Would Nightmare Moon had ended the night at some point?

 

Let's say Nightmare Moon had won in an alternate universe. Darkness rains forever. However... as the months go by, the plants begin to die, temperatures drop to freezing levels like the arctic, ponies that even have shelter from the freezing cold begin to starve to death.

 

Would Nightmare Moon break down in grief after seeing the suffering the ponies are under going, with their dead piling up in mass graves? After the suffering she caused, she brings out the sun to restore life to Equestria. And raises and lowers said sun on a regular basis to fully restore life. 

 

Or would she sit on her icy throne and completely ignore the screams and cries of the ponies to see the sun again?

The whole reason behind Princess Luna's attempt to dethrone her sister and reign alone was because she felt that the ponies, who slept through the nights she worked so hard to create, weren't giving her the attention she felt that she deserved.

 

Without ponies to praise her, Luna's ambitions would have been undone.  So yeah, I think she would have returned sunlight to Equestria when she realized how much her subjects needed it to survive.  But Luna would not have let them forget that it was she who gave them this gift and would have demanded they worship her even more because of this.

Nightmoon spirit could lose it's hold over her. And as Luna, she would probably break down and cry over all the horrible things she done.

 

As Luna once again, a bony thin mother screaming at her as she hold her dead foal, died of starvation before before her throne would probably crush her heart.

Nightmare Moon seems to be the type of Queen who wouldn't mind ponies dying. They'd probably use magic and other things to create some food source so they can live.

I suppose it depends on how powerful the nightmare magic was. If the elements were completely necessary to drive out nightmare moon, then I don't believe she would ever bring back the sun. Otherwise, perhaps the amount of suffering would eventually cause at least part of Luna to return. Without a good knowledge of the magic's power though, I personally can't give a yes or no answer.

If she had her way, I don't think she would have ever ended it. Nighttime seems to be her ultimate thing and if she had the magic to do so with no opposition, I think she would keep it around for pretty much as long as she wanted to.
