rainbow rocks What Do You Guys Think Of Rainbow Rocks?

Personally, it was "eh" to me. There were a lot of plot holes and just seemed a bit rushed on my part, especially since the Dazzligns just walked offstage at the end and were never heard from again, I felt that there could've been a more unique villain defeat.what did you guys think of it?

I think it was way better then the first movie and I enjoyed it but the pop/rock songs weren't all that great (besides the dazling songs and the last song) but I thought it was pretty ok.

I covered that in my three-part review for it:

  1. http://mlpforums.com/blog/91/entry-14601-equestria-girls-rainbow-rocks-review-part-13/
  2. http://mlpforums.com/blog/91/entry-14559-equestria-girls-rainbow-rocks-review-part-23/
  3. http://mlpforums.com/blog/91/entry-14602-equestria-girls-rainbow-rocks-review-part-33/

To make it short:

Positives: Better animation. Tighter story. Better musical variety rather than the generic teen pop tune from the first. Took plenty of time to develop Sunset's character and redemption. The scene in the Pie's kitchen is by far the best in all three films. No fan pandering. Very subtle use of foreshadowing in the background during Let's Have a Battle — Vinyl never takes off her headphones while the others listen. Welcome to the Show — best EQG song outside of Shine Like Rainbows and best EQG climax.

Negatives: Forced exposition. Poorly-written comedy. Contradicting their lone source of continuity — the portal being closed — by using a lazy joke as a DEM to break it. Not addressing existing plot holes and even lampshading them poorly (Dash replies, "Who cares why it happens!" after being asked why they pony up). Sunset's the butt of very abusive comedy that got old before they were stated. Dazzlings are flat villains with very poor motivations. Flash is even flatter here. The HuMane Six are flanderized (Rarity, AJ, and Dash to the point of being out of character), and Spike's role was reduced to more expository status. Sunset's path to redemption is backed by a complete character reset thanks to the Elements changing her to the Sunset they want her to be; as a result, Sunset-in-name-only's challenges and goals lack genuinity.

It's objectively better than EQG1 (which is a pile of shit), but nowhere close to being a good film, either.

I really like it. Compared to its predecessor, the animation, music and villains were all big improvements, and I loved the new characterization of Sunset Shimmer as well. It has some typical high school movie cliches, and at times it's a bit too mean-spirited for its own good, but I still like it a lot.

I thought is was far superior to its predecessor.

It had good character development for Sunset after the rushed ending and forgiveness she was given at the end of the first film.

I found the songs in it to actually be enjoyable and memorable this time around-only the ones by the antagonists though, oddly enough.

As for the Dazzlings themselves, I really enjoyed Aria's frequently annoyed attitude, found Sonata to be an annoying Pinkie Pie clone in terms of character, and Adagio herself felt pretty 'meh' as a leader, I liked their songs, though-but, I felt it was extremely stupid and irresponsible of Starswirl just to fling them into the human world like 'They're your problem now, suckers!' and made wonder if maybe my headcanon about him actually being a jerk only remembered for his achievements is true.

The distrust of Sunset made complete sense to me consider what she did and what she tried to do in the first film-like have the entire student and staff members of the school be altered into their equine counterparts with their abilities going after going through the portal to usurp the throne from Celestia as well as trying to straight up murder Twilight by throwing a magical blast at her.

I thought the comedy was terrible, though.

It's definitely better than EQG1, but that doesn't make it good.

They definitely stepped up the animation, the plot was tighter, there were less "deus ex" moments, less "trop-ey" moments (although I guess playing in a band to win a competition is kinda... ehhh...) and I thought the pacing was much better. And they had Trixie!

Okay, side note here, I love Trixie, but I hated her in the movie. I always thought of her as not really a "villain", more of just a side character with an overblown ego. Even in Magic Duel, all of her actions were just an attempt to bring more fame to herself, without really being malicious. Twilight had humiliated her, and she wanted revenge. But in this movie, she's just... I dunno, mean for the sake of being mean, and I really didn't like that.

Overall, it's a "meh" movie. Definitely not the best out of the trilogy, but it's mountains better than the first.

Aside from a questionable portrayal of Rainbow Dash and not enough of best Dazzling(Aria), I enjoyed it

Also, the movie made me appreciate Trixie more as an antagonist

I really like RR, and it's my favorite of the three EQG movies. Everything's a huge step up from the first movie and Sunset got some really good character development. My main issue with it is the plot hole regarding their magic coming out when they play music, especially since that also happens when they play alone. See, I could imagine it happening because playing as a band requires a certain harmony which would bring out the magic or something, but as it stands it just doesn't make sense...and they even pointed that out, then dismissed it in the movie itself.

Despite that, though, I still think it was really enjoyable, and the final battle was seriously awesome.

BEST EG MOVIE! Honestly, friendship games had a VERY spacey and weak plot that really didn't make any sense... I am not a huge fan of the EG movies all together because they are rushed... they could have spread the first one out into at least two movies. And I am SO sick of the whole "I was totally evil 5 min ago but now I want to be best friends" ending. It happened with Sunset Shimmer, Starlight glimmer, and even SciTwi (unintentionally evil) so I think that the dazzlings actually had the most UNIQUE ending. Plus, the music is absolutely amazing!!

After watching an actual high school rock band anime K-On, I'm going to give this movie a resounding one time watch.

Them being in a rock band was just tact on and the whole competition was irrelevant. If a movie involves an actual Battle of the Bands, the competition needs a clear definite winner and not fall to the wayside for more of dangerous Equestrian magic shenanigans.
