cmarston1 5,962 January 30, 2017 Share January 30, 2017 Well for me, shipping is a fun away of taking character interactions from characters that I like in a particular show and imaging what they would be like if they were in a romantic relationship. As well as enjoying fan content inspired by that such as fanfictions, AMVs, and fan artwork. It's just a part of a fandom that I take lightly and use for fun.
That Guy with the CMB 5,876 January 30, 2017 Share January 30, 2017 Well, sometimes two characters are meant for each other. Take Chowder and Panini for example. c: 1 Romans 10:
Jeric 46,873 January 30, 2017 Share January 30, 2017 I must be the only one to hate this uber-popular aspect of fandoms. I'm really br sure why people "make" two characters be together. Human nature. We like to match make. We are quite capable of pattern recognition and identifion. We also enjoy treating fiction as a recipticle for our own hopes and dreams (including romance). It's older than you, me, my mother, and my grandmother. How do I know this? Because my gram preferred Ashley to Rhett for Scarlet. ... Also, this actually worked.

You don't have to get it. Shipping is not for everyone, and the fringe shippers can certainly make it seem unappealing. For me, Shipping is akin to fantasy football. Nothing is really happening in real life, but you are keeping score on little things that happen during the episodes or movies and see if you can collect enough shipping material for a proverbial touchdown known as the OTP. The more passionate characters are towards eachother, the more points you earn. The more physical contact characters have, even more points added. Its a game. People do tend to get obnoxiously serious about it, but in reality its all supposed to be in good fun. http://www.fimfiction.net/user/Billy%20G%20Gruff http://billyggruff.deviantart.com/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPVpSXbUpDYTcaFHTPiPjYA
Heavenly Inexplicit 309 January 31, 2017 Share January 31, 2017 (edited) Good Heavens! I thought that I was the only one! I mean, I don't look down on anyone for enjoying it, but it's something that I don't get, and sometimes it seems perverse to me. It's just not my thing you know? It's not something that I hate, it's something that I don't understand. Edited January 31, 2017 by Heavenly Sun Love and tolerate!
Cirrus. 1,093 January 31, 2017 Share January 31, 2017 (edited) "Shipping" has been more of a puzzling thing to me also. I don't hate it, I just wonder sometimes WHY it's as popular as it is. People like different things for different reasons is the best I can come up with I guess. Originally in High School, I wanted to go into some kind of digital animation/editing or something similar, but decided against it for various reasons. I've worked with flash and have more of an appreciation for the work put into the show because of it. I like MLP more for... the background stuff and how open the production staff is (cast/crew on social media and interviews) behind the scenes material fan art and animation. I guess this causes me to view the characters more as "puppets" rather than "beings" I don't know, I can't think of how else to explain it. Anyways, I tend to have more fun thinking of... what kind of character an actor/actress might be on the show (William Shatner seems to be teasing that he might be next.) what goofy thing the writers will come up with how off the tracks this show has gone (in a good way) VS. who a character might be in love with. That's just something I don't put much thought into. Fluttershy and Discord does amuse me a little though. It is kind of canon, so i don't even know if that even counts. Edited January 31, 2017 by Cirrus. Rainbow Rocks... at least how it could've looked... in a stranger, more interesting dimension For those who are wondering, Twilight is chewing bubble gum. TheLeastEvil 50 January 31, 2017 Share January 31, 2017 I think some people may like the character dynamics that can be played with when two characters are stuck in some romantic relationship. It is still a very curious situation because shipping happens massively in a lot of fandoms. It might be linked to some human desire to see people linked together and not left alone. [Theory] People identify with certain characters and want to live their dream relationships through them in some cases.
KatonRyu 1,034 February 14, 2017 Share February 14, 2017 I began shipping as a loser emo nerd out of wish fulfillment in lieu of a self-insert since I'd realized by then how much those tend to suck. From there, I began to enjoy looking for clues that two characters in a show might have an attraction to each other and thinking about maybe using those couples in fanfics. Nowadays, in most shows I watch I'll have two characters (ever since K-ON these tend to be female-only) I'd like to see as a couple. Bonus points if the ship I like gets some hinting done by the makers of the series. For instance, in RWBY I ship Blake and Yang mainly because of all the hints they've given about it. In MLP, an episode like Slice Of Life features several heavy hints to fan-favorite ships. As far as 'making' characters get together, that does have its limits for me. Characters who have no common ground or who are usually solely antagonistic aren't really shipping material for me and such ships, unless done extremely well, tend to piss me off. Tl;dr: it started as wish fulfillment for me and now I just enjoy thinking about the possibilities for fanfics.

FizzyGreen 909 February 14, 2017 Share February 14, 2017 It's quite simple, really. It looks cute and therefore makes people happy. "You are right Starlight, you are more talented in magic than me. But talent doesn't mean, that you are privileged to have more power. It's the heart! All you need, to have power, is a heart!"
GrimGrimoire 4,973 February 14, 2017 Share February 14, 2017 I don't really pay it any mind. It is a completely fan made thing for the most part and overall usually pretty easy to ignore. The only time it bothers me is when it is shoved in my face by someone as an actual fact instead of their own personal idea or dream. I have very rarely run across that though. A couple I have heard and seen I actually chuckle and can agree with, several though are just repulsive. ~No profound statement needed~
