friendship games Sunset Shimmer

So how many people really like her? Or in fact, does anyone dislike her? For one I'm not a big fan because of the way everyone just got over her so easily and seemingly forgot everything bad she did. Also, her super form, that was a bit Mary Sue.

I think starlight glimmer was more easily forgiven than sunset shimmer, though that's kinda what the show does, maybe it's getting a bit lazy in how people are reformed? IDK. I do like sunset though, I just wish she was in the actual tv show and not just eqg

I think Sunset Shimmer is a great character. Sometimes if a person can admit that were wrong and turn to good that's a really positive thing. There's a lot of people I know who are to afraid to admit they were wrong and also admit they need help. Also why I like Luna and Trixie.

To be completely honest, Sunset Shimmer is probably one of my least favourite characters in the entire series. I don't downright hate her, but I certainly dislike some aspects of her.

More specifically, she really feels like a carbon copy of Twilight Sparkle -- they're the leader of a group, they were once students of Princess Celestia, they're both geeky and research the magic of friendship, you name it. But what Sunset lacks is distinctive flaws. Sure, she was once very nasty to everybody in Canterlot High, but all of that was completely forgotten in Friendship Games. There, she did all of the problem solving, all of the saving and has never brought any tension within the Human Five. With Twilight however, she has proven that she isn't always right or even good at her talents. We've seen episodes like Swarm of the Century or Lesson Zero in which Twilight is in the midst of losing her mind and has used magic spells that have completely backfired. Not only does it make Twilight a more believable character, but it also makes the audience easy to relate with her struggles.

That being said however, I really do feel as if Sunset once had tapped potential. Rainbow Rocks was her time to shine, and while her redemption wasn't the greatest, it has at least given her the chance to show what she can do best. Unfortunately, all of that potential for her to be a really good character seemed to be completely forgotten in Friendship Games.

Don't take it personal, but Sunset is probably the most overrated character in the G4 universe and that includes all the official media (FiM, EQG, The Comics)

For somebody that has so fast development jumps from Bully in the first movie, to underdog in the second movie to finally Twilight Sparkle 2.0 in the third movie, it is truly amazing how big the fanbase actually is.

I don't hate her BTW. Just not appealing and very overrated.

Couldn't agree more.

My least favourite characters in the whole of MLP history are

Starlight Glimmer

Sunset Shimmer

Trixie

Rainbow Dash

And now, Flurry Heart

Don't judge me :3

Those are just the charectersgodmodding that get let off so easily and are either over powered or think they are the best which really annoys me lol.

Oh, and princess Celestia might be next on the list. Luna is love, luna is life 0_0

I don't dislike her. But ultimately she is what she is, the (now) main character in a spin-off that is increasingly detached from, and yet still heavily dependent upon, it's parent franchise.

The reformation of villains in FiM is usually a little too quick, but this can be explained away by the need for expedient resolution in a twenty two minute format TV program. In the EQG films they had the room to try something more substantial with Sunset, but by the start of Rainbow Rocks, her transgressions were largely forgiven. Although Sunset seemed to have some difficulty in forgiving herself, and struggled to find her place in the 'huMane six' the rest of the school seemed to have a 'that was soooo last week' type of attitude to her past.

I'm probably being overly harsh, I am after all an adult looking at a film that is intended for young children, but I feel that the whole EQG thing could have been so much more than just an animated High School Musical rip-off. I don't mind the EQG films, I've seen all three and will no doubt watch the next as well. I am kind of glad however that they have made no attempt to integrate EQG into the FiM universe, there's nothing to be gained by doing so.

Drifted off topic a bit there, Sunset as a character is okay, great design and interesting story, but she has no place in Equestria. Her sole purpose is to be the one thing that separates EQG from FiM and makes it distinct, and hat's how it should remain.

I am going to try and be objective here, but fail miserably:

I see Sunset as a great character potentially. After the first film and the EQG comic, I was kind of really liking her because she is a villain that is very close to home... For Twilight. Sunset is what Twilight would have became if she did not learn to make friends. She represents Celestia's shortcomings as well, and her failure. It made Celestia a much more relatable character to see her failures and regrets within Sunset. Celestia looked at her and saw only a monster that she created. In my head, that is why I surmised she sent Twilight to face her and didn't just go herself. Celestia is ashamed of her mistake and couldn't bear to face it. She felt that Twilight could show her more than Celestia could. For me, that set Sunset up to be a great character.

Before the second movie aired, they had a nice little ad campaign where they did that song with Sunset, "My Past is Not Today" and that song made me think that the second film was going to be all about Sunset redeeming herself and it looked like a great idea. Then the film came out and it was very light on that subject because it focused too much on Twilight's role and thus Sunset was pushed into the background.

I held out hope for the third film and once again, Sunset's entire subplot of her internal conflict of not feeling like she belongs was completely cut from the movie.

So in the end I feel like Sunset is a character that has this great potential to be an awesome character, but Hasbro keep pushing her aside to make room for more Twilight even though Twilight's role at this point is unnecessary. Twilight is supposed to kind of be the mentor to her now, but she is still trying to be the star of the show. The third film even had to make another Twilight so that there was no chance of Sunset just getting the stardom for a minute so she could evolve. I mean the best part of the third film was that Sunset comes full circle and teaches the other Twilight a lesson, but it's so minuscule in comparison to what they could have done with her.

So I like Sunset as a character, and I see a lot of potential with her, but it's just that the potential is not being utilized.

you clim twi and Sun are carbon copies, but you yourself go on to list their differences. Contradiction, much?

Anyway...

Sunset HAS flaws. She still has anger issues which was what led her to snap at SciTwi. She has insecurity about finding answers on her own, which was why she was relying on Pony Twi to tell her what to do, every time she tried reaching her through the book, In Friendship Games. She puts more impotance on situations if they're magical, insted of seeing that non magical events can be important to others.

T1hree flaws right there

why wouldn't villains who show willingness to turn themselves around be forgiven? Would you want someone to keep mistrusting you, if you were making an honest efort to change and be a good berson?

Are not two the elements of harmony KINDNESS, and GENEROSITY?

I didn't really like sunset when she was a Mean GirlTM not just because she was mean but because she just didn't act in a very unique and interesting way.

Now I like her. Now she is interesting and, while still not perfect really tries to do the right thing and support her new friends. Actual friends this time. Not Henchmen 1 and 2. The message of forgiveness and reformation that is shown with her character is quite close to my heart.

As an aside, I like the differences that are shown between her and Celestia's other padawan, Twi. Twilight is more of a theory student of magic while Sunset likes practical demonstrations and investigations. (see science of magic short) Much like the difference between real scientists and mathematicians.

Sunset Shimmer is my favorite cartoon character.

To me she was even the most interesting character in the first Equestria Girls movie (okay, there were Twilight, Rainbow Dash and the other Rainbooms, who were basically the Mane6, and Flash Sentry, so that was not that hard to be honest...) but unfortunately she was not shown so often.

I like her so much because she is the character I can identify the most with, but in some way also a character I can learn from.

Or in fact, does anyone dislike her?

*raises hand*

Easily the most overrated character in anything FiM related. As a villain, she was the most braindead and poorly-written. Her characterization since has boiled down to non-stop angst with a bit of Mary Sue-ness on the side, given how she can easily pull expert skills out of thin air (So I'm expected to believe that one of the dumbest villains in the series actually had near genius-level intellect the whole time? Give me a break.  >_>)

Furthermore, at the end of the day, the humane five may as well be replaced with a bunch of random one-time characters, considering how little they matter in comparison to her. They get no development to speak of---and any development in these films go directly to Sunset and Twilight.

She still has anger issues which was what led her to snap at SciTwi.

Actually, she was completely justified in snapping at SciTwi. The movie wouldn't have you believe that, but she was.

Do not forget that she has trouble to forgive herself and I personally hope that this will not change so fast, even though it should not be so much in the focus like it was in RR or FF.

Another thing -

Who thinks she's an alicorn now? Personally I think "My past is not today" is just a display of her new found magic.

"My past is not today" was only a visual metaphor and this got confirmed.

One part of me believes that she is an alicorn, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Same :) they did release a sunset shimmer doll equipped with wings which is, I guess, what kicked everyone off

That belongs to the book "Sunset Shimmers Time to Shine".

There is also a part in it that describes that Rarity made it for a concert.

I freaking love Sunset Shimmer, second best pony! Thought I do sort of see her as pretty much a red and yellow colored Luna (Which actually makes a weird sense since they both had redesigns but I digress) Anyways I really do like that she had to work for her redemption in Rainbow Rocks and that even Twilight Sparkle was hesitant to take her hand when she offered it and how she had to work to gain their full trust.  And I like how her story came full circle in Friendship Games, as well as her emotional outburst on the track towards Sci-Twi. Also she went Super Saiyan!!!!!!! (Okay massive DB fan here, sue me) Can't wait to see more of her!  So yeah I am a fan of her's through and through.

Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end.
