gaming Darkest Mario Moments

The Thousand-Year Door and Super Paper Mario were both pretty much when I learned that the Mario-verse doesn't screw around.

But among other things, the Shadow Queen and Dimentio (Evidently, Nintendo have their own versions of Sauron and Kefka now... Good to know.).

While I haven't played too many Mario games, I do recall River Twygz from Super Paper Mario. Many things are so unnerving about that level, from the distorted music when you go underwater to the skeleton arms following you as you swim. It always makes me nervous each time I remember it.

Okay, it isn't dark than it is more disturbing, but I suppose you get where I'm going with why I find it creepy.

The World Of Nothing right before that gives it some pretty stiff competition, IMO.

Good point, haha. The World of Nothing also makes me just as disturbed as River Twygz, if not more. :P

I know you already said the Shadow Queen, but I still think she is the darkest thing the Mario series has ever put out. She an immortal dark spirit that can blanket the world in darkness, vaporized Sir Grodus, steals the souls of the audience to heal herself and even when she was defeated in the past, she cast a curse on the heroes that caused them to slowly transform into inanimate black chest, forcing them to remain fully conscious and alone for all eternity. It's a wonder any of them remained sane...

That not even getting into Rougeport, which prominently displays a hangman's noose in the town square, has a thriving mafia presence, and, in the japanese version at least, had a chalk outline of a murdered Toad.

The only consolation was that the Queen herself got trapped in a casket for just as long (not that it gave her any empathy in the end) and that Mario ultimately helped them out.

The first properly dark moment in a Mario game I noticed was the ending of the first boss in New Super Mario Bros. It's pretty disturbing, even for a Mario game.

I think paper mario 2/3 are pretty dark. Much more mature than any other game in the mario series in my opinion. And not mature in the call of duty type. Mature like the dialogue being a lot wittier than in normal mario games. And having more spiritual references.

Yup, Dimentio and Shadow Queen totally take the cake. They're just the most dark and depraved antagonists in the Mario series. But one truly disturbing moment is the fact that in the very first few minutes of the first game, Bowser is successful at killing Mario. God knows what would've happened had not the Star Spirits found him. But in all honesty, I kinda find the darkest game to be Luigi's Mansion. I know the Paper Mario series are more mature and dark in tone, but still, Luigi's Mansion and its sequel are pretty much rife with Nightmare fuel. Specially because of the infamous "hanging Luigi" silhouette and the theory of him being dead all along

It's just a glitch, but chilling nonetheless...

Yeah, Paper Mario's got a lot of darker stuff, especially TTYD.

Some of the death animations in Mario Galaxy tho... when Mario touches dark matter he's wiped from existence, electrified deaths turn him into a skeleton... you know, for kids!

I have two, I couldn't choose.

In Dream Team, there was a moment where Mario entered Luigi's subconscious, and inside of it, you saw things flying toward the screen that resembled Luigi, and what Luigi truly felt. Stuff mainly about how Mario is his biggest fan, and how he would do anything. Even referencing the times Mario has ditched him to go on an Adventure without him. It is not only sad, but heartwarming all in one big ball.

In Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, The Mushroom Kingdom is affected with "The Blorbs" which makes toads swell up to an enormous size, before exploding. How this is explained in the opening of the game is sad, and it is even hinted at that many have already passed away before the government finally stepped in. Really eerie stuff.
