it's always fun to see technicians and programmers being creative with hardware and modding consoles to run other program systems. And last time it gave me an question; Is it possible to mod a PS4/Xbox One to run Windows 7?

I think it could be possible since, especially, PS4's components are compatible with Direct3D and the hardware architecture is almost familiar with the PC. And recently the PS4 got jailbreaked to run Linux without problems.

How about you? Do you love to do/see others experimenting with hardware/software?

With a bit of modding to the Windows 7 interface and a full understanding of the PS4's/Xbone's Operating system paired up by a full Jailbreaked system, Maybe.

But sadly we don't have all the things I listed above fully realized yet, As it may take years to get those parts and to have them easy to access for the average user may take even longer. No doubt it will start out buggy and glitchy and to fix that it may take even longer.

Basically I'm saying yes! But it won't be possible for a very long time....

Since the consoles run on the basic x86 arch, they more than likely could run them, but it would require a lot of modding to make it possible. I do minor mods to my system, but nothing to give me any kind of illegal gameplay advantages. Like I modded my controller to put in a larger battery, and such.

Does that count as console modding? I think that's illegal, but I'm not sure it counts...  I don't know anything about this stuff.

Yes it is illegal, But if you're running a console with windows 7, no one will notice.

This is quite right, It will take an extremely long time before this is made, Yet alone easy to access for the public........We need to mod everything from the version of Windows 7 to the Console's OS, Not to mention messing with drivers can be dangerous at time....

By the time we get it however, Windows 7 will be out of support probably and it will most likely be based on 8 or higher. Most likely windows 10 as Xbone is a more minimalistic version of that.

Honestly with how windows is designed, And it's anti-privacy measures. It probably won't be a version of windows at all. And will likely be a version of Linux designed for the console, With either the Ubuntu or Debian Architecture.

I used to dabble with psp cfw and stuff. I lost intrest after a n64 emulator crashed and deleted all my games.

Thinking of going back to it because of a lamecraft mod. And also, I want to make psp games.

Not sure tho .~.

N64 emulation on portables is still very primitive sadly. However I will say that to this day the PSP is my favorite handheld for emulators because of how well designed it is. Plus having the guts of a PS1 in it meant that PS1 emulation (obviously limited by the game not requiring dualshock) on the go was possible. And for how cheap it was, it was a win win. If you still have one, I would recommend using the HEN mod this time around. It's basically a "safer" and easier way to mod them now.

Also I have been following the Dragonbox Pyra which is a German made sequel to the OpenPandora emulator and I can't wait for this thing to come out. Supposedly will support PS2 emulation on a portable device.

It is interesting to see what one can do with mods and such, though I have little to no knowledge of this kind of stuff. Even if I did, I wouldn't want to take the risk of destroying something. XD

I have a policy for when I do it: I mostly do it under the following conditions:

  • The mod is for a device connected to the main device such as a controller which is fairly cheaply replaced.
  • It's never a mod that would get the system banned from online services that are still active.
  • The warranty of the device is long expired.
  • The device is no longer serviced (i.e. a PSP which has been discontinued for nearly 5 years now).
  • I have a duplicate of the device (I had a few DSes back in the day).
  • The modification poses no threat to the device's functionality or warranty (such as a flash card for the DS)

I would like to add that emulation has just barely reached the 2000's on PC, This is why you don't really have a full speed emulator for IOS and Android Devices, However N64 and DS emulation are Heavily supported on phones as long as your willing to pay for a emulator that actually works.

Bonus: Remember when modding to be careful not to mess with anything dangerous or something not suppose messed with, Without trained experience, This is opening Batteries messing with power supplies..... Or anything along those lines!

Really, I see no difference with HEN and pro-cfw. I use a psp go so that makes it slightly safer as I can't Pandora battery or anything.

HEN is easily reversible, whereas custom firmware hard installed has to be removed through installation. HEN is less likely to brick your system.

Hmm. Well, I might hang on to the pro cfw for now. I think it was the rom that fcuked up.

Asked one of the technicians about modded consoles running DirectX systems and they gave the idea green light, but mentioned that it takes some time with making the OS compatible.

PSP, the love child of emulation. It sold even better than the PS Vita with 70 million copies worldwide :ooh:.

Pretty much, yeah. And no doubt that the moment you get the support, the console won't be able to play online anymore.

It had a freakin' PS1 inside of it! It was perfect for emulation at its time. It ran PS1 games and retro games relatively smoothly. It's still a decent option for portable emulation to this day, though smartphones are catching up.

But I don't need PSN or that kind of stuff, if you mean that with online.

You may need to go to Germany to do that depending on when you depart.

Back on topic; A modder replaced the New 3DS' C-stick with the PSP analog:

I was a bit clumsy with the stats of how much PSP's where sold :derp: . It actually sold more than 80 million copies. 10 times more than it's successor.

Is it possible to mod a PS4/Xbox One to run Windows 7?

This makes me wonder, why would you want to? The hardware in those consoles equates to maybe a mid-range PC, so you're better off just getting a mid-range pc with a USB controller if you want to.

I do like the concept of screwing around with software, though. I personally stick to modding games, but in the XP days I used a bunch of dll hacks to get a custom theme and a Start Button that said Dark Void to complement it.

All in all, though, I only do it if I have a goal in mind. If I see no point to it I won't bother.

Let's say because we can.

And I think the PS4 is still more powerful than my current PC.

It's more than likely possible. I mean I've seen an Xbox 360 run Windows XP.

Let's see if they can make Windows 7 run on the Xbox One. It could help giving the console some use ;).

I remember back in the day, I got a PSP for christmas in 2005 and made a foolish mistake of updating it to the latest firmware, and find that all the cool kids on the PlayStation forums were talking about homebrew. I wasn't happy that I couldn't run any of those homebrew apps because the latest OFW wouldn't allow it. After years of waiting, I finally installed CFW into my PSP.

I was successful in jailbreaking my iPad 2, though.

I find the concept of hacking into consoles and handhelds made for a single OS to be fascinating.
