Could Rock Solid Friendship tie with Gauntlet of Fire?

Today's episode with Maud, Pinkie and Maud went down to the mines where Rarity and Spike were digging for gems, the same mines in Gauntlet of Fire! And Rarity was wearing that same hat! Now Pinkie and Maud show up in the caves again later in the episode to discover the beautiful waterfall cave place, and Rarity and Spike were nowhere to be found. Plus Twilight is completely absent in this episode! So does that mean that the events of Gauntlet of Fire might've happened during Rock Solid Friendship?

Hm. May be proven unlikely by some dialog here, but that is a nifty theory when you think about it.

The show isn't always linear and it has played loose with timing in the past, though I don't think they did season jumping like this. Usually it is weather or season related tomfoolery. ;)

I'd say it's more likely that Spike and Rarity went there was a recurring thing since Gauntlet of Fire, and they weren't there when they discovered that waterfall because Maud had evaluated all the gems as common that Rarity lost her will to use any more. Because the way the two talk at the beginning of Gauntlet of Fire would not make sense given how Rarity is no longer affected by what Maud said despite the visuals in Rock Solid Friendship saying otherwise. And the fact that there were no bats at all in Rock Solid Friendship despite them being right there in Gauntlet of Fire.

Alright, that makes sense. But I woulda thought Spike knew the "bodyguard" thing was a phony by now! XD What's Rarity's lie this time?

Why does there need to be a lie? Rarity probably only said that bodyguard thing to make Spike feel more enthusiastic about his role, but she probably knows that either way he'd still agree to help out anyway because it's mining for gems, his favorite snack which she can lend a few to him as a reward. They've done this since A Dog and Pony Show back in season 1.
