Is the show changing focus?

Absolutely. This isn't even the first time. The first season was more or less Twilight-centric, then it evolved to focus more on the rest of the Mane 6 + CMC, then Starlight's redemption arc signaled another change.

Given how many episodes this season, including that of ones that haven't aired yet focus on secondary characters, I do feel like the show is changing who it focuses on.

Seems that way. One thing to be noticed, is that Starlight got plenty of spotlight in the very first episodes of this season. I also feel like the cuties are getting more spotlight also; even in Paternal Glideance, where it feels like Scootie got more protagonism rather than Dashie. While there are some episodes focused on the standard Mane6, it is a but deluded compared to previous seasons

As much as people might not like it, but this is pretty much the end goal right here. Starlight will be the new Twilight Sparkle with her own team of friends.

After all, Hasbro needs new toys to market.

Thank you Randimaxis for this Wonderful Avatar. smile.png

Please, don't be afraid to talk to me. I am not as unapproachable, as you might think.

They can't continue to rely on the same core cast of characters all the time as that would result in things becoming stale, predictable, and redundant. By focusing on the secondary characters and those who haven't been seen in forever, they can take the show in new directions that weren't possible before. This method does pose a drawback in that some feel that the main characters are being pushed aside, but after all these years, perhaps it's time for a change and one that the fandom would appreciate.

Like changing a light bulb, huh? If only things were that easy. New characters can serve this purpose and maybe one day they shall. However, this batch is unworthy. Hail Hydra.

The show appears to be gradually increasing the focus of secondary characters and even the CMC who will have likely had a greater focus this year than any prior year.

I'm ok with that in a sense. Things in life evolve, and it would be highly interesting to see these life changes represented on this show. I've long supported season long arc where the Mane Six find their interests taking them away from Ponyville for longer periods, allowing writers some more freedom with the stories that they want to tell.

We kind of got that in Season 5 and on, but imagine if Fluttershy wants to build sanctuaries all over Equestria. Imagine how larger Rarity could expand. What happened if Rainbow Dash becomes leader of the Wonderbolts? What if Spike grows and Twilight and him become Ambassadors of Friendship outside of Equestria.

Life pushes us in directions we shouldn't be afraid to travel. If the final seasons of this show have that as it's theme, I'm in.

Twilight was clearly the main character of Celestial Advice, even if it was in part about Starlight. (Still refuses to believe that the Mane Six can no longer grow as characters)

I agree with this. The mane six are still receiving a lot of episodes not involving Starlight, and while Starlight is an increasingly prevalent part of the show, it'd be sad if other characters who still have so much potential were phased out because of it. Starlight is simply one of many characters in the show's expansive ensemble cast.

Kind of but not so much, given all the synopsis's we have this season Starlight basically is getting like 6 episodes assuming the finale is about her, which isn't too crazy. If anything the CMC are being thrust into the spotlight more than ever.

They ARE doing more focus on seconary characters though, we have like 3 episodes with Thorax as a major character, 1 with Ember, 2 with Zecora and stuff like that. So I guess that's a fairly big shift.

Hard to tell. Starlight's only appeared in four episodes out of 9 so far, and she's only been confirmed three major roles so far this season. Twilight's spoken the most words all season despite four absences in a row (though this could change in A Royal Problem), and she's getting at least two more episodes (Fame, Misfortune and Zeppelin).
