My favorite Mario item is the feather from Super Mario World. It was a lot of fun, you could either fly through the entire stage off-screen or run through the stage rapidly spamming your cape force field.

I've always loved the cape feather from Super Mario World. It's fun to fly over and skip past large parts of levels

My favorite is the almighty Cape Feather from Super Mario World, that item is just so much fun to use. It was always the one I would aim to keep throughout the levels. Sure, the Fire Flower is useful beyond belief as well, but it is so much more fun to bounce your way through the level in the air. XD
