Rarity Needs a Better Manager(s)

Its not a shot at Rarity, but given her track record so far, 1st with Canterlot and now with Manehattan, Rarity seems to have a lot of trouble managing her businesses properly. Of course wherever possible her friends offer a lot of help, but even by the show's standard I don't think we can expect the Mane 6 to bail out Rarity every time she needs it. Even in terms of actual managers, the one Rarity does have Sassy Saddles wasn't well chosen and lacked communication with Rarity.

Rarity no doubt is a great fashionista, artist, and person all around. But she has a tendency to over commit to promises she may or may not fulfill, poorly manage her scheduling, and among other things lose track of the bigger picture. :please:  Maybe, just maybe, if Rarity hired a reliable manager or agent to help her manage her fashion retail chain, she would excel even more at getting her brand out there while also perfecting her craft.

Rarity's in the big league's now. You gotta think bigger darling.

I agree. I mean, it's like she's setting up her businesses to fail. She didn't check the work background of Sassy, else she would've known how many times she was fired from all her former places of employment. She waits till the day before opening day of her Manehattan shop to renovate, set up displays, hire and background check her staff, or even do research on the location of her shop, else she would've known a wild club was upstairs (probably was what drove the former buiness into the hole, with the loud ruckus)

Rarity is a hot mess and so far has an awful track reord of managing anything other than her Ponyville shop, and even that looks sketchy (Art of the Dress, anyone?)

Even if she made mistakes during the beginning of the store's career, the problems end up getting fixed and her stores end up becoming very successful. It's not like we've heard of anything bad happening at the Canterlot store since Canterlot Boutique. She's kind of like a race horse that majorly stumbles at the beginning of a race, but ultimately still ends up taking the win. In the end, her track record is probably more impressive for the recoveries made.

Rarity's Just excited: She's new at this, remember. This is just the second time she's started a new location, she's not exactly highly seasoned in the big business world.

I think she can be forgiven for her mistakes, she'll learn with time and get better :D

Also, keep in mind that she expected Coco to help out too.

that's not an excuse. I highly, Highly doubt that she discovered her talent as a filly, and waited till the day before opening day, well into adult years, to get her Ponyville shop together. Stuff like that takes months to get in order. To wait till the day before is asinine and entirely unprofessional. What if photographers or journlists wanted to promote orbuild hype for the place weeks before the grand opening? All they'd have to show was a dirty old buildig of nothing. No background history checks on the staff RD hired. How does anypony even know if the shop is up to code standards, if everything was done last second?

It's reckless and damaging to her career to be so short sighted and spontaneous

As someone who has owned his own business and worked directly under C-Level executives ... I'll just sit back in 'cafe reality' and smile at the concept that what Rarity experienced is somehow unique and/or indicative of unsuccessful ventures.

Eli the Computer Guy is right. That is all I'm saying.

Rarity may be brilliant at designing dresses but this episode proves that she still has terrible businesspony skills. You'd think she would learn from her mistakes with her Canterlot store but she really rolled the dice by setting up the Manehattan store hours before it's scheduled to open.

At the end of the day. It may just be a matter of whether she has business skill or not. I see it as part of the moral of the episode. Rarity's approach may not always be the best solution, nor the rest of the Mane 6 for that matter. Sometimes its better to trust your intuition and do what you do best, and sometimes like in Suited for Success, its better to defer to someone who is more experienced.

Rarity's a great fashion designer with beautiful artistic vision. But she hasn't exactly proven to be the best manager. From conversations with my friends in real life designing sites and logos for artists, it can be a headache. They often change their mind frequently and on a whim and might not have a better grasp of the cost and time it takes to get things done. But this is fine. Some people are creatively oriented, like Rarity, while others are more business oriented and organized. As we saw already, Rarity had the foresight to hire Sassy Saddles as a manager for her Canterlot boutique.

If anything, Rarity delegating some of her work would make her business even better and allow her to focus on what she does best as a fashionista.  :rarity:
