Can guys become Alicorns?

Not sure if this was discussed before, but I'm curious...... can they? Not trying to lead this to a sexist discussion though, I just noticed all four are females and I'm wondering in the past, has there ever been a male one or is it possible

I'm pretty sure that a stallion could become an alicorn.  But, at the moment, there really aren't any good candidates for an upgrade.  The only currently existing characters I can think of that come even remotely close to being able to fill the role are Shining Armor and Fancy Pants.  They both seem to have strong leadership skills and a level of diplomacy to them, just not quite on the same level as Celestia or Luna.

Then there's King Sombra.

He might have actually come close to reaching alicorn status without the aid (or permission) of Celestia on his own.  It was stated that he was using alicorn magic but he was clearly a unicorn.  So it's quite possible that receiving that kind of power might have a corruptive element to it that not just any pony could hope to control.  Maybe that's also a prerequisite to becoming an alicorn; the spiritual strength to contain the power received during the transformation.

I think this is an interesting question, since every princess we've been made aware of so far is an alicorn, and the question has been asked of whether all princesses are alicorns or if all alicorns are princesses.  If the former is true, then it'd be simple to imagine that all princes are alicorns, too.  Except that Prince Blueblood exists, and he's a unicorn, not an alicorn.

My own opinion is that a stallion could become an alicorn through some process like the one Twilight underwent, but if one were to become an alicorn, would they automatically be called a prince?  Could an alicorn who is not royalty exist?

I'm sure they can, there's definitely proof of powerful male ponies who are cut out for the job like Starswirl for instance, although perhaps not as proficient in some areas as he would've liked to be. Shining Armor seems to be as well pretty cut out for high positioned jobs, honestly. It's definitely not shown that the princesses are perfect at what they do, so the odds and prerequisites are entirely impossible for them. We've got a lot more room to learn about them as ponies as well.

Adding a good sum of male characters in power would be somewhat defeating the female representation message Faust was initially going for. She wanted the pony world to send a good message about a female dominated government/authority specifically. It seems to be a little more than just a "little girl" themed addition for the target audience to relate to. I feel this is important due to our world being opposite to this ideal almost perceiving such a thing undesirable.

I think it's based on as as-needed basis.  It's been stated that Celestia and Luna were born as alicorns but Cadence was originally a pegasus that was transformed into an alicorn.  And we know what the deal is with Twilight, so I'd have to say that anyone being promoted to an alicorn is meant to fill an important position in Equestria's hierarchy.

These are interesting. (Sorry a little distracted I'll create a better response soon)

*nods* Thanks for the opinions guys!

Yeah so far I don't see any male candidates to ever be an Alicorn, but that's probably intentional (not in a bad way though) since the main focus are on the mane six. Maybe Starswirl was the closest to ever becoming one? But I heard he wasn't all into friendship or something...I forgot what was said but I'll learn myself once  I get my hands on the IDW comics.

Maybe Shiningarmor? Meh.....not sure. But I suppose many of the answers are "yes" to my question.

There was a story in the French MLP magazine from like 3 years ago that has a single pic from it you can find in a couple places on the internet (for a while I was asking around trying to see if anyone had more pics/info on the story, but looks like I got here a few years too late for something so obscure. >_>)

But check this out:

I don't see why not. On the other hand, Prince Blueblood isn't an alicorn, and neither is Shining Armor, who is also technically a prince. But I'm sure that if there was somepony worthy enough (so not Blueblood), they would become an Alicorn. Quite frankly, I'm surprised Shining Armor isn't one yet.

I imagine Cadence agreed with her husband to give him wings as soon as he dies so he can enjoy the life of a not alicorn.

I'd say so 100%. And the journal of the two sisters had celestia and Luna raised by other alicorns, so one would assume that their father was an alicorn.
Plus

The movie's plot script from the stolen e-mails to sony pictures had a male alicorn named cosmos as the villain, so its possible there might be a canon on in the future

You just need to realize there's so FEW alicorns, that the fact that there's no male one at the moment isn't really much proof against males existing. I mean you have 4 alicorns, over a period of over 1000 years. Its not like Ponies ascend left and right.

Princess Celestia considered making Starswirl the Bearded an alicorn. So I think they can be alicorns.

Source for that? I don't remember reading that anywhere.

I don't think they can but Starswirled the Bearded seem to be near equivalent in terms of magic power to them. Maybe even King Sombra since his overthrow didn't seem like a cakewalk for both Celestia and Luna.

For the universe's sake, ignoring merchandising, I would say that it's possible in very rare cases. However, in a matriarchal society a stallion would have to show a vast amount of initiative, character strength, and adhere to a disproportionately high standard of composure. Males in the show have been shown as either average at many things, not good at anything, strongly specialized at one skill while lacking the ability to do anything else proficiently, and/or shallow. The stallion would have to be so awesome that he'd be annoyingly non-relatable and a douche because, given what we've seen, a stallion wouldn't have gotten another shot after any "Lesson Zero" comparable behavior.

Of course dudes can become alicorns.  There could be natural born male alicorns, too.  Only reason we haven't seen any is because it's a female dominated show, which is nice because that's hard to find.  Most things are still male dominated.
