additionally , you could also give it to studies like "curing cancer" or "Solar panel technology"  or whatever, But you can't give it to yourself, or companies that would benefit you by giving you money. and you can only grant it to ONE ...you can't split it.

Because most of the energy produced on earth is inefficient, wasteful, harmful, and will become obsolete once the natural resources used in the process are depleted.

 

That, or quantum computing. That thing will drive humanity to the space age, allowing more advanced applications such as AI to become reality.

I'd like it to go towards a program that helps under-privileged kids have the opportunity to go to college and/or university.  Who knows?  Maybe one of those kids will grow up to create the next big thing or breakthrough.

This. Cause, charities like Susan G. Komen and PETA, never put the money toward what they exist for. Maybe like 1% of it goes toward the cause they opened up for. The rest goes to themselves and their employees. So, I'm pretty much behind the idea of setting up my own charity and making sure the money actually goes where it needs to go. It's meant for research and/or helping those in great need of help.

Thing is, a billion dollars doesn't really go all that far.  I mean a company like spacex is worth $12 billion, and they aren't huge.  The NIH alone spends $6 billion on cancer research every year.  Half a billion on Alzheimers.  If you add up everyone's spending on those (which it seems the web HASN'T it would be magnitudes higher).

I'd love to assist in ridding the world of Cancer, Parkinson's and Alzheimers/Dementia related illnesses, all of which have afflicted my family members and friends over the years. I'd probably use the money to establish a charity to fight all of them, in collaboration with existing ones to create one supranational body that governs the research and finds a way to ensure all those ailments are cast into the medical history books.

I would make my own charity where the goal would be to help the lives of the poor in my city (I'd go for the whole country, but I don't think a billion would have a very big impact if it would be given for all). This is more or less where my charity would be. I'd fund those who are actually making housing for homeless (yes, like RV camps, but they are single room houses designed for the homeless) individuals and families (Unfortunately, I'm not sure if they're funded enough to do this for entire families). But, my charity would reach out to those and such like that.

I considered this as well but maybe not NASA. Depends on what the money would be used for and how. Not to speak badly of NASA but if a private company could do it better if they just had the funds I'd go with them instead.

I'd give money to more unpopular charities, such as guide dogs for the blind. Children charities and cancer research get enough money in my opinion. I'm not saying we don't need them, of course.
