spoiler Celestia's not incompetent (aka Lilly Peet's being unfair)

I wouldn't say that Larson is a jackass. I never thought of him as part of this problem. Huh... Interesting. Do you have anything more about this?

But I sure like the second part of your post.

There was a tweet he made (I don't have it anymore), where he said that the less of Celestia we see, the better. Then there was something else about him saying since she's a mentor, she doesn't need to be around much.

Look, I think we're all thinking too deep into this. Celestia's not the main character; the Mane 6 are. Still, there's one thing we need to agree on: Celestia needs hugs. Badly. *hugs Celestia*

Episode 100 had nothing to do with the mane 6 though...

Not being a main character doesn't excuse wastefulness. I mean, Rarity and Spike's relationship isn't  the core of the show, but that has gone no where, for example.

But if I would have my way, Celestia would be taking part in the big fights and in the resolution of whatever was cropping up around "Gandalf style": putting things in motion, coming around when things are getting crazy, and if she's not around is because things are crazier somewhere else and all is going to hell if something is not done. If it was up to me, I wouldn't have her solve the problems by herself (a few small ones, yes, because I think she needs that) but she would be a big part of the resolution AND she'd be in charge, telling others what to do, while she's doing her part.

I thought this direction would've been obvious for the show, but I guess the creative team didn't figure that out or whatever.

Hm, hopefully a picture of that tweet could be found somewhere... I'd like to see if that's what he really said.

Isnt McCarthy the boss? No matter what Larson thinks, she has the final say?

He better may stay away from a possible Celestia Episode, then. Thats for sure. You dont need haters and Luna fans for that. -.-

That's disheartening. But I think I think understand where he's coming from. He thinks of Celestia as "hero of another time" and as someone that right now has very important things to be doing. The problem with that is it worked before Equestria had two princesses more than what was needed and when we never really saw a princess getting directly involved. Now that see Luna, Cadance and Twilight putting their hooves into solving problems, it just makes Celestia look like she isn't doing anything, because the other princesses are supposed to be as involved as she is in running the country (at least Luna and Cadance), but still find time to be involved.

This is bad in another way too: it breaks the importance of princesses as the wise rulers of Equestria because we're supposed to think of Twilight as their equal. Yet Twilight is always screwing up because if things get fixed too early, there is no episode. Except putting the character to a real challenge takes thinking and dedication. The result is the lazy mess that are episodes like "The Hooffields and the McColts" where Twilgiht is striped of her intelligence and the other characters are striped of their common sense. Another example "Princess Spike". Here is another example that the problem isn't Celestia. The problem are the goddamn writers that can't make a character sound wise without making the entire universe around them stupid!

In my opinion, this hurts the narrative coherence like hell: I don't have a clue about what are princesses supposed to be in Equestria right now.

Meghan McCarthy was the executive producer for a time (i think).  But the production staff and direction keep changing around. Names that stuck are Jim Miller, Jayson Thiessen, and Denny Lu. These are names that the fandom don't usually latch on, but they are the guys that say what is the direction things should go and have influence over the script for episodes.

For dumb, self-important fics about mythology, ponies and fascist griffons that can't figure friendship out.

And I'm just getting started.

I'm making this topic out of response to Lilly Peet (aka Jerry Peet)'s recent "Down With Celestia" video where he rips the character a new one over apparent incompetence and stupidity over certain decisions, particularly in relation to her actions in the Season 4 finale. For those of you who wish to view the vid, I've posted it below:

Honestly, I think Lilly's talking out her ass here. In relation to the Discord and Sombra events, Celestia clearly tasked Twilight and her friends in taking care of those matters as she felt they could handle it. The Tirek incident, however, is something far different: I think Celestia prepared for that FAR more in advance than most people give her credit for.

Let me ask a question: if you were over 1,000 years old and have seen attacks and betrayals like this happen many times, wouldn't you plan ahead to counter them? Also, Celestia clearly knew Discord, while reformed, was still very fickle and would definitely fall prey to the machinations of someone like Tirek if such an opportunity happened. That, and Twilight's constant verbal abuse towards Discord during most of that season, deserved or not, certainly furthered this being inevitable. So why would Celestia send HIM of all beings out to find Tirek? Simple: SHE KNEW MOST OF THE EVENTS IN "TWILIGHT'S KINGDOM" WOULD HAPPEN!

Now, I don't mean this in a "she can see into the future" sort of way. I mean more as in an "intuition from past experiences" sort of way (i.e. a gut feeling). As mentioned earlier, Celestia clearly knew Discord would side with Tirek if the opportunity arose and needed to act. She probably knew about the Rainbow Powers in the chest from many years back and counted on them being used as a last resort. The only thing Celestia probably wasn't counting on happening was Twilght's tree getting destroyed, as that was merely collateral damage.

However, then there comes the controversial (to Lilly Peet, anyway) of Celestia and Luna giving Twilight the rest of the Alicorn magic so that Tirek couldn't take it from them. Many people accuse Celestia of incompetence for this act simply because they think she was acting out of fear and could clearly take Tirek on in a fight if she wanted to. After all, Tirek was nothing more than a jacked-up bully; he wouldn't been able to steal magic that easily if his targets ended up putting up a huge fight like Twilight did, which is why he resorted to blackmail Twilight to forfeit the Alicorn magic when their fight later began to put him on the losing side. But honestly? Celestia had no choice than to do so. Even IF she and Luna fought Tirek instead, he'd eventually find a way to beat them and take their magic anyway. And even if they hid it somewhere else, like say in a certain object or container, he'd still find it and get it far easier.

Simply put, it was a no-win situation, and I don't like how certain Bronies, ESPECIALLY Lilly Peet, hold Celestia over the fires for stuff that she couldn't do much about and call her incompetent. I find it very unfair, and considering we barely saw her AT ALL in Season 5, I don't think the writers haven't been given any time at all recently to give Celestia her own episode to counteract any of these accusations. Here's hoping Season 6 addresses these claims!

Thoughts?

So...

Why did she not tell anypony about this?

Why did she always use Twilight as the forefront, not the backup?

Maybe because the Script Gods came from Hasbro and told her, "Hey, we're creating a show about your kingdom, and we want you to rely on Twilight Sparkle a lot more often, or else WE WILL DESTROY THIS UNIVERSE you got that ktnxbye"?

Seems like you're putting on a tinfoil hat that covers your entire head.

First of all, if she is so powerful, how did Chrysalis  beat her so easily in A Canterlot Wedding? Second of all, if she can anticipate attacks, than why is Equestria constantly endangered because her methods of imprisonment failed? Episodes like Return of Harmony and Crystal Empire would never have happened if Celestia had been a little more focused on her security measures.

I get this feeling a lot of Larson's focus is on the male characters of the show and giving them more importance overall so he might seem more dismissive towards the matriarchal side of things like Celestia.

I have purged 16 off-topic posts that turned into a torch fight.
This does not please me.

Do remember that, when a post should not be posted, your best course of action is to report the post through the report feature, and walk away.

Now that the thread has been purged, let the actual conversation about the topic resume.

I generally avoid analytical videos and whatnot. I don't really care what the analysts think most of the time, because they're often quite negative. I think Dr. Wolf is the only one who is pretty positive, and even then, his opinions are just his. I may find some amusing, but his opinions hold no sway over me, just like LillyPeets opinions hold no sway over me. I know what I like, I know what I don't like, and other people having opinions does not change that.

TL;DR;
I have no opinion on this topic, or lillypeets video. D:
