What do you think is the average lifespan of a pony?

In the real world the average lifespan for a pony is 20-30 something years, do you think it's the same for the ponies in Equestria or do you think they are more unique in their lifespans?

Well, considering Granny Smith was around since the founding of Ponyville, apparently, I'm pretty doubtful they only live for 20-30 years on average. Unless Granny's secretly an Alicorn too, or something.

I like to headcanon they live about 110-120 years on average. Just seems like a good long life to me. Of course, some can live longer or shorter depending on their health.

In my headcannons, regular ponies (Earth ponies, Pegasi, Unicorns, Crystal pones, Zebras, Batponies and stuff) live around 150/200 years, beacuse of magic and stuff. Changelings live around 25/40 Years and their queen in immortal. "Natural" alicorns, so only the sisters, live around 5 000 years. Artificial alicorns have the same lifespan as regular pones. (In human years, I forgot to say)

About two centuries considering Granny Smith's life unless she is equivalent of Jeanne Calment of MLPFIM. However, this is something to consider. For how long are female ponies capable of reproducing? I ask this because isn't Granny Smith supposed to be Applejack's grandmother rather than, say, her great, great, great, great, great grandmother? So would this mean that mane6 could very well be closer to being 50 years old rather than common understand of them being in 20s? Unless mane6 being 20 years old is actually more like being equivalent of being 20 years old in their universe.

I'd say that their life spans are equivalent to human with Alicorns and those weirdo crystal ponies as exceptions. Granny Smith always mentions moons a lot for events. I haven't done the math with that but others have and it seems to go with our time/development based on some of flashback scenes (one in particular with Applejack).

I've done thinking on this for a while.

Look back when Sweetie Belle was 5 compared to now. I also estimate Rarity to be 16-18 at that point.

Also back when Applejack got her cutie mark Big Mac was smaller and Granny was old looking even then. I take It Apple Bloom was an infant at that point. Spike and the CMC are the same age (him being hatched at the Sonic Rain Boom.)

Haha... If you told me 3 years ago that I would write a post like this discussing rainbow colored talking horses I'd be Scootaloo was here in Lesson Zero.

Probably the same as their human equivalents from EG. The only thing that messes up that theory are the alicorn sisters. Celestia and Luna are supposed to be over a thousand years old, yet in the human world they seem younger than Granny Smith. Are they immortal in that world or were they just born at a later time with regular human lifespans? It seems unlikely two extremely long lived individuals would be stuck as high school principals. This is one of the biggest issues with EG: The fact that they take us from a magical world of ponies and mythical creatures to some bland modern world setting. It would have been better to have just used a humanized Equestria equivalent while still keeping all the magic, dragons, griffons etc.

MLP makes almost no mention of time, age, birthdays and especially not death. A fact that helps maintain a sense of timelessness on the show to some extent but irritates me greatly in many respects.

The question is unlikely to ever be categorically answered in the canon of the show. I think the writers have made a point about that.

I see them more like "human years"... like the mane 6 are in their late teens (flutter shy is older so sh'e probably in her 20's) , the CMC are 8-10 maybe... i mean... we see REALLY old ponies in the show so I just always thought of it like that.

I think it's roughly the same as ours. I think us vs other apes should the the same as real life ponies vs MLP ponies, with longer life spans being one of them

Ponies live for at least a few hundred years. Where people are getting this idea they only live 100 years or less is silly.

Evidence 1: Granny smith has been around since the founding of ponyville, which was several hundred years ago. Please note that no pony finds that strange what so ever.

Evidence 2: The Doctor says he is a couple hundred years old to Derpy, whom doesn't even bat an eye at this information. That means he's younger than granny but still rocking triple digits in his age. One can only Guess how old Granny Smith is knowing that.

Evidence 3: Pinkie Pie in her very detailed and meticulous party cave has parties planned out hundreds of years in advance.

-Pinkie has notes on the party she wants to throw for her folks 50'th anniversary, But they ain't nearly that old....and their 100th? and their 500?

Nobody really bats an eye at the ages, just how far Pinkie plans in advance.

knowing this, Its pretty safe to assume that Granny is somewhere in the upper 400's while the doctor is somewhere in the 200 range. Alicorns age slower than other ponies, but clearly longevity isn't that strange in Equestria.

I think when writers created Equestria they didn't think about it. And In my opinion, all things which are not described explicitly similar to same things in our world (if they exist). So we have two options:

- similar to real life pony

- similar to average unit of society (human)

We can see that first is too short. So I think that their lifespan is similar to human.

Also, Sunset Shimmer and Twilight Sparkle are the same age and as human and as pony even if Sunset lived as human big part of her life. It shows that age processes are similar for human and magic pony.

I could see this, it also explains why Celestia and Luna live for so long, if they aren't immortal.

I see the ponies living very long lifespans, thanks to magic. All ponies seem to be connected to magic and I feel like that gives them a distinct advantage for longevity.

Exactly. The Alicorn Princesses still age pretty slowly in comparison to ponies, but immortal they are not. This also puts into perspective that tweet about Twilight not outliving her friends, because ponies live for hundreds of years regardless.

All of those sounds like they can be tongue and cheek.

Remember shows like this still tries to relate the settings to what we can understand. Like why are ponies using human tools when they don't have hands? Probably because if they use tools befitting pony hooves the audience would not be able to relate to it so well.

I do so enjoy pony lifespan theories. The way I see it, the absolute upper-most lifespan of a normal pony can be nearly a thousand years. Bear with me on this one while I try to make my case.

So, let's start at the beginning. Granny Smith had a direct hoof in the founding of Ponyville, which Twilight says to have been "hundreds" of years previous. I take that on pure speculation to be anywhere between 200 and 500 years. Now, let's take the fact in Granny's flashback in Apple Family Reunion, she looks to be about Applejack's age then while Auntie Applesauce is elderly. Flashforward to the present, Auntie Applesauce is still alive, showing that she's got "hundreds" of years on Granny Smith, which would make here between 400 and a thousand years old. Potentially, Auntie Applesauce could've been alive for the banishment and return of Princess Luna.

Now, I realize that this is pure speculation, but it does make one think. It certainly puts an Alicorn's lifespan into questionable perspective. Personally, I believe that all Alicorns are functionally immortal, living for tens of thousands of years, if not hundreds of thousands or even millions of years. After all, Celestia and Luna have not aged a day in well over a thousand years. If a thousand years is a blink of an eye to them, then they are functionally immortal to the perspective of an average pony, even if their upper limit lifespan is a thousand years.

Remember how the seasons are weird in the show not quite sure there aren't twice as many earth wobbles on their planet or somehting, so they might live for a similar amount of planetary rotations but they could be implied to last multiple times longer. It is a different planet after all.
