 101, and there's no better teacher than the SKOF.

I've seen this clip before. I'm surprised at how many people are talking about it. I hope that this is explained in the show, otherwise, this'll create a few plot holes.

Right, though it still won't explain how an Equestrian ritual (whatever it is actually since it's a natural phenomenon to ponies) got to the pridelands without the use of discordian magic, any of starswhirls mirror portals, or my oc's intervention (the latter being a joke).

I saw this and went O.o also this show looks decent minus the fact it'll be on Disney Junior.

Can't agree more though I already watch a girls cartoon, so wtbn watch something based on a cherished disney series even if it's on an early childhood channel? I'm there for the plane, the familiar characters and landscape, not because I wanna be creepy. People older than us do it with shows remade from their generations, why can't we.

Edt. EQD did a story on it. I'm partially shocked since I didn't think there were so many fans of the pridelands among us (herectics! they shall burn at the stake!  jk). Glad it made the pony news but I kinda feel stupid for not noting them about it before making it a subject here.... happens.

I just saw the premiere a few minues ago. The marks they get seem to only be ancillary to the storyline, or at least they were in the premiere. And they all get lion heads. It's more of an indicator of being in the Lion Guard rather than a rite-of-passage like a cutie mark.

The show has its moments, but it's definitely Disney Jr. fare. While they didn't gloss over the hyenas killing a couple of gazelles, a lot of the conflict seems simplistic. Also there seems to be a big reliance on fart jokes (but I suppose that's par in parcel with the TLK universe. )

Rob Lowe as Simba was a disappointment. He reads his lines like he was reading a book report. It was jarring compared to how Matthew Broderick played him.

Bunga the honey badger reminds me of Pinkie and Discord - he loves chaos and is a goof. But his character is treading a fine line between being endearing, or utterly annoying.

There's this one girl lion cub who hates bugs and complains about breaking her claws. At first she reminded me of Diamond Tiara, but after thinking about it, she's more like S1 Rarity...

I was disappointed with the hyenas - they're totally one dimensional. A much more interesting story dynamic could have been achieved if one of the hyenas wasn't evil (and stupid) and was a candidate for the Lion Guard. But that doesn't seem likely.

The animation was good, though Timon and the hyenas seemed off-model compared to the movies. The songs were OK, nothing spectacular.

Can't say for sure yet if it's worth watching. Will catch a few more episodes to find out. I can say compared to the first MLP episode I ever saw - "Winter Wrap Up" - my experience with that MLP episode was a lot better than this, but "WRU" didn't sell me on MLP immediately, either. So we'll see I guess...

That stinks about the hyenas because they're my favorite minor villains from the Lion King, also shame about Simba's voice actor too.

This show is just weird, watching it with keeping TLK2 in mind, where said guards (especially their leader) are nowhere to be seen

Whew and I thought it was just me misremembering TLK2! It's especially strange since they fast forward in that movie to adult Kiara, and there was no brother of hers in sight anywhere...

Why though? Why does a frickin' lion need a cutiemark for being brave? And why did they have to mess up the best movie(s) ever?

THIIIS.

It's kinda disappointing how Disney keeps creating alternative versions of what happened after the events of TLK1! They are all canon and they all contradict each other... Dammit Disney, make up your mind already!

Shortly after the first movie premiered, Disney published a series of books called "The Six New Adventures of The Lion King". They were stories of Kopa, Simba's firstborn son. Then TLK2 came out and Kopa got replaced by Kiara... And now the events of TLG seem to cancel out the whole Kiara/Outlanders storyline. WHAT THE HELL is going on in the Pridelands??

But back to the main topic... I wonder if the Guard cutie mark is a permanent thing. Or does it only appear when the Guard members go on an adventure?

I'm kind of wondering about this too. The fact that Kion's disappeared after he did his initial roar made it seem like it's only there when one is brave, but at the end they were all there on all their "flanks". If that's the case then the marks are more of an insignia to show other animals what the group represents rather than an indicator to help guide them like a cutie mark.

So, ah...anyone else actually watch this (the special and/or the episodes themselves?) I watched The Return of the Roar and the first episode ("Never Judge a Hyena by It's Spots") and I have to say, it's not too bad overall. The animation is great! Perhaps it isn't as good as the original movie, but definitely on par with Simba's Pride, the direct to video sequel from way back when. The music is also pretty nice, especially the song in the Hyena episode and I love how they introduce terms from African languages.

Characters are a bit hit-or-miss, though. I really like Ono, the egret, mostly because I love his voice actor in The Middle and I can't help thinking of Brick Heck every time he opens his mouth (er...beak!). I also rather like the hippo, Beshte (sp?) as he's very laid-back and friendly (although, I seem to remember from the original movie that lions eat hippos, so...eh?) Kion (Simba's son and leader of the Lion Guard) is pretty boring, though, and seems like he's a bit too perfect. The cheetah, (Fuli? I think?), is kind of a stuck-up bitch and Bunga the honey badger just seems to try too hard to be the new Timon and Pumbaa (in fact, he's even stated to be their "nephew.")

Anyway, I probably won't go out of my way to watch it, but it's not bad for what it is.

I'm a touch behind. I wanted to watch it but only caught parts of both. So far what I've seen is a mixed bag. I love how familiar they kept everything but there's a lot turning me off to the show. My main turn offs are the chronology and the whole cutie mark thing. I dislike the unoriginal va's but it's understandable that some are unable to be used. Kion seems a bit much on the whole situation. He's got the same attitude as nuka did, "daddy isn't favoring me like some others, I'm gonna go out of my way to make him proud". He also acts as if he's been trained. Tales of the past and training are different things. s for the group I understand why they did the whole various species thing but the whole storyline of tlk mainstreamed lions, it doesn't really seem right to revolve a related show around the animals they hadn't made sentient, like the leopards and such, even though they may have been sentient in the original.

On the other hand, seeing as much as I did it was kind of like returning home after a near fatal case of severe homesickness. I'm gonna have to really catch up to see whether I'm for or against the show.
